No one should be surprised to see the bleachers set up in the park on Wednesday mornings any more, and should probably be giving the center of town a pass if they didn't want to be voluntold into an Exciting Summer Game of some type.

At least snacks were provided?

Anakin was in the middle of the park as usual, surrounded by rope, two-by-fours, and other building materials. Next to him, chittering, was Leroy the Radio Squirrel wearing a jaunty "press" fedora.

"Leroy has informed me at length," Anakin began dryly, "that the squirrels are feeling unappreciated. And while they cannot bite you and make you behave like a moron for an hour like the gremlins, they remind me that they can absolutely destroy every single being here's reputation by making up a story about them and having it end up on the radio."

Anakin glared at the squirrel. "Which is super unethical and definitely prosecutable."

Leroy shrugged, unmoved.

"So today we are going to make an obstacle course for squirrels," Anakin said. "Each team will be in charge of coming up with a portion of an obstacle that you think will stop the radio squirrels from getting to the final prize at the end of the course: rum."

Because of course.

"Listen for your names and get your shirts! There will be seven teams of three."

There are unlimited ~~moddable~~ supplies: wood, circuitry, tools...and glitter.

Because Fandom.

You have to make an obstacle that takes up roughly a meter of space (you can get bigger) and doesn't actually kill the squirrel. Other than that, it is up to your team!

I personally am not at "making an elaborate obstacle course for squirrels" level of stir-crazy yet, but no promises about July.

Duke was resigned to his fate. He would be made to come here every Wednesday and participate in some ridiculous, likely personally embarrassing game.

But hey, at least he wasn't alone. And the food was pretty good.

Mae loved Wednesdays. She grabbed a pile of snacks and waited to find out what ridiculousness she'd get to get up to this week.

"Oh, sure," Rosa murmured after listening to the names, "they call Blackstone in on the construction challenge..."

"GO TEAM CRUISELINE BIKINI!" Mae shouted as she pulled on her t-shirt.

And ripped off its sleeves.

"So . . . what are we doing again?"

No one let Mae handle a power tool.

"Don't suppose the squirrels want to chase Beaker around and try to eat him? Everything else seems to. . . ."

Duke was just considering a more serious suggestion and looking over the materials on offer when he heard an unfortunately familiar growl from a nearby bush.

"No." He backed up sharply. "No. I am not interested in hallucinating today!"

And here Freya was just trying to figure out how to squeeze in a good rat-race joke, whenhe ears perked up on the growl and Duke's reaction.

"What was that?" she asked, regretting having left her spear behind. Which now felt like a real rookie mistake.

"Gremlin," Duke said. Dammit, now he was going to have to put himself between the bushes and the poor ignorant new kid. "Their venom is psychoactive, and they really like to bite people."

"Yes!" said Summer, with a triumphant fist. "The construction queen and cupcake guy! This is gonna be a goooood team, I can feel it!"

"Meep meep meep meep mee," Beaker said nervously. "MEEP."

They did seem to have a taste for Muppet felt.

"I feel like our team name should also be inspiration for our device," Shuri said, pulling out her tablet to sketch out some ideas. "Do squirrels ice skate?"

"We have to make a gremlin obstacle course...thing," Tahani said. "I could call my dear friend Stephen Hawking, but I'm not sure he'll be awake with the time difference."

"Is that the dude with the robot voice? I thought he did science stuff, not construction."

"What's a homesteady corn hide?" Steve muttered, pulling his (too-tight) shirt on. "And does anyone have a great idea for squirrel obstacles?"
