Good morning, everyone! It's time for another summer of Anakin Skywalker Thinks This Teaches Team Building and Also Amuses Himself (Mostly the Second Thing) but "Shenanigans" Is Easier!

The bleachers for viewing were set up in the park backed up to the pond and near the Belthazor Commemorative Divot. Food vendors, remembering how this worked, had arrived with hot dog, popcorn, and rum for the squirrels. And coffee. Just...so much coffee. Huge flatscreens were set up facing the bleachers, which gave people a hint that today's event would not just stay inside the park, and the cameras were trained at...well, ankle height or the sky for now because squirrels and rum.

Anakin and his bullhorn were standing behind a folding table stacked high with brightly patterned shirts and people who had been here before knew that just because the shirts were free, it never, ever meant you wanted to wear them.

"GOOD MORNING!" he boomed through the bullhorn when enough people were gathered. "Welcome to another summer of team building activities!"

He might be waiting for a while if he was expecting cheers, just saying.

"Today, as has become tradition, we shall conduct a relay race around the island to acquaint you newcomers with where things are!" he said. "Please listen as your name is called and then come up for your festive t-shirts. We shall have four teams of eight."

The first two teammates (Tony & Irene, Watts & Jaskier, Steve M. & Sakaki, and Goose & Isabela) will three-legged race from the edge of the park up alllllll of those stairs on Apocalypse Avenue and stop at Surf's Up, where they will get a bellyboard and a shark hat to pass along to the teammate waiting there. Then they get shark hats to wear for themselves, because everyone looks better in these hats.

(What, not like it's gonna clash with the shirts.)

If you thought a little sleep deprivation would slow McGarrett down, you were sadly mistaken.

"All right, team!" he said, clapping his hands together once. "This'll be great. Have you three-legged raced before?"

Sakaki sniffed a little, wiping back the tears from when she got her shirt, and nodded in the affirmative.

And then started to get wibbly again, not because of the cuteness of the shirt this time, but because the way the hat looked like it was eating people made her think about people eating taco cats.

But at least Mr. McGarrett was tall so she wouldn't feel like she was dragging some wee tiny classmate up and down the stairs like she always felt during track day back at her old school.

Would Steve feel bad about semi-dragging a sobbing teenager around? Yeah, a little.

"Okay, deep breaths," he said, kneeling down to tie their inside legs together. "We've got this. The other teams aren't as good."

"This could be worse," Tony said, considering the parameters and what had happened last summer during thiz.

"On the stairs, Tony," Irene pointed out, sidling up so they could join up their legs. This seemed wildly unfair. Three-legged races were difficult enough -- please, as though Irene had debased herself by participating in one since she was a girl -- but the damned stairs were a step (har har) too far. "I promise to try not to trip us both."

"It doesn't involve unknown fluids. Unlike some of these games." Tony was still shuddering over that.

"And don't worry, I'm certain, between the two of use, we'll manage some grace on the stairs," he offered with a quick, if tired, smile.

"I like your optimism," Irene decided with a rueful little snort. "Do we get anything if we win this, anyway? Bragging rights? Masks to filter the air when we burn these hideous shirts?"

They looked and felt like they might well just turn into napalm with enough heat.

"Bragging rights, mostly," Tony admitted. "And a sense of superiority."

"Any bonus points if we come by that naturally?" Irene asked, reaching up to steady a hand on Tony's shoulder as soon as they were tied together. "Perfect day for it, too. I'm sure I didn't sleep a wink last night."

"You know, I had the same problem." He assumed it was just his normal level of work driven insomnia.

Irene shot a worried glance up at him, which caused a little stumbling so this was already going great. "Well, that's not good. Hopefully it's not an island thing."

Silly Irene. It was always an island thing.

"Better not be," Tony grumbled, trying to keep them steady by matching her as best he could. It was like dancing, in a way! "I'd just like a nice, quiet week."

Aaaaand he jinxed them all.

Isabela looked at Goose. "Well, I certainly won't mind being tied to you."

Sorry, Goose.

You would think by now that Goose would be used to that kind of reaction but he still went a little pink.

“Well I hope I don’t disappoint then,” he managed at last with a grin.

"Don't worry, sweet thing, I'm sure you'll be more than satisfactory."

Was Isabela going to be the entire reason they came second-last on this leg? Probably!
