Advanced Criminal Justice, Class 28, Period 1, 04.20.06

[OOC: Continuing "Raid Wiki For Info" Week! Also, I've finally updated the Class Info Post.]

"Hello, students! Today we're discussing two opposing models of Justice. But first, a reminder: there's only a week of classes left!"

"Okay, the two models are the Conflict Model and the Consensus Model. The Conflict Model states that the organizations in the Justice System should - and perhaps do! - come into contention with each other. For example, police are determined to put people in prison and even have clearance rates. Similar stories with the prosecutors. But prison officials may be concerned wiith overcrowding and do what they can to limit their numbers. Perhaps they even let criminals out more easily."

"Another example would be the way that police can be so determined to arrest superheroes sometimes. Or the courts with their fines for public destruction. It's all conflict. Competition, even, to see which wheel on the Tricycle of Justice is the best."

"On the other end of the theoretical teeter totter is the Consensus Model. It says that the Justice System should - and perhaps does! - work together and cooperate. The police and courts work together to send bad people to prison. The prisons hold the bad people. Superheroes assist where they can. The important thing is that, egads, we're on a tricycle and we're having fun! Look at us zoom down this hill! Wheee!"

"Some people have speculated that we shoot for Consensus but Conflict is our reality. My question for you is what do you think about the whole thing? Consensus? Conflict? Are we one? Are we the other? Is one better? What are we doing with our shiny, red tricycle?"

"Please discuss!"

Angel thought about it.

"Isn't the front wheel of a tricycle bigger than the other two?"

Callisto had no idea what a tricycle was so she just looked vaguely confused.

She also totally wasn't keeping an eye out for Logan for any reason whatsoever.

"I think that sometimes the cops are in too much of a hurry to arrest someone and get them in jail in high profile crimes," Veronica said, thinking about her own personal experiences in Neptune. "And then, once they have what they think is their man, they make any other evidence they find fit that theory, instead of letting the evidence tell the truth."

Marty tapped his pencil trying to think up an answer. "I'd have to agree that we try for the Consensus model, but end up having the conflict. So in this particular case? Our tricycle wheels are horribly out of alignment and is extremely wobbly and hard to steer."

Last night Jaye got to report to everyone that both exes are going to prom with friends of hers, yet she is still dateless. And they're allllllll in this class right now.

Jaye would be in a pissy mood.

"I think I agree that we'd like the reality to be a consensus model, but that isn't always possibly so we end up with conflict." Cameron replied.

"I like tricycles," said Janet. "Especially when everyone works together to make sure the tricycle operates smoothly. So, cooperative." Janet took a drink of her coffee. A very large drink. Because really, she theoretically needed to be awake to come to class. "Can I have a shiny green tricycle instead?" The red would clash with her hair.

No one is allowed to snicker or they die, just a warning.

"What's a tricycle?" Aeryn asks, because she's missing a piece of information for the metaphor.

"Does it have to be a tricycle?" asked Archie. "Why can't it be a carriage?

Parker frowned. "So, does the Public Defender's office come in as part of the court system? Or are they they an entirely separate toy? Maybe a Big Wheel?" She yawned, and glared at her coffee. "Sorry. But if we're talking conflict and cooperation, they're an anomaly. They're supposed to defend those without any other representation, after all."

Anakin frowned. "I guess that in the Republic our three wheels of Justice would be the courts, the local law enforcement, and the Jedi. Depending on the planet or the issue, the, um, tricycle is either moving fine or limping along with only one and a half wheel--the Jedi serving as a balance to corruption in some of the Outer Rim worlds where the local law enforcement isn't concerned with justice and the Republic courts aren't concerned with the Outer Rim."

He ran a hand through his hair. "I think the Jedi serve as the big front wheel in Republic justice--I don't see how it would work if we weren't there."

"Balance is important," Bridge says. "And three's a good number for balance. It's really hard to tip a tricycle over, after all."

If Sam was more awake, she'd be giggling every time she looked at Professor Tick. All things considered, it's probably better that she's not more awake.

"I think we aspire to the Consesus model, but human nature being what it is, we're doomed to Conflict."

Metaphor

Justice is a window letting the sunshine of right into the cold dark room of Society.

EC

When I figure it out, I'll let you know.

Metaphor:

Justice is like a window. Once it is shattered by the rogue baseball of villainy all hell and chaos will break loose. Anarchy will reign supreme. Lakes will turn into lemonade. Dog and cats will play poker together in the same velvet paintings. Elvis will come back to life and wear even more sequins in his Vegas comeback show. Most importantly? I'll actually agree that it is "Chung-Chung" not "Doink-Doink".

Metaphor

The window of Justice can be many things; It can be open or closed, it can be clean or dirty, and sometimes it can give someone who tries to circumvent it a concussion.

EC

I think I'm sticking around here for the summer and then heading off to college in the fall.

[identity profile] emo-padawan.livejournal.com 2006-04-20 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Metaphor

Justice is a window that allows Society to sit in its living quarters and enjoy the appearance of Order without having to necessarily smell the Smog of Corruption or hear the Annoying Beeping Horns of Politics. Jedi must occasionally jump through that window and plummet down several stories, whee! in order to make sure that Society's view isn't disturbed.

EC

I'm trying to get the Council to let me stay the summer, but after that it's back to work with Master Kenobi.

The Justice System fits together to create the stained glass window of Justice.
