"Not something you want to put on the application to Harvard?" Parker speared another bite of salad. "Or are you just hoping to see the look on Aeryn's face if she wins?"

"The look on Aeryn's face, and I don't want to have that much focus on me," Rory replied.

"Heh. God, mental note, take camera phone to Prom, just to catch some of the silliness that's sure to happen. Plus, Angel in a tiara." Parker grinned. "Which *will* happen, even if I have to talk another Prom Royalty winner into loaning it to me for five minutes." She sighed. "Also, I have to ask Anakin if he can mess with a couple DVD players and get them to do the same trick he made his television set do. I'm thinking that holographic projections of a exotic birds and animals would be kind of cool, at least immediately outside the City Hall."

"You'd better ask him soon - we're leaving for Connecticut tomorrow," Rory said, raising a brow. "And then we're getting back just in time to get pretty for the dance."

Parker popped open her phone, and left Anakin a message (http://emo-padawan.livejournal.com/4085.html?thread=671989#t671989), then grinned at Rory. "Think he'll want to do it?"

"The boy loves to tinker," Rory said, shrugging. "So he'll want to, sure. Question is whether he'll have time."

"If he can even get one or two done, it'll be cool. I want sphinxes prowling around the entrance."

Rory shrugged again. "He spent an hour on my car on Tuesday? And now it hovers and goes way faster."

"... yeah, so this'll be something he can do tomorrow on his lunch hour," Parker said wryly. "Hovers?"

"I haven't tested it out," Rory confessed. "But he says it does."

"You know, if he ever did decide to quit the Jedi? He'd have a terrific career in engineering and aeronautics ahead of him."

For a second, Rory's face flickered with a trace of selfish hope.

And then it was gone again. "Yeah, but the whole thing is part of the Jedi thing, anyway."

"He knows how to fix engines and DVD players because of the Force?" Parker gave Rory a look. "Seriously?"

"It's the attunement thing," Rory said. "He's good at it because he can feel how things work, if that makes sense."

"Hunh." Parker refrained from asking 'dirty?' because seriously, she didn't want to know. "So if he quit being a Jedi, he'd have to give that up? That seems unfair." Parker paused, and backtracked another part of the conversation. "You guys are going to Conneticutt this weekend? Any particular reason?"

"His journalism project," Rory said, leaving behind questions of the Force since she barely understood it. "He's interviewing me. We're meeting up with Paris tomorrow afternoon and then seeing my grandparents, which will be hell, and then we're staying at my house. Should be fun, once we get away from Emily and Richard."

Cocking her head, Parker said, "Why would that be hell? How difficult are your grandparents, anyway? And did you ever explain anything about Anakin to Paris? Last I heard, she thought you were dating an older teacher."

"I told her the truth," Rory said, glancing around and lowering her voice. "Okay. Have I ever shown you a picture of Dean, my ex? Dean, who is tall and lanky and good-looking and who my mother adored? Grandma hated him. Imagine how this will go."

Parker opened her mouth, then shut it with a click. "Oh. Dear." She frowned, drawing her eyebrows together. "What kind of guy does your grandmother want you to hang out with? Because Dean sounded nice, and if she didn't approve of him, I can't imagine what she's looking for."

"Do you remember Logan Huntzberger?" Rory asked.

Parker thought. And thought. And thought.

"Not even a little. Wait. Logan-who-is-not-a-bunny?"

"Logan who I accidentally kissed that one time and pissed off Logan-who-used-t'be-a-bunny," Rory said.

"And who shall probably be a bunny again, given his track record." Parker tilted her head. "I don't get it. He was kinda just there. What appealed to your grandmother? That he was blond?"

"Old money," Rory said, rubbing her fingers together in the universal symbol of wealth.

Parker blinked, then blinked again, then said, "Is your mom adopted?"
