No one should be surprised to see the bleachers set up in the park on Wednesday mornings any more, and should probably be giving the center of town a pass if they didn't want to be voluntold into an Exciting Summer Game of some type.

At least snacks were provided?

Anakin was in the middle of the park as usual, surrounded by rope, two-by-fours, and other building materials. Next to him, chittering, was Leroy the Radio Squirrel wearing a jaunty "press" fedora.

"Leroy has informed me at length," Anakin began dryly, "that the squirrels are feeling unappreciated. And while they cannot bite you and make you behave like a moron for an hour like the gremlins, they remind me that they can absolutely destroy every single being here's reputation by making up a story about them and having it end up on the radio."

Anakin glared at the squirrel. "Which is super unethical and definitely prosecutable."

Leroy shrugged, unmoved.

"So today we are going to make an obstacle course for squirrels," Anakin said. "Each team will be in charge of coming up with a portion of an obstacle that you think will stop the radio squirrels from getting to the final prize at the end of the course: rum."

Because of course.

"Listen for your names and get your shirts! There will be seven teams of three."

"Oh," said Summer miserably, "it'll definitely work. But I am also 100% down with other bait. Like, literally, any other bait. Hey! How about cupcakes!"

Sorry, Stark, that was pretty much the only thing Summer really knew about you so far.

That's ok Summer. He hasn't said much about himself in class!

"There might be cupcakes on the food tables," Stark agreed. "And it would be problem solving with baked goods."

"The problem with that," said Amaya, now looking very serious and thoughtful with what you may say was her game face on, "is that there are cupcakes on the food tables, which makes a cupcake on our course not a very enticing offer. Unless we were to take all the cupcakes, but even then, Fandom squirrels aren't as prone to sweets as other squirrels, like, say, your Daventry or Avalon squirrels. Now, I can put together some pretty good traps and pitfalls that'll be tricky for anyone with a tail to get out of, and I've instilled a solid aversion to whirly blade thingies in them by now, so if someone gets me a paper, I can sketch out the blueprint in my head right now, but I'm telling you, the date thing will work, we should st least include it as an extra layer, if anything. Same as the cupcakes." She gave Stark a nid. "You can't have too many options, I say!"

Stark blinked a few times before nodding in return.

"Do you trap the squirrels often? Or try?"

"We could try to lure them in with food and then have the date possibility presented somehow? 'Bring this cupcake to Summer, it's her favorite'?" Should he be offering up a student of his as bait like this? Probably not. But it was just the squirrels and they rarely caused any real harm as far as he could remember.

"Trap?" asked Amaya. "No. Get rid of? Constantly. But here's the thing, you're thinking about it too complicated, which, usually, I would respect and admire, but sometimes, the solution is really much more simple than that. We just put a sign up that says, 'any squirrel that stays here until the end of the activity will win one date with Summer Smith'. I guarantee you we will prevent at least one squirrel from finishing the course. And as for the rest? Those we can lure with the cupcakes and the traps. I'm thinking trap doors. And lots of them!"

"Simple can be better," Stark agreed. "Sometimes complicated plans end up with money that eats your ship. But that could have happened with any plan." But it didn't, did it?

"....like with this one," said Summer, who was definitely going to be distracted from her anti-dating squirrels stance on this to bring her teammates' attention to a new twist in their sage. "Only, instead of money eating our ship, it's teal deer eating our supplies."

She pointed, in case they needed the help.

They had to have gotten to that detail eventually, right?

"There is so much food over there," Stark said to the deer. "Why aren't you over there? Eating snacks? Or...grass?"

He sighed. "At least they aren't eating us." He really ought to know better than to say that out loud. And yet.
