Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

"Another time, yes," Kaylee said, her brain still trying to wrap around that concept. "I'm from...somewhere in the 'verse."

She smiled at him, this time, less frighteningly cheerful. "Where are you from?"

"Well, from a small town in France originally, but my family moved around a lot, so I guess I'm kind of from everywhere."

"Oh really?" Pip asked. "Why's that? I was from a psudo-millitary, well, let's be honest. I was from a mercenary family. We went where the money was."

"Still know that feeling." Kaylee couldn't help laughing. "The ship I was on? The people on board...they're like family to me...they usually went where the money was."

She smiled fondly.

Pip grinned. "Yeah. I say family, but the only blood relation was my grandfather. The merc company is my family, really. Soo... from the future. That'd be a spaceship, right?"

"Blood isn't so important when it comes to family, Kaylee said, nodding. "And yes. She's the best ship there is."

Pip nodded. "Family is the people you love. Not the people you're related to. Or something wise sounding like that." He shrugged. "So, what did you do on this ship? I can't imagine you being much of a fighter."

"Me? A fighter?" Kaylee was laughing. "No, not so much, you're right. I was the mechanic. I just stick to engines rather than weapons."

Pip grinned. "Oh really? Pretty girl like you is a grease monkey? Well, we've got some interesting pieces of hardware around here. I'm sure you'll be quite entertained."

Kaylee smiled. "I don't mind the grease. All part of the job."

Pip shrugged. "Guess it is. My only claim to fame, mechanically, is the disassembling and rebuilding of a golf cart in the principal's office. Not the current one, mind. One of the old ones."

Pip nodded. "Do they have those in the future? They're like..." He gestured with his hands indicating a golf cart. "That big. Ride around faster than the average person can walk, but not particularly fast."
