Wednesday, 4/12, Library is Open

Zero is in a very strange mood today. How strange? Well, she's listening to the Dixie Chicks on her headphones. Come by and rescue her from herself or study or something.

"I need a place to live after graduation," Angel said. "I've narrowed it down to my dimension and Los Angeles, but I need more to go on. Zero was able to help me out and get me started, but we couldn't be sure it was from the right place."

Parker pulled up the interdimensional ethernet, and clicked on the library search engine, and typed in LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA. "You going to tell me what you're looking for, or should I put in my educated guess?" She cocked her head at him. "How soon are you gone after graduation, anyway?"

"Soon as I can?" Angel shrugged. "I've been feeling guilty enough about all the time I'm spending here. Oh, and something in an underground apartment? Good sewer access? Price tag that's not going to put me into my second grave?"

"Guilty for staying? Jeez, Wings. It's not like you're taking up too much space or something. You know how many empty rooms this place has." Parker typed in his parameters as he spoke, then spun on her chair. "Price tag? What are you going to be doing? How much a month are we talking? Given your expenses are blood, shelter, and designer wear, what's your upper limit on a nice morgue with a view?"

"If I'm here I'm not there," Angel said. "Which works out good in the 'staying away from that girl who gets me all tempted to turn evil again' sense, not so much in the 'fulfilling my destiny' sense. And - I dunno. I'm looking to start a business, so I guess I'd need something commercial? Does that make sense?"

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-04-12 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Parker looked thoughtful, and typed in a couple parameters. "That lets out Glendale, the Valley's too far if you want to be L.A.-based, Beverly Hills would break you, obviously... Silver Lake, maybe. What kind of business?" Under her breath, she muttered, "Fine, leave us here."

"Promise not to laugh?"

Re: Third Period

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-04-12 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Parker raised her eyebrows. "I promise to try?" A couple hits came up, Venice Beach, the surrounding areas. "Well, it's at least possible to get something that will only cost a thou or so a month...."

Angel nodded since that was a fair promise, after all.

Then he got totally distracted with prices.

"A thousand a month?"

Re: Third Period

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-04-12 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yessss." Parker folded her arms. "And that's not taking into account different pricing schemes for combined commercial/residential. Owning might be smarter than renting, with these prices. At least a landlord can't kick you out of your crypt that way."

Angel buried his head in his hands. "Gimme a minute. I'm feeling very, very old right now."

Parker snickered. "Okay, if this keeps up? I may not be able to keep that 'don't laugh' promise."

"Do you know what a thousand dollars would buy in my day?" Angel replied, looking pained.

"Small counties?" Parker suggested. "Possibly with people attached?"

"You're not half wrong."

"And if you know where to shop in the world, it still can," Parker says grimly. "So, getting back to the point, which is-- what business are you going into? Should I be looking for something in the retail district, something closer to the beach...?"

"I was thinking maybe a detective agency." It was possible he moved a half inch back, just on the odd chance this declaration earned him a thwapping.

Re: Third Period

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
This is in no way something that Parker expected. She folded her arms. "Hunh."

Re: Third Period

[identity profile] notstakedyet.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
At no insta-thwap, he relaxed by a hair. "You know, as a way to help people?"

Re: Third Period

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Parker nodded slowly, her eyes narrowing. "Without the difficulty of oversight from an official local government agency. And as both an excuse to help people, and an advertising of your availability to do so, it's got definite benefits... again I say, hunh." She cocked an eyebrow at him. "How did you come up with that, exactly?"

Re: Third Period

[identity profile] notstakedyet.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Angel shrugged. "Been pondering it. Seems like a good way to try to do what I want to do. Not like I can actually hang a shingle that says 'Hero for hire'."

Re: Third Period

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
"That has gone out since the Middle Ages. Unfortunately." She cocked her head. "The only problem I can see is your tendency to get in over your head because you leap without thinking. And oh yes, your planning abilities. Okay, two problems."

She glared at the search engine which is coughing up garden apartments and condos in the $2000/mo range, and on a whim, enters another name. Then blinks. "Okay, that's just weird."

Re: Third Period

[identity profile] notstakedyet.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Angel looked dubious. "What?"

Re: Third Period

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
"That hotel you were drawing is still standing. Hyperion, right?" Parker frowned. "Built in 1927, and-- that's it for this site. I wonder if they give tours? You should check it out, see if it matches your memories."

Another quick search, and an elimination of anything too far from the main business districts-- defined by "no sewer access" -- and Parker hit one more button. "It could be worse. The L.A. subway system is supposed to get expanded in the next ten years. You might have more options then. As it is? For a combined business/res place, you're looking at $1200 a month, if you don't actually want to sleep in your office chair."

Re: Third Period

[identity profile] notstakedyet.livejournal.com 2006-04-13 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
"Slept in worse places," Angel pointed out. He mentally filed away what Parker said about the Hyperion. Part of him wondered whatever happened to the demon that had once lived there, but he didn't give it more thought than that.

"Is there any way I can get a printout of this heart attack you're calling a real estate section?" Angel asked. "I know by the time I get home they'll probably be gone, but at least this way I'm getting an idea of where to look."
