Advanced Criminal Justice, Class 29, Period 1, 04.25.06

"Hello, students! Remember, next Tuesday is your final. Since it's been such a persistent metaphor this semester, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a question about the Tricycle of Justice."

"Thursday will be a review day. Bring any question you have about Justice and I'll answer it! But for today, you get off easy. Today we'll be watching one last episode off Crime & Punishment for the semester. This is the controversial episode where a party clown was found dead in the Mayor's kitchen pantry."

"This week's metaphor is the sun, while this week's extra credit is to bring is some snazzy, summery sunglasses."

Sam stole some of Parker's popcorn. "Okay, I didn't think cops could do that."

"I'm not sure they legally can, but it doesn't look like the suspect knows that. Get a lawyer!" Parker ate a handful of popcorn instead of throwing it, then shook her head. "It's not enough to be Mirandized, you have to believe it!"

"Or at least pay attention to what they're saying. It's more than just a cool recitation for television. There's real rights in there, somewhere." She paused and munched some popcorn. "Or, at least, there used to be."

"I'm not going to apply to law school," Parker chanted under her breath. "I will not look into how the pre-law program at Harvard it set up. I will not become a D.A. I have a plan, and I'm sticking to the plan...."

"Yeah, I had a plan, too," Sam muttered, "and you saw how that's turned out."

Parker threw a couple kernels of popcorn at her, then at the screen. "Yours included a guy. This is a plan whether or not I have a particular guy. Although the guy I have right now would probably like the law school plan better." Parker scowled. "And therefore, I shall not do it."

"Okay, one, I didn't make a plan based on a guy. He just, er, gave me the idea." Sam said, "But if you're not going to do something because of a guy, isn't that the same thing as doing something because of him?"

Parker through more popcorn at her. "Oh, sure. You and your logic, Carter. I end up screwed either way. Pfftt." She glowered. "I bet I could do this better than RedHeaded D.A. of Doom."

"You definitely could. Although I don't see you making a lot of deals."

"Deals are for the weak. And for the weak of evidence." Parker shook her head. "One of the advantages I can see, of having me in that job? I won't be tempted to take bribes. And I'd want to do my job perfectly." She paused. "If I took it, I mean." She turned to Sam, and frowned. "Your plan hasn't changed beyond the no-Jack part, has it?"

Sam thought of Eighth, now gone, but still a threat. "Maybe how I get there, but the ultimate goal? No."

"Hunh." Parker thought about that, then nodded. "Yeah, same here. I still think the first plan might work better, but--" She cocked her head at the TV, then ate some more popcorn. "Maybe a back-up plan is a good idea."

"Back up of any kind is always a good idea," Sam agreed.

"So what's your new back-up plan?"

"I'm still working on it," she frowned. "Maybe...MIT."

"Heh. Okay. You realize, your back-up plan is MIT, and my back-up plan is Columbia Law? What kind of lives are we living that these are our back-up plans?"

"High pressure ones?"

"....yeah, I'm thinking that plan to go to my condo in Aruba with you guys for a week or two is looking better and better."

"There's a plan to go to your condo in Aruba?" Sam brightened, "How do I not know about that?"

Parker frowned, then nodded. "Because it keeps being discussed in the library, off and on and not seriously. But my dad is in Malaysia until the end of the month, so hey. Easy plan!"

"I need a bathing suit and SPF 50 sunscreen," Sam said, sticking her arm out in front of her. It didn't phosphoresce under the classroom lights, but it was close. "You wouldn't believe how badly I burn."

"You and Rory both, I think. So noted. We'll take a portable pavilion and a stockpile of sunscreen just for you two." Parker grimaced. "I have a tendency to freckle. Ugh."

"I bet the freckles are cute." Sam scooted her chair about an inch away from Parker.

Parker aimed a *thwap!* at Sam, and rolled her eyes.

"They are not cute. They're annoying! I don't burn, at least, but seriously. I am not Hayseed Holly. Therefore, sunscreen and cover-ups are my friend too." She shook her head. "We'll see what my dad says, though. He might want to use the place in Aruba for some corporate thing for most of the summer."

Sam made a face at Parker. "Whatever works."
