"Congratulations, guys," Duke said when class was set to start. "We made it all the way through the semester without eating or getting eaten by any birds."

Sure, he may have turned into one for a day or so, but that wasn't besides the point.

"Anyway. I hope you all brought your own bird, because you're making the hat of your choice for it for your final project. I brought Polly." He gestured to a porg on the desk. "And I'm going to fold him a paper hat, because it turns out millinery is a pain in the ass. Now get to work and thanks for a not-terrible semester."

All, what, four sentences of it?

Did you bring your bird? Is said bird already pissed at you? Is it going to let you get anywhere near it with a hat? Good luck!

Ulysses produced a slightly crumpled origami bird from one of his pockets, then proceeded to try and make it a little fiddler cap out of felt.

Anyone bringing a live bird to this class was nuts, okay? Also Ulysses had needed something to do with his hands when he'd ended up on a conspiracy theory video binge on Youtube last night, anyway.

Juillenne did not bring a bird.

No, what she had done, was go into the Preserve and find herself an alot of birds.

"... What the fuck is that?"

"I'm... honestly not entirely sure?" Jules admitted. It seemed vaguely quadrupedal, except, you know, for the fact that the legs were birds. And the body was birds. And the head was an exceptionally large bird.

"I went into the Preserve looking for an interesting bird and... this followed me out instead," she shrugged.

"Of course it did," Ulysses replied, with the tone of someone who suddenly felt like he'd already been in Fandom way too long. "I mean, why wouldn't this place just have --"

He gestured futilely at the alot and its generally bird-riffic everything.

"--creatures that are made of birds just roaming around the forest? That makes like perfect sense." It did not. And yet in a crazy way it did? Either way, Ulysses pulled his hand back and ran his fingers through his hair. "Jesus."

If it helped, Ulysses, there were actually many different kinds of alots in the Preserve?

One might even say there were a lot of them.

"It? They? Are very well-behaved, at least?" Jules said with a shrug. That's because you were a naturalist, Juillenne, and there wasn't a living non-sapient creature out there that wouldn't roll over and do exactly what you asked of it.

That would not help at all, actually.

Ulysses looked the alot over, and shook his head. "I guess so?" he said. "I mean, it's no terror bird." He was still traumatized from that class.

"My brother would not send me an ostrich," Shuri said, sounding extremely disappointed in him, "so I have a secretary bird instead because his girlfriend is much more reasonable."

For given value of reasonable. "And she will wear a fedora as she is a professional, working woman."

He and Polly seem pretty cozy, honestly. At what point do you suppose he'll give up and admit he has a pet?

Octavia was waiting for him outside the classroom when the class ended, holding a little takeaway box from JGoB.

She didn't know much about how school worked here, but she did know this was his last session this spring.

"Ha yun, seda."

Duke grinned to see her. "Seda. I don't remember that one."

"I think I've only used it once," Octavia replied with an amused look. "And you didn't latch on to it the same way you did to meizen."

She held the box out for him.

"It means 'teacher'."

“Which I barely am,” Duke said, taking the box and peeking inside. “And don’t have to be again for at least a couple weeks.”

As though he didn’t enjoy teaching.

“Mochof, gona. This is a great way to end the semester.”

There was a fairly ridiculous chocolate cupcake in the box. Sprinkles on top of the frosting and everything.

"De nada," Octavia told him, smiling. "Congratulations for surviving the birds." Maybe she should've asked them to try and put a bird motif on the cupcake, but, oh well. "Also, figured I'd ask if you wanted to celebrate another way, too."

"I want to celebrate in any way you can think of," Duke said, pulling her into a (chaste, they were still in the school) kiss. "And I am perfectly happy not to look at any other birds right now."

Polly hopped from foot to foot with a squawk.

"Present company excluded."

That also helped keep the kiss school-appropriate, because Octavia had to duck her head with a quiet chuckle, looking down at the porg.

"Oh, of course he's here. Ha yun, strikon."

"The last assignment was 'bring your own bird'. If I didn't bring him, the school might have turned me into one again."
