Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

Sam seriously hoped Dawn wouldn't mind the uncontrollable grin he was giving Dean. "She's my roommate," he repeated, handing Dean his papers.

"Really?" Dean grinned. He had sorta assumed he'd be rooming with his brother, but really, if the school is giving them pretty girls to room with instead who was he to argue?

"I gotta tell ya, Sammy, looks like you won the roommate lottery." He looked through his own papers and frowned. "What's a Cedric?"

"I assume that's a name," Sam replied. He thought he would be rooming with Dean as well, but really, he wasn't stupid enough to complain about having to stay with Dawn. She didn't appear to be crazy, so far.

"Somehow I don't think it's a name attached to anything as pretty as your roommate," Dean replied glumly, though he rallied to shoot a smile at Dawn.

Dawn smiled at them, blushing a little. She really wasn't used to all the attention. "Thank you. That's very nice of you."

Now probably wasn't the time to tell them that Cedric was Celtic for Chief. Because that would be dorky.

"Probably not as pretty, no," Sam agreed, because he'd be damned if he was letting Dean shower all the attention on Dawn. "But you never know. He could be a really pretty guy. That might be right up your alley." That's what Dean gets for that "little" comment.

"Shut up," Dean told him, reaching up to cuff Sammy -- and being all grumpy again over the fact he had to reach up to do it.

"Yup, definitely an older brother," Dawn decided as she watched them, then said to Sam, "my older sister has to reach up to smack the back of my head, too. She's little, but mighty."

"All. The. Time." Dawn rolled her eyes, sounding very put upon. "Like it's my fault she's a midget? Both our parents were tall. Which kind of gives credence to my 'adopted' theory, not that anyone cares. Er, and I'm babbling. Sorry. Dork equals me."

"You're not babbling," Sam says quickly. "I mean, at least not babbling like a dork. Dean always points out when I do that, so I know what it sounds like."

She grinned at him. So he was nice, too. And out in the sun without igniting. Ooh, jackpot! "My sister's friend is the babbling champion of all time, and I spent a lot of time with her growing up. It must have rubbed off a little."

"Um, so where are you from? What are you doing here?"

Sam kind of wished he'd practiced this spiel before having to try it out on a girl, but it was a little late for that.

"Dean and I are from all over, really. Our dad works a lot of odd jobs, so we move with him from place to place. But he decided that maybe we should stay in one place for the summer, so he sent us here." At least most of that was the truth.

"Oh, cool," Dawn nodded, "my old town fell into a huge sinkhole, so I'm here while my sister and some of her friends figure out where we're going to live."

"A Cedric would be me." He'd been just about to head towards the food table when he'd heard his name called. "You would be Dean?"

"Yeah." Dean turned to look the guy over. Didn't look too bad, though he certainly wasn't a Dawn Summers. And he talked funny. Sammy had all the luck. "Winchester." He held out a hand. "Nice to meet you."

"You as well," Cedric replies, shaking Dean's hand. "You've just arrived, then?"

"Yeah. Dad dropped off my brother Sammy," He nodded to where Sammy and Dawn were still talking a couple feet away, "about half an hour ago. Sounds like you came from a bit further away than Kansas."

"You would be right," Cedric replies. "England."

Looking over to where Dean nodded, Cedric asks, "Your brother is here? You and he didn't want to share a room?"

"We kinda thought we would be." Dean shrugged. "Guess Dad didn't specify when he signed us up. And I don't think Sammy wants to trade his new roommate for me now anyway. That's her there."

"Yes, I can see why your brother would like to keep his roommate." Grinning, Cedric says, "And I imagine you were hoping for something similar?"

Dean grinned wryly. "Well yeah. No offense, Cedric, I'm sure you're a great guy, but..." He gestured toward Dawn, "...dude."

"In this instance, I find myself agreeing with you. I'm not blind," he answers, looking back at Dawn and Sam. "We'll just have to make our room inviting enough that she'll come by...and maybe bring a friend or two."
