Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

It was unseasonably warm in Fandom today, which was good news for anyone who didn't want to have to worry about bundling up, and bad news for anyone hoping for a snowy picnic. Traditions were traditions though, so there was still a bonfire going and plenty of supplies for s'mores and hot chocolate among the variety of foods and drinks that had been prepared for the new folks.

Once everything was set up and un-tasteful amounts of glitter had been brushed off of everything, it was time to be welcoming!

And hearing that sounded so familiar to Libby that she felt herself almost melting with the comfortableness of it, until Jo got to that last part, which definitely was not at all like her own father (except maybe the loud part!) and she had to laugh.

"My father," she declared, "would not like this place at all! But," her eyes were shining a little as she leaned in toward Jo, already feeling a close kinship with her, despite the years, and said quietly, in almost a whisper, as if trying to keep it private and between just the two of them, "I'm pretty sure I've talk more to males on the way over here than I have in my entire life, excepting my brothers, but they don't really count."

Jo listened to Libby explain her experience with talking to males and she nodded, "that was like me when I got here," she explained, "at my last school I only had one male teacher and then last semester most of my teachers were male so that was a little odd but my teachers were really nice," she said, "especially Mr. Sims ... he teaches literature classes at the school," she said.

Also he had given her first good report card so that was another reason he was also her favourite teacher.

"The only teacher I've ever had are my parents," Libby offered with another faint smile, "so anyone else, male or female is going to be a little odd. But I'm excited! Especially if they're nice, like you say. Mr. Skywalker on the bus was pretty nice; he said he used to go to school here, even! And that he met his wife here!"

She wasn't really one for romance, actually, but it was hard not to be charmed by that story.

“Oh, what was that like with your parents teaching you?” the only thing Jo’s father had ended up teaching her was that were in fact consequences for bad behaviour. It had ended up being a pretty big lesson to learn.

“I had Mr. Skywalker for Ethics last semester,” she told her, “he can be … intimidating sometimes but most of the time he’s nice,” she nodded, “I didn’t know that he met his wife here,” she told her, she knew he lived with his family on the island but that was it.

"He said he's teaching diplomacy this semester," Libby added, almost a little proud of herself for having insider knowledge already, even though Mr. Skywalker was certainly not teaching that class at all. "I haven't seen my schedule yet," there was so much going on, Jo!, "but I wouldn't mind having his class, I don't think. I feel like having only my parents to teach me in the past is very..." She hesitated, because she didn't want to sound ungrateful; she knew her mother, especially, tried the best she could with such a difficult task on her hands, "...limiting. I'm really excited to see what other people might have to teach me, from different experiences and perspectives, you know? There's so much out there that I could have never even fathomed learning in our small little school room!"

"I must admit I haven't seen my schedule yet either," she admitted, "I just got back from holidays, so I didn't see what classes I have," Jo was going to be rather surprised by a couple of them.

"That's what I've actually enjoyed about the classes here," she admitted, "they're not as strict as the ones in my last school and it's been rather fascinating learning from a 21st century approach, some of the classes I still don't quite understand but the teachers have been really patient,"

"Patient is good," said Libby, with a little flutter of worry in her stomach for finding out exactly just how behind in normal schooling she likely was. "What sort of classes have you taken so far? I know you mentioned a literature class...that would be something I'd enjoy, I love reading, I'm just starting to discover how many books there actually are out there, and it's a little overwhelming!"

Especially when you mostly grew up with just the Bible, fantasy stories with approved Christian undertones, and a bunch of silly teen novels about righteous and pious young women who grow up to be good wives and mothers, and a few history books thrown in for good measure about Ancient Rome and the World Wars, those those were mostly for Just and Val. Those were more topics for boys than girls.

"Oh I've found that I really enjoy reading since I started at Fandom," she said with a smile, "I actually work at the library now, I work on Fridays," she told her, "but last semester I took Fear in Literature, Ethics, Fixin Stuff, Intro to Engineering, Modern World & You and Math," she revealed, "math was a bit of a struggle," she admitted.

"I can see how a class on the Modern World could be useful for someone from 1953!" Libby noted, although, honestly, that still felt way too wild to really believe, but it was also a pretty elaborate lie, if that was the case! "I should really go find out about my own schedule. I really hope I don't have math."

Math was fine, of course, but compared to fixing things and literature? She'd much rather take those!

“Some of it was rather confusing but I did learn about cell phones and the internet,” she revealed, “the internet has been fascinating to learn,”

“I think when I did math last semester it was the first time the school had offeeed it for a while I think I remembered hearing about that, so math may not be offered this semester?” she tried to assure her.
