Angel shrugged. "Been pondering it. Seems like a good way to try to do what I want to do. Not like I can actually hang a shingle that says 'Hero for hire'."

"That has gone out since the Middle Ages. Unfortunately." She cocked her head. "The only problem I can see is your tendency to get in over your head because you leap without thinking. And oh yes, your planning abilities. Okay, two problems."

She glared at the search engine which is coughing up garden apartments and condos in the $2000/mo range, and on a whim, enters another name. Then blinks. "Okay, that's just weird."

Angel looked dubious. "What?"

[ooc: *scoots you quick email*]

"That hotel you were drawing is still standing. Hyperion, right?" Parker frowned. "Built in 1927, and-- that's it for this site. I wonder if they give tours? You should check it out, see if it matches your memories."

Another quick search, and an elimination of anything too far from the main business districts-- defined by "no sewer access" -- and Parker hit one more button. "It could be worse. The L.A. subway system is supposed to get expanded in the next ten years. You might have more options then. As it is? For a combined business/res place, you're looking at $1200 a month, if you don't actually want to sleep in your office chair."

"Slept in worse places," Angel pointed out. He mentally filed away what Parker said about the Hyperion. Part of him wondered whatever happened to the demon that had once lived there, but he didn't give it more thought than that.

"Is there any way I can get a printout of this heart attack you're calling a real estate section?" Angel asked. "I know by the time I get home they'll probably be gone, but at least this way I'm getting an idea of where to look."

"Sure." Parker hit PRINT, and the computer started spitting out a dozen pages of listings. "There's a place in Costa Mesa for $750. And one in Inglewood for $875. But I think the Inglewood one is too small for a business, honestly. And Costa Mesa's a ways to go. You'd have to get a car, and they don't have parking." She frowned. "Do you have a car?"

Long pause.

"I could get a car," Angel said, in no way sounding defensive except for the part where he totally sounded defensive.

"Okay, you know that it has to be able to run, right?" Parker suddenly glared. "Do you even have a driver's license?"

"I know cars," Angel said, folding his arms and giving her a Look. "I am a guy, you know."

Parker rolled her eyes. "Like I could forget. But it's L.A., you can't drive a junker. And you're going to need a P.I.'s license."

"I like the old classics," Angel said with a smile. Then he looked thoughtful. "I.. could get a P.I. thing. Right?"

Parker cocked her head, hit a couple buttons, then paused. "Yes. As long as you can pass the background check, pass the exam, and show... three years experience in some form of investigations." She frowned. "That part might be tricky to prove."

"Uh...huh," Angel said, thoughtfully. "And when I have a hard time with, oh, any of that? Then what?"

"Then you don't get a license," Parker said slowly, "and can't call yourself a P.I." She looked thoughtful. "Of course, there are ways around that."

Angel pointed at her. "Yes. Ways. Let's go with that. Think outside the box."

Parker gave him an amused look, then pulled up an e-mail program. After a little fiddling, she sent off an e-mail. A few minutes later, she got a reply. She turned the screen so he could see.

WHAT NAME ON LICENSE?

Angel frowned in confusion. Then pointed at himself since, well, who else's name would be on it?

Parker rolled her eyes. "Want to pick a last name? Or a first name? I warn you, Angelo might pick one for you if you don't."

"My name's Angel," he said, prepared to be pouty about this if he had to.

Parker sighed, and typed very quickly.

GIRL'S NAME SINGULAR. MALE?

She glared at the screen. "Give me a minute to reason with him."

"It is not a girl's name," Angel said, as though the screen could hear him.

Parker shook her head. "He's Angelo. You really think he's going to admit that your name is less girly than his?" Then she typed in "Krispy Kremes if you make it just ANGEL" and sent that.

A thinking pause.

WITH CHOCOLATE ICING?

"Oh, they are so going to hate me in Blue Cove...." Yes.

Another minute, and then:

This is to show that the undersigned, Angel, has passed all qualifying exams and background checks pursuant to State Law 34.3.5....

"It scares me how fast you were able to make that happen," Angel said.

"Not me, Angelo. And it damn well should. Fortunately only three people on the planet know what he can do. And he only works for sugar."

"As soon as they've got the affidavit, you're set." Parker crossed her arms, looking pleased.

"Thanks, Parker," Angel said, with geniune gratitude. "I really appreciate it."
