The Library

It's Janet's last day opening the library, and she'd truthfully hoped to be a bit better-dressed for it. Sadly, she's down to her last jogging outfit--lavender shorts and a black t-shirt that was a little too short for her to be comfortable in it--and since she's out of clean socks, she's running around the school barefoot. Her sandals have gone missing since last summer, and she's not about to wear her running shoes without socks.

But! The last day of the term was library aide party day, no matter how silly she looks, and so she's hauled a couple of shopping bags filled with gourmet foods--Dr. Pierson was duly harassed for his credit card as forfeit for abandoning them to teach history, and also, Professor Wagner was just too nice for that kind of harassment--so she unlocked the door, flipped on the lights, and set out a bunch of ~~mod your own yummies~~ food and drinks behind the Collections Desk. Technically, it was just for the library aides, but they were all nice women. ~~Hush, you.~~ So roomies and friends and could probably be persuaded to share.

Random passers-by might even have luck too. As long as none of them had any overdue library books. Or were willing to accept a malleting and returned their book first.

"The clothes have been released?" Elizabeth asked, looking down at her own outfit. "Oh thank goodness for that."

"It was in the announcements," said Janet, glancing at Liz's outfit. "I don't know, I like what you're wearing."

"I keep ending up being in the shower when announcements come," Elizabeth shrugged. "My legs are too pale," she said, looking down at them. "And I have to say, you wear what you've got on well."

"There's nothing wrong with being pale. It's healthier." Janet grinned and nibbled on a piece of chocolate. "It's a little bit less than what I'm used to."

"I like catching the sun though," Elizabeth replied, also grinning. "I could get used to you wearing that much. Quite easily."

"So wear sunscreen," said Janet. She stuck her tongue out at Liz. "I think you could get used to me in this sort of thing, but I doubt you'll get the chance to. Unless we started jogging together."

"I do," Elizabeth assured her, sticking her tongue out in response. "I'll jog with you, sure. Especially if you're wearing something like that. Or as it's the summer, we could start swimming perhaps?"

"I usually wear something like this for jogging, yes," said Janet dryly. "I haven't been swimming in ages. I don't care if the squid has moved out of the pool; I'm never going in there in case it moves back in."

"Wow. If I wasn't a runner already, that would be enough to inspire me to take up the sport," Elizabeth nodded seriously. "I wasn't suggesting the pool. We're an island. There's a rather large body of water surrounding us. It's summer and warm."

"Glad to know I can be so inspiring," said Janet. Nope, no blushing here. None. "I was assuming you'd be smart enough not to want to go in the pool, silly."

"Oh, that you most certainly are," Elizabeth winked, leaning against the collections desk. "I'm staying clear of the pool. Which is a pity, because I like swimming. I'm just going to have to make the most of the ocean this summer."

"Really? Do tell." Janet tried not to stare. But it was an especially pretty dress. "Swimming in the ocean can be a lot more fun. And there's always sunbathing after. With sunscreen."

"What exactly would you like to know," Elizabeth asked, fiddling with her necklace. "Ooh, yes. Although I find it very difficult to make sure I'm adequately covered by myself."

"How I could possibly be an inspiration." Janet smiled, still trying not to stare. "Nice necklace. I think I could probably help you with sunscreen. If you wanted."

"Well, you're certainly a stimulating influence on my emotions," Elizabeth said softly. "Thanks. I don't tend to wear it that often. The turquiose is a bit chunky." She bit her lip slightly. "I could never turn you down. Your offer of help, I mean."

"I certainly like that. It's a good thing, right?" Okay, now Janet really was looking at the necklace. "It's pretty, though." Maybe she wasn't just talking about the necklace, though. She blushed faintly. "Oh. Well. That's nice to hear."

"It's a very good thing," Elizabeth said, smiling at Janet. "Mmm, yeah. Maybe I'll wear it more often." She reached across the collection desk to grab Janet's hand and squeezed it lightly.

"I think so too." Janet leaned her elbow on the table and propped her chin in one hand. "That'd be nice." She smiled even more widely as Liz took her hand.

Elizabeth glanced behind her at the apparently empty library, before leaning even further across the desk to quickly kiss Janet. She just grinned.

Janet bit her lip and then shook her head at Liz. "So what am I supposed to do from now until the end of the day?" she asked.

Elizabeth looked around again. "Read?" she suggested innocently.

Janet rolled her eyes. "Like I haven't been doing that all morning? That and snacking. I don't think I've gotten a single productive thing done all day."

"Who needs to do anything productive? It's the end of the semester!"

"I'm theoretically working," said Janet. "But the difference between theory and practice is pretty big today."

Elizabeth nodded, grinning. "Yeah, I'm noticing that," she said teasingly.
