The park was space themed today (thanks for the help, squirrels). For a given and confusing value of “space themed.” There was a space-themed inflatable obstacle course. There were star and planet decorations hung up everywhere (who had hung them up? Possibly squirrels). There were little toy spaceships. There was a large inflatable pool full of very dark and glittery jello.

The only thing missing today was Anakin. In his place was Stark, looking a bit lost even though he’d somehow planned all of this. Actually, the megaphone was missing as well. Stark was just going to yell instead.

“Anakin isn’t here but he wanted me to do this. I don’t know why. I don’t know why he does anything.” Did anyone truly understand Anakin’s motivations?

“We have 4 different activities today. An obstacle course. Stomp rockets. Planetary rings. And…jello.” Everyone, be sure to thank Summer for activity number 4!

“Listen for your names, collect your shirts, and…enjoy? Oh. And no powers.” That was cheating!

Luckily for everyone including themselves and their continued efforts at denial.

Steph grinned a little bit, because hearing that kind of felt nice, but she tried to give Vi a light nudge with her shoulder. "Please tell me I'm not actually the only person you trust."

Sorry, Isabela.

"I mean back home there's Powder," Vi replied after possibly a moment or two longer than Steph would've liked. "And Ekko, and I guess Libs and Illyana here, but you, you're the one I trust the most. It's...hard."

Isabela would just have to find different creative inspiration that didn't involve jello.

"I know," Steph said softly. "That's mutual, for what it's worth."

She wasn't as reluctant to trust as Vi was, but there were still very few people she was willing to really let past her defenses.

Isabela would. Oh, Isabela would.

Vi beamed at her. "It's worth a lot," she said, just as softly.

Honestly all Steph and Vi had to do was exist in each other's presence and it would probably give Isabela fodder for her imagination.

There were a few things that it crossed her mind to do right now, but in the end the one she settled for was reaching out to just touch Vi's cheek lightly, smiling up at her.

"What else are best friends for?"

And they were doing something slightly more than existing right now.

Vi grinned, well, kept grinning at her. "I think you said something about ego and giving each other shit," she said, because otherwise she was going to do something dumb like kiss Steph's palm.

As opposed to the 'do something dumb and actually try to pull Vi into a kiss' idea that had crossed Steph's mind for a fleeting second?

Instead what Steph chose to do with her mouth was to open it and say, "That part's a given."

Not that, you know, she'd remembered to move her hand away or anything.

It was great that they could reign in their dumb impulses like that, wasn't it?

Vi reached up to curl her fingers around Steph's. "And you're very giving."

Vi, what even did you mean by that?

Their self-restraint was so impressive, really. Just ignore all the internal screaming.

"Not to just anybody, I'm not," replied Steph, who couldn't say exactly what she thought Vi had meant by that, but was sure it made total sense. Somehow.

Hopefully Vi wouldn't mind Steph running her thumb over the skin just below her eye.

Just ignore Isabela and a passel of squirrels hanging on your every word, you two.

Vi didn't mind at all. Though her mouth was a lot drier than it'd been until a few moments ago. "Guess I'm pretty lucky then."

Who? Were there supposed to be other people here? Because Steph hadn't noticed.

"Yeah? How lucky do you feel?" she asked in a voice gone a little more husky than usual, unconsciously licking her lips because it seemed her mouth was kind of dry too. How strange, that.

Maybe it didn't entirely make sense, but she'd veered off mid-sentence from asking 'how lucky do you want to get,' so...

"Very," was the answer to both the question Steph had actually asked and the one she'd started to.

Her eyes followed the moment of Steph's tongue, then with a supreme effort of willpower, turned her head to the side. "Hey, did you hear that?"

Steph blinked a couple of times, snapping herself out of that mood with a mixture of disappointment and relief.

She turned her head too, following Vi's gaze. "Hear what?"

Vi shoved her own disappointment down. Steph didn't want this, she just got carried away.

"I thought I heard something," she lied, though she could now hear what sounded like vaguely frustrated chittering.

You'd think they might have picked a better place for this than the middle of the park on a Wednesday with a bunch of other people around, but no.

"Well... what did you think you heard?" As much as she was (she was pretty sure) relieved that she'd been interrupted before doing something she'd probably regret, it was the disappointment that came through in Steph's voice more than anything. She hadn't yet made an effort to pull her hand back, although now she was starting to.

That just gave them extra motivation not to follow through.

"I'm not sure," Vi said, letting her pull her hand away even though she wanted nothing more than to grab it again. "Maybe everything's about to start."

You probably let things get weird, Gingrich. Good job.

"Guess we're rivals again, huh?" Steph asked, very slowly relaxing the arm around Vi's waist as if she had to peel herself away. "And we don't even get to go head to head."

Which was... not the kind of head to head she would like to be going with Vi, but anyway.

Vi reluctantly slid her arm off Steph's shoulder. "Just means I can cheer you on without feeling guilty." Team loyalty? Pfft.

"Convenient," Steph said, crossing her arms over her chest just to have something to do with them now. "That means I can do the same thing."

They had plenty of team loyalty! To team them.

Well, team them was pretty awesome. Never mind how badly Vi was about to do on something she should've aced.

"You'd better, 'cause I'm up first."

And team them still had so much more potential to live up to.

"You know I'll be watching," Steph told her.
