Summer Shenanigans, Wednesday, June 22, 2022

Today was hot and humid, which meant that it was the perfect temperature for all of the water balloon-themed games Anakin had set out in the park today.

(Most of them were filled with water and that's all that matters, right?)

"As usual, you will be working in teams," Anakin shouted through his megaphone. "There are various stations for you to attempt! The most accurate team wins!"

Did anyone even care about winning these days?

"Listen for your names!"

Steph was amused enough by her team's shirts, and maybe scheming to steal one of the adorable pufferfish ones, but oof, team 3's shirt. Oof. She was too busy feeling sorry for Vi and Stark and Annie and their teammates to put too much thought into a pufferfish t-shirt heist, luckily for team 4.

Careful, Steph, or you might be subjected to a sad puppy eye.

And a resigned little shrug. There was definitely that.

"He does this on purpose."

"I mean, I guess you could consider him as the game master of this whole operation," mused Steph, "in which case it totally makes sense. Some of us like to try and bait our players into a TPK as often as possible. Others?"

She gestured at the whole setup.

"Still devious, totally valid."

"TPK?" Stark echoed. "And how does anything he does make sense?"

Like the shirt Stark was vaguely gesturing to and then immediately regretting doing so.

"Total Party Kill," Steph clarified. "Like, lulling the players into a false sense of security by throwing a bunch of encounters at them that they can just breeze through and think they're total badasses, then give them a tough fight they'll underestimate and let it wipe them out."

She was grinning a little bit, which should worry Stark if he were ever considering joining a game she ran.

"Okay, no, I don't actually like to deliberately try and kill off my players' characters but it is fun to really challenge them," she amended. "I think he just likes to do that in really fucking weird ways."

"He is really frelling weird..."

And one of Stark's favorite people on the island though that could never be admitted in public.

"I think he just enjoys making us all look foolish."

"That is literally the only conclusion I can draw from the absurdity levels of this whole thing," Steph replied. "Again, I can kind of see the appeal."

"I suppose it's good that someone else can," Stark said, shaking his head a little.

"I hope there's paintball again. He needs to be shot some more."

Steph laughed. "Is that just a pastime of yours or something?"

"I love shooting Anakin," Stark said simply. "I don't love being shot by Anakin."

"That's--" Steph thought about it for a second. "That's fair enough, I guess. So in your opinion, is having to wear that shirt better or worse than the greased pig thing?"

It seemed kind of like a tossup to her.

"The shirt can come off easily enough. The pig grease was...stubborn."

His mask had been so shiny though!

But at least the raccoons hadn't tried to kidnap him again because of it?

"Yeah, the grease was... not easy to forget."

Speaking of the devil. "Does this shirt mean what I think it means?"

The apologetic grimace on Steph's face could be answer enough all on its own.

"Yeah, it's... it's kinda gross and I think you should really relish tearing the sleeves off this one. And then maybe tearing the rest of it up afterward?"

Steph looked grossed out enough that Vi kept any comments about rough handling and bursting to herself.

"Did you want to help with that last part?" Vi offered, already pulling off the sleeves.

Well, that was good. Not that Steph had had any thoughts along those lines herself. Nope.

"I mean, I was kind of exaggerating about that part, but... sure, if you want me to," she replied.

None at all. Vi was sure.

"I figure it'll probably be more fun than the rest of the day." And the closest Vi'd ever get to Steph tearing her clothes off. Not that she wanted that.

Of course not, and neither did Steph! She wasn't about to change the subject just to distract herself from that line of thought or anything, either.

"We could have a game session tonight, if you want?" she offered. "After dealing with the shirt."

Honestly, since neither of them were thinking about it, the subject barely even needed to be changed. "Yeah, I'd like that."

It might not need to be changed, but Steph was changing it anyway out of... courtesy. Yeah. Sure, that was it.

"Cool. I'll order dinner if you bring dessert?"

It was why they were friends, the courtesy.

Vi grinned at her. "Sounds great." And not at all like a date.

Because that was a defining trait for both of them. Courteousness.

"So all we have to do is survive all this water balloon business first," Steph said with an eager smile, "and then we're good."

Okay, so there would have to be some cleanup first, because Steph at least was going to come out of this pretty liberally splattered with chocolate pudding, but still.

It was the first thing people thought of when you asked about them.

"Hey, no problem." Which would be true in Vi's case. Almost everyone else on her team, not so much.

Their finest quality, even!

"Guess we're back to competing this week, huh?" It had been nice being on the same team last week, even if it had been more distracting for some weird, unknown reason.
