Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

Gwynn grabbed a cup of something to drink and looked around.

This was worse than facing down Prince John's men. There were so many people here.

What sort of insanity had her father subjected her to?

"Yes, good sir. Indeed I am."

Walter stuck out his right hand. "Walter Dornez and you are?"

Gwynn looked at his hand and then realizes that he was greeting her like her father greeted others. She took his hand and shook it.

"Gwynn Hood," she said.

Walter noted the slight hesitation and filed it away. "A pleasure to meet you, Gwynn. Do you know whom you're rooming with yet? It might be someone I know."

Gwynn looked down at the packet in her hand, dropping the keys they had given her.

"Seras Victoria?"

Walter caught the keys before they hit the ground and held them out for Gwynn. "No, I don't know her. She must be another new student."

Gwynn smiled at him. "Thank you, Sir Dornez. Are there very many new students?"

"Just Walter, please. This isn't a very formal place mostly." Barring the fact that Walter invariably wore waistcoat and tie. "I'm not sure how many new students there are, but it's not a very large school. People tend to come and go quite a bit."

Gwynn nodded.

"It's quite a bit bigger than the monastery, but much smaller than King Phillip's castle," she agreed. "Do many battles occur here?"

"More often than you might expect," Walter said. How to explain snow monsters and robots? "You say monastery and castle. May I ask you a rather odd question?"

"Then why do they take our weapons? How are we to defend ourselves when the battles occur?" Gwynn nodded. "Of course you may."

"I hope not," Gwynn said with a smile. "This place does seem friendly and interesting. It's different than what I'm used to."
