Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

It was unseasonably warm in Fandom today, which was good news for anyone who didn't want to have to worry about bundling up, and bad news for anyone hoping for a snowy picnic. Traditions were traditions though, so there was still a bonfire going and plenty of supplies for s'mores and hot chocolate among the variety of foods and drinks that had been prepared for the new folks.

Once everything was set up and un-tasteful amounts of glitter had been brushed off of everything, it was time to be welcoming!

Hannibal caught sight of the young blue boy, watched him for a minute, raised an eyebrow in interest, and came over.

"Excuse me. Are you Kurt Wagner, by any chance?"

Ok now that wasn't something he had been expecting. He looked at the man for a moment before giving a slight nod. "Yes, I'm Kurt Wagner. Do... do I know you?" He wasn't trying to be rude, it was just a bit of a shock that someone here would know him or almost recognize him.

Hannibal chuckled. "Likely not, but I do know you. Or at least, another version of you. I have taught at Xavier's when you were also a teacher."

Ah. The alternate timelines bit. Kurt had actually been starting to wonder if Scott was just pulling his leg with that and the Professor had said he would learn more when he was at the right time and place. Looked like Fandom was the place and now was the time.

But even beyond knowing that the whole timelines thing was real, there was something the man had said that stuck out.

"You... you said I was a teacher? At the school?" Forgive the boy for gawking a little at that since he had always assumed he'd be struggling to get anywhere or do anything really - things being as they were for him lately and all.

"A teacher and one of the X-Men," Hannibal agreed, nodding. "I've no idea if it was you only older, or a different universe entirely, of course. But you must admit, you are fairly distinctive."

"But still! If there's a chance I.. any version of me, could pull that off! That's really cool!" Kurt said excitedly as he broke into an huge toothy honest grin.

Hannibal's amused smile was smaller and less toothy. "Of course you could. Why would you think otherwise?"

"Ah it's been... difficult lately. I ended up with the Professor because of some trouble I had gotten into" Kurt dropped his gaze for a moment as he continued.

"And things weren't all that good at my last school. Just feels like fate has it against me, no matter what I try to do."

"Don't confuse fate with small-minded people," Hannibal said. "They are unfortunately ubiquitous, but not inevitable."

Kurt nodded slowly, mulling over that for a moment.

"All I know is I want to make something of myself. But it's hard when you stand out like this" he said with a slight frown and a wave at himself. "I tried hiding who I was at my last school. And that worked fine... until it didn't. The Professor said I have to embrace who I am. Not sure I know how to do that just yet."

Hannibal smiled. "Fandom is very good for those that stand out. I won't promise that nobody will be taken aback by your appearance, but for the most part, you won't find it a problem. My husband graduated here and was the prom king."

He pulled out his phone and flipped to the photos to find one, then held it out to Kurt. It was a picture of a brown-haired man scowling at the camera - but from below his nose, his face and most of his chest were missing, replaced by fire. "He was an X-Man, too."

Kurt's eyes went a little wide looking at the picture. "He was an X-Men too? That is so cool." He considered the picture a moment then back to Hannibal. "What was... I mean... can I ask what his name was"?

"Jonothon Starsmore. He went by Chamber," Hannibal said. "If you don't recognize him, it's possible he may not exist in your world. Or he could not have developed his powers yet; he was quite a bit younger than you."

He chuckled. "The different worlds can be quite confusing at first."

"Don't know any Jonothon" Kurt said after a moment thought. "I really like his code name. Chamber is a really cool name. I go by Nightcrawler, with the team at least" Kurt said with a smile then suddenly realized that would have been obvious with current company. "But you probably knew that" he added with a slightly sheepish grin.

"And yes it is a little confusing with the... " he made a face as he tried to think of the right word. "The.. shenanigans?" He gave a slight sigh at how much he still struggled with certain words because of his accent.

"The Kurt I knew did, but there is never any telling what differences there might be between worlds," Hannibal said.

"I would simply say the differences, as shenanigans implies something more intentional," Hannibal said. "But if you have difficulties, I speak German as well," he offered in that language.

Kurt broke into a grin and nodded. "Danke sehr!" he said enthusiastically.

"Bitte," Hannibal answered. "If you enjoy food, I'm teaching a class on Mondays in the community center. You'd be welcome to join."

"Oh I actually think I have that that class. It was one I asked the Professor to sign me up for!" Kurt was suddenly even more excited for classes to start now.

Hannibal laughed. "Never underestimate the power of food to a teenager. I hope you will enjoy it."

"I look forward to it, Mr.... ?" Kurt trailed off, suddenly realizing he had not asked the man his name yet as he gave him a somewhat apologetic smile.

"Ah, I'm terribly sorry; how rude of me." Hannibal held out his hand. "Dr. Hannibal Lecter."

"Dr. Lecter," he said with a nod as he retuned the gesture with a firm handshake. "I look forward to your class tomorrow!"

He was honestly excited about all the classes, but even more so for that one class now.
