Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

[OOC: All right folks, have at it!]

Zack did what he always did when he was in a social situation, he started up his camera.

So what if the school counselor called it an avoidance technique, at least he wouldn't have to talk to people.

Greg made some terribly attractive faces for the camera.

"And here we have an example of the genus Homo Sapiens Jockius," Zack muttered to himself. "Perhaps later we can see him in his natural inebriated state."

Greg gave a friendly wave, still sticking out his tongue for the camera.

"Note the cheerful, yet vacant, expression," Zack continued his narration. "It is merely a facade until the Jock spots a victim, usually one of superior intellect and inferior physicallity."

[identity profile] like-a-sponge.livejournal.com 2006-05-09 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Greg actually did pull a face of distaste upon picking up that last bit. "Hey. First of all, 'jock' would be kinda generous when talking about yours truly. Secondly, too used to being picked on to select a 'victim,' dude. And third, what's with the assumption of inferior intellect over here? I was making faces, not failing the SATs."

"If you are not in fact about to attempt to put my head down a toilet, I apologise for my error in judgement and mislabeling you," Zack said. "However the statisically likelihood of two people with my IQ, let alone a higher one being in the same room outside of a MENSA conference is small enough to zero to make a reasonable assumption of difference in intellect."

Despite the fact that the last was stated in a blunt matter of fact tone rather than condescendingly, it probably did little to help the situtation.

"Big words do not a smartie make," Greg pointed out. "I just left the sophomore class of San Gabriel High in the wake of a 4.4 GPA, was president of the chess club, and yeah, I ran track. Doesn't change the fact that I'm planning on applying to Stanford next year to major in chemistry."

"No, but an IQ that makes 163 look like a dribbling idiot does," said Zack Addy, stranger to the land of tact. "I've been studying at a university level for eighteen months and if not for the machinations of a vindictive high school math teacher, right now I'd be doing a summer internship in the Jeffersonian's Medico-Legal lab."

Mac was scarily perky this morning, possibly due to the large amounts of caffeine she'd consumed already.

She scanned the large group for new looking people, while she's here she might as well meet some people, and ooh, someone new with technical stuffs. Always a good start.

She wandered over, "Nice camera." Mac pulled a face, how much was that not a good greeting. "Wait, I should probably start with 'Hi, you must be new. I'm Mac'. More traditional."

"Thanks, it was a Christmas pres-" Zack said before realising it was a girl who was speaking to him. Of her own free will. Who wasn't related to him. This was not something he was familar with. "Uh...hi."

"I really should have videoed everything when I first arrived, would have made remembering all the names so much easier." She stopped herself from rambling further when she realised she didn't really know who she was talking to. "So, welcome to Fandom High..." She paused, hoping he would catch the drift and fill in the blank.

[identity profile] twohalvesofaphd.livejournal.com 2006-05-09 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly catching the drift would have required Zack to have the social awareness God gave a cabbage. "I don't actually need the camera to remember, but it's still good scientific practice to have photographic and video references."

Mac smirked, "that's very organised of you." He had obviously completely missed her hint. It might be easier to just be blunt about it. "What's your name?"

Re: Mingle/Meet the Newbies

[identity profile] twohalvesofaphd.livejournal.com 2006-05-09 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Zack pinched himself on the sly, since again, not a familiar situation. "Zack Addy. I'm new, are you?"

Re: Mingle/Meet the Newbies

[identity profile] imac-kenzie.livejournal.com 2006-05-09 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, nope. I'm old...or actually not old, old. I've been here since January though." She grinned at his apparent confusion. "I'm eterally curious, and wanted to meet all the new people," she gestured at him, "like yourself. What brings you here for the summer?"

"A math teacher bearing a grudge," Zack said. "Supposedly the interaction will be good for me."

Elizabeth spotted the camera and ducked.

She still hated being caught on film, damnit.

Re: Mingle/Meet the Newbies

[identity profile] twohalvesofaphd.livejournal.com 2006-05-09 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
So of course Zack tracked the sudden movement with the camera.

The best place to not get caught by a camera? Behind the camera.

So Elizabeth did that, nodding at the boy. "Aspiring film maker?"

"Forensic anthropolgist, and engineer, actually," Zack said, trying not to focus on the fact that people were actually choosing to talk to him. "This is just a hobby."

Re: Mingle/Meet the Newbies

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-05-09 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"Two very differing subject matters there," Elizabeth said, grinning. "You should meet Dr. Jackson. He's an anthropologist, although he's more into the cultural side as far as I'm aware. I'm Elizabeth, by the way. Elizabeth Weir."

Re: Mingle/Meet the Newbies

[identity profile] twohalvesofaphd.livejournal.com 2006-05-09 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"Zack Addy," Zack introduced himself. "Dr Jackson...what journals has he been published in?"

Re: Mingle/Meet the Newbies

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-05-09 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Elizabeth looked up to the sky, as if for divine inspiration. "Uh, I actually have no idea. None of the ones I read, but then again, I don't read anthropology or archaeology journals," she said, grinning slightly. "He might be out later if I have the time, so you could ask him yourself, I guess. If not, Sam or Janet might know." She glanced around at the people. "Janet's the short redhead over there, and Sam's? Well, not here. Tall blonde."

Re: Mingle/Meet the Newbies

[identity profile] twohalvesofaphd.livejournal.com 2006-05-09 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Zack tightened his grip on the camera slightly at the thought of actually initating a conversation with a girl. "I'll have to talk to them later then."
