Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

Walter caught the keys before they hit the ground and held them out for Gwynn. "No, I don't know her. She must be another new student."

Gwynn smiled at him. "Thank you, Sir Dornez. Are there very many new students?"

"Just Walter, please. This isn't a very formal place mostly." Barring the fact that Walter invariably wore waistcoat and tie. "I'm not sure how many new students there are, but it's not a very large school. People tend to come and go quite a bit."

Gwynn nodded.

"It's quite a bit bigger than the monastery, but much smaller than King Phillip's castle," she agreed. "Do many battles occur here?"

"More often than you might expect," Walter said. How to explain snow monsters and robots? "You say monastery and castle. May I ask you a rather odd question?"

"Then why do they take our weapons? How are we to defend ourselves when the battles occur?" Gwynn nodded. "Of course you may."

"There's a lot of improvisation that goes on when it comes to fighting."

He cocked his head. From personal experience, this part was weird. "What year is it where you're from?"

If Gwynn hadn't already seen the various dress from people the question would have confused her.

"1199."

Walter's eyebrows shot up.

"I thought I was out of time... Let's put it this way, Gwynn - it's 2006 here, so you're going to have an interesting time of this."

Gwynn's face turned white.

"But how? And how will I be able to write to my father... or Froderick or the King?"

Walter looked at her with concern and pointed to a vacant folding chair. "Do you need to sit down?"

Better she find this out right away, though. "I find that letters go back and forth to my time without any trouble. I'm not as displaced as you are. You won't have to stay out of touch with your family."

Gwynn looks at him in confusion.

"I fear that I am a bit confused here, Walter. It wasn't that long that Robin and Tuck and Scarlett told me where I was going. It has only been two days since I last saw them."

"It's a strange thing about this island. Most people that I've heard of who are like us, out of our times, can go home to them and not have missed more time there than has passed here." He shrugged. "This island is... special."

Special was not the first word that popped into Gwynn's mind about this placed. Bewitched and ensorcelled were actually the first two things she thought of.

"I am pretty sure Robin Hood was not aware of this." she finally said. Something he said caught her attention. "You are out of your time as well?"

"Robin Hood?" Not the Robin Hood, surely. Well, it was Fandom, so she probably did mean that one.

"Um. Yes. I'm from London, 1944."

Gwynn nodded. "Robin Hood, hero of the people, champion of the late King Richard. My father." she sighed. "And in serious need of someone to teach him about being a father."

She cocked her head at him. "London? Then you know where I'm from... sorta.'

"You're from London as well? Or just from the area?" His history was not quite up to snuff on the late 12th century.

"I'm sure things are quite different there in my time, but at least we have an island in common. Two islands if you count this one." Looking around, he spotted Nadia and her plea for help (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/870530.html?thread=40525186#t40525186). "I need to be going, Gwynn. It was a pleasure meeting you. I live in room 303 if you ever need any help."
