Summer Shenanigans, Wednesday, July 1

Did Anakin care that it was a break week from workshops? He did not.

Did he care about the incessant sounds from the loon following him around? Slightly more, yeah, but glaring at the bird did nothing.

"This week we celebrate the national days of two countries on this continent," Anakin began grandly as everyone gathered in the park. "With parades and explosions, though I've been told not at the same time."

He couldn't help but sounding a little disappointed about that revelation. "So today you will work together in teams to make thematically appropriate--" as determined by a guy not even from this planet who married a girl from a small New England town that celebrated many, many things that weren't actually holidays, "--parade floats and matching costumes. You have all day and many, many craft supplies!"

Because really, what else was going on?

"Listen for your names!"

"O Canada!" Sidon, completely unintentially, somehow managed to strike the notes of the anthem out of sheer enthusiasm, although it dissipated quickly, as he continued on with his excitement and his typical rallying of his troops when he managed to make it for one of these activities. "Marvelous! Why, I already even have the right coloring to perhaps even represent their spectacular flag!"

"Canada," Jules mused. "That's... one of the neighboring kingdoms, isn't it?"

"Canada's great!" Mae said. "They have . . . beavers?"

She knew next to nothing about Canada.

"And French," offered Rosa, helpfully.

Too bad Blackstone wasn't in on this one, then maybe they could have some horrifying animatronic French-speaking beavers...

Summer took a moment to consider her group for this thing.

"Yeaaaah," she realized, "I'm pretty much going to wind up the authority on this one, aren't I?"

SO THIS SHOULD BE INTERESTING.

"At least two of you look like you could have just walked right out of that time period."

And, to Shuri's question: "It's the year of America's independance. When we were all finally, screw you, England, we're doing our own thing. So like, the revolution and the Constitution and powdered wigs and all that."

Huh, that actually hit pretty close to home. He hoped that Flint had nothing to do with this. The man had enough of an ego. "Well good for the colonies."

"Do I get to blow something up?" Sabine checked.

That was really Anakin's fault.

Liam only knew you from, well, these activities and your radio broadcasts, Tahani, but somehow he doubted the veracity of that statement.

Still, the fun of these things was just rolling with the crazy sometimes, and that included letting people do their thing, even if they weren't especially good at their thing. Maybe especially then.

"Sounds good to me."

It would be very Coachella adjacent.

"Wonderful! Now how Wild a West are we talking? I don't think I can get Will Smith to show up on such short notice."

Elli looked deeply confused.

"Why are we making floats to celebrate wars?"

That seemed like a thing that shouldn't be celebrated to her?

"I don't think," Astrid offered, "it's so much to celebrate the war, as much as it is to celebrate the victory in that war. And remember the history of it and honor the people who fought in those wars."

Re: WWI

[personal profile] howareyanow 2020-07-01 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"World War One was a global war that lasted nearly four years, considered at the time to be the 'war to end all wars,' up until World War II came 'round to show it what's what. Sparked when Bosnian Serb Yugoslav nationalist Gavrilo Princip shot the Austro-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo. And in marches the rest of Europe and a little bit of Asia and the majority of the North American continent in what would turn out to be a major turning point in the socio-political enterprise of the entire world, sparking numerous uprisings and revolutions, as well as the Treaty of Versailles. It lead to the conclusive termination of the Austro-Hungarian, German, Ottoman, and Russian Empires, and the creation of the League of Nations in an attempt to prevent more world wars, but, seein' as there's a second one, you can guess just about how well that worked out fer us."

Well, Iris, you asked.

She had, in fact.

"Alright, history book, I got it," she said, frowning at their float. "Can we just have an assassination happen on the float?"

Iris, no.
