"Congratulations, guys," Duke said when class was set to start. "We made it all the way through the semester without eating or getting eaten by any birds."

Sure, he may have turned into one for a day or so, but that wasn't besides the point.

"Anyway. I hope you all brought your own bird, because you're making the hat of your choice for it for your final project. I brought Polly." He gestured to a porg on the desk. "And I'm going to fold him a paper hat, because it turns out millinery is a pain in the ass. Now get to work and thanks for a not-terrible semester."

"Chocolate cake," Duke decided. "Nothing better than chocolate cake when you're stoned."

"I'll put in an order with the bakery," Octavia promised. "Chocolate cake it is. You handle the other snacks, I'll take care of that."

"Aye-aye, co-captain. Looking forward to it." He tilted his head a little. "I should make sure Larceny has somewhere to go."

"You should." Because Octavia continued to have zero inclination to boot Larceny out of her home without prior arrangements. "Isn't this the day she tends to hang out at the diner?"

"You know what, I think it is. Guess I'll swing by on my way home, then."

Octavia tilted her head.

"And I guess I could also have the bakery deliver something for her, too," she mused.

"Not a bad plan. She's about the most food-motivated person I've ever met."

"I've noticed." And how. "So I figure a bunch of cupcakes should make her hate us less."

She did not, for the record, actually think Larceny would hate them.

Octavia's chuckle was a rough little sound.

"Mmm. True, we are. But you know what I mean."

"I do," Duke said. "I don't like kicking her out of her home anymore than you do, even if it is just for an afternoon."

"And so, bribes," Octavia concluded, and gave him a little shoulder bump. "We'll be okay, and so will she."

Octavia's smile went wider again.

"You want yu briyon gona to walk you back into town?" she offered.

"I don't think I'd ever say no to that," Duke said. "Or any other company she wants to give me."

"Well, I'm gonna go to the bakery while you go to the diner," Octavia replied, "and I have to swing by Turtle & Canary --"

Okay, she didn't have to, but grocery store sake was an important tradition she didn't like skipping.

Of course it was! She had to get her fill of the other guy in town with his nose and facial hair.

"I'd love to. Preserve? Spend some time in your world, then Friday spend time in mine?"

And there went Octavia's face again, looking absolutely thrilled. "Yes, please, let's do that."

It was like she'd fallen in love with him for a reason or something.
