Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

"Excuse me," Pip said, stepping over. "I can't help but notice the look of the completely and utterly lost. Can I help?"

Pip shrugged. "Eh, don't worry about it. Everyone has the same sort of expression on their face when they come. Only I think I was smiling less because I was really tired and cranky." He held out a hand. "Pip Bernadette."

"I'm just so excited to be here. I can't help it," Kaylee said, accepting his hand. "Kaylee Frye. Nice meetin' ya. You sure do have an interestin' accent."

Pip laughed. "Well, Madame Kaylee, that's because I'm French. Where are you from exactly? Another world, another time, maybe?"

"Another time, yes," Kaylee said, her brain still trying to wrap around that concept. "I'm from...somewhere in the 'verse."

She smiled at him, this time, less frighteningly cheerful. "Where are you from?"

"Well, from a small town in France originally, but my family moved around a lot, so I guess I'm kind of from everywhere."

"Oh really?" Pip asked. "Why's that? I was from a psudo-millitary, well, let's be honest. I was from a mercenary family. We went where the money was."

"Still know that feeling." Kaylee couldn't help laughing. "The ship I was on? The people on board...they're like family to me...they usually went where the money was."

She smiled fondly.

Pip grinned. "Yeah. I say family, but the only blood relation was my grandfather. The merc company is my family, really. Soo... from the future. That'd be a spaceship, right?"

"You've lived on a ship? That sounds rather unusual." Cedric sticks his hands in his pockets and says, "England."

"It was very normal to me. I dunno what they will do without me, though. I kept her running," Kaylee said, still proud. "England? What's it like there. I'm not real familiar with this world."

"I loved England," Cedric says simply. "Wasn't planning on leaving until I was transferred from my school. I miss England. So, I suppose England is rather like my Serenity though I don't keep England running."

"A school for the gifted," Cedric lies. "Gifted in academics mostly though there were those gifted in the arts as well."

"And I have absolutely no knowledge of anything mechanical," Cedric laughs. "Where did you pick up such a talent?"
