Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

[OOC: All right folks, have at it!]

She grinned at him. So he was nice, too. And out in the sun without igniting. Ooh, jackpot! "My sister's friend is the babbling champion of all time, and I spent a lot of time with her growing up. It must have rubbed off a little."

"Um, so where are you from? What are you doing here?"

Sam kind of wished he'd practiced this spiel before having to try it out on a girl, but it was a little late for that.

"Dean and I are from all over, really. Our dad works a lot of odd jobs, so we move with him from place to place. But he decided that maybe we should stay in one place for the summer, so he sent us here." At least most of that was the truth.

"Oh, cool," Dawn nodded, "my old town fell into a huge sinkhole, so I'm here while my sister and some of her friends figure out where we're going to live."

"Oh wow," Sam said quietly, forcing himself not to think of all the phenomena that could cause a town to get swallowed, because really, how weird would that make him look? "Did everyone make it out okay?"

"No," Dawn replied, blinking back tears as she remembered Anya, and Spike, and Amanda, and so many others, "no, not everyone did. But a lot did--there was something in the air that made a lot of people just up and leave town before it happened."

"Well, that's good. And you and your sister both made it out, so that's something. As much as Dean and I rag on each other, I'm kind of glad we're both here for the summer."

"Yeah, it would be great to have some time that was me and her, you know?" Without demons, or vampires, or the world ending. "And you're lucky to be around the same age. Right?"

Sam opened his mouth and wondered if explaining the portal and his previous four year age difference from Dean would be a good idea. Yeah, maybe if he wanted Dawn to run away screaming.

"It works out nicely, I guess. At least we have things in common. Are you and your sister close in age?"

"Five, no, four years older," Dawn said, correcting herself, deciding not to count the year Buffy was dead. Because, wow, that went beyond dork into insane, and that wasn't good.

"Yeah, that can be a pretty big difference. Or so I've heard," he added quickly. "But it could be worse. And I think the age difference gets better as you get older. At least I hope it does."

Dawn grinned. "Well, she let me leave the house on my own and come here, so she's definitely getting less overprotective. That has to be good, right?"

"Yeah, that's great! I'm still surprised my dad left us here. I mean, he's spent a lot of time teaching us to be independent and all, but he's been a little clingy lately. I didn't know if he was going to get over it." Sam smiled. "I'm glad your sister let you come here. 'Cause otherwise I wouldn't have a roommate," he added in what was possibly the most unsuave manner ever.

"Is there a reason he's been clingy?" Dawn smiled and slid a hunk of hair behind her ear. "And you would, it just wouldn't be me."

Sam thought for a second about the best way to phrase things. "Well, yeah. Dean...went missing for a little while," he said, adding quickly: "He doesn't like to talk about it though. My dad's been keeping us close ever since. He sort of blamed himself for the whole thing." Sam was pretty sure his dad had blamed him for losing Dean too, but he didn't like admitting that.

"Oh, that's too bad," she said, thinking of the year Buffy had been...gone, "but it's good that he's let you out of his sight. I mean, what could happen at summer camp, right?"

She groaned. "And I'm sorry, I've just doomed us all. I need a magic phrase eraser."

Sam laughed. "I'll just pretend I didn't hear that, and you can pretend you didn't say it, and then everything will be fine."

"We can hope so, and pray for the best. Sometimes that works."

[identity profile] lilpunkinbelly.livejournal.com 2006-05-10 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Prayer. Right." She'd never tried that before, really. "So, we're really gonna be roommates, huh? I've lived with a bunch of girls, but never a boy. This should be interesting."

And maybe she should have stopped talking five minutes earlier. Dawn mentally facepalmed. Such a geek.

Sam totally didn't notice any geekiness. Because frankly, he was having the same thought.

"I've only ever lived with Dean and my dad, so I'm new at this too. But it can't be that different, right?" He might have sounded a little hopeful at that.

Re: Pick Up Room Assignments

[identity profile] lilpunkinbelly.livejournal.com 2006-05-10 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Dawn nodded. "Right. We'll be fine. No weirdness or anything, I'm sure. You think of me as your brother, and I'll think of you as my sister, and it'll be good."

Wait. No, that wasn't right...
