Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. ~~That's what the mingling section is for!~~

Finding the food but still feeling very out of sorts, Cedric concentrates on running through old quidditch scores in his head. Pass the time, make it go faster and he'd be back at Hogwarts before he knew it.

Right.

Elizabeth grabbed a drink, and smiled at him. "Hi. Welcome to Fandom. I'm Elizabeth Weir," she said, holding out a hand.

"Thank you," Cedric says, shaking her hand. "Cedric Diggory. I'm glad to be here."

Glad wasn't exactly the word but no use for bitterness now.

Elizabeth tilted her head. "English, right?"

"Yes," he replies with a quick nod of his head. "Does it show too badly, then?"

"I've heard worst," Elizabeth said, grinning. "Where exactly in England are you from? I've spent some time there in the past, and really enjoyed myself."

"Before I was transferred, I was going to school there," Cedric answers, careful to keep the name of the school a secret. Just in case. "My father has a high ranking government job," he says, which is almost the truth, "so we've been all over."

Elizabeth laughed. "I know the feeling," she said. "Although we only did the one big move to DC. Um, Washington DC."

"I'm not familiar with that area," Cedric tells her. "In fact, I'm very unfamiliar with all of this."

"Is this your first time in America then?" Elizabeth asked. "You're not the first if it is."

"It is," Cedric confirms. "I guess I'll have a lot of adjusting to do."

"It shouldn't be too bad. As I said, there's a number of people who've already gone through it so I'm sure they'll be willing to help. And we're all pretty friendly, and none of us bite," Elizabeth grins.

Well. Angel bit. Or did bite. But he was leaving, so she didn't think she needed to scare the newbies with that.

"That's good to hear." Cedric runs a hand through his hair, still not too comfortable with the situation. "My previous school was unique. Hopefully, that will help me here."

Elizabeth nodded. "Hopefully, yeah. My previous schools have all been very normal and mundane, so I had no basis from those. Although Fandom's uniqueness?" She tilted her head, thinking. "Mmm, yeah. You'll probably see what I mean after a couple of weeks around here."

"That sounds almost ominous," Cedric says, gripping his broom tighter.

"Wasn't meant to be," Elizabeth said. "I guess more of a warning that things here can be a bit odd at times."

"How odd?" Cedric asks.

"Well, there's the gremlins. They're not quite as big a problem as they used to be, thanks to the extermination. There used to be a squid in the basement, and some people have had problems with some of the ducks in town before," Elizabeth begins.

"Oh." Cedric tries to sound casual, like all that's normal. "That doesn't sound too overwhelming."

"You'll also want to watch out for special odd events," Elizabeth nods. "They tend to happen on weekends. We've had zombies and snow monsters this year. And most of us turned into children a couple of weekends ago too."

Those occurences are a little more unusual. "I'll make sure to keep a sharp eye out. Children?"

"Uh hu," Elizabeth nods, pulling a face. "I was six. It was, uh, odd. Although we didn't think anything of it at the time. As far as we were concerned? We were supposed to be six, or whatever age."

"You...relived your childhoods, in a manner of speaking?"

"Well, yeah in a way," Elizabeth nods. "Only not, because I think for most of us, our actual childhood was at home with family and being here at this boarding school seemed perfectly normal to us."

"What was it like, being that young again?"
