Anakin was nowhere to be seen when Ethics class began, but there was an enormous bowl of (real, this time) Halloween candy on his desk.

There was a sign next to it that said, "TAKE ONLY THREE."

Inside the bowl were full-sized candy bars, as well as smaller "fun-sized" ones, Reese's Cups, Starbursts, those weird Bit o' Honeys, and even apples and boxes of raisins.

Was there a trick here today too?

Oh, probably. Pick your treats anyway.

Anakin came through the door just as everyone had finished making their choices.

Almost like he'd been watching them. Weird.

"Right," he said. "Explain what you took or didn't take from the bowl."

"I just grabbed a bunch of shirt," Eleanor said with a shrug and chucked another Bit o' Honey back at the bowl

That stuff was nasty.

It really was. Anakin would automatically distrust anyone who wanted a Bit o' Honey.

"Without caring about what the sign said," he said.

"What sign?"

She might have noticed the sign. Or might not have. Honestly with a person this self-centered and selfish it wouldn't have mattered.

Looking at the aforementioned sign, Eleanor's mouth formed a tiny "o". "Oh. That sign."

Anakin would no doubt notice she was now trying to quickly either eat or lick the candy so no one else would want it.

"I took three because this was clearly a test," Sabine said.

"And if it wasn't clearly a test, would you have behaved differently?" Anakin asked.

"I really only recognized the fruit," Tisarwat explained with a shrug, because she knew the Dean understood that she wasn't exactly from around here, "but with everyone's hands being in theh bowl," she was also not at all shy about her aversion to bare hands around here, especially not when so many people had been accomodating, "they really lost their appeal. So I figured I'd go for a variety, since that would give me a better range of experiences. I went with a large package of something called a 3 Muskateers," she held up the large candy bar, "then a smaller one called Mr. Goodbar," and that one next, although these names were ridiculous, "and then this, Smarties?"

Which made her wonder if they were some sort of brain-function enhancing mediation, which was intriguing her far more than she thought it should.

"That's an excellent way to approach it," Anakin said. "The Smarties, unfortunately, do not make you smarter."

He'd been super disappointed about that.

Del looked at the three candies she'd taken. "Um. The sign said to? So I took three? Nobody seemed to want these, that other girl was throwing them back at the bowl? I don't know. I've never had these before. Maybe they're good? They might be bad. That's okay. I've eaten bad things before. I don't mind. I don't want them to feel bad. They're candy, they're trying their best."

A small shrug. "I didn't take any of the other stuff because other people seemed to want it more and I don't need it."

"Would you have taken fewer if the sign hadn't said to take three?" Anakin asked.

Elisabeth nodded at Tisarwat. "I also only recognized the fruit," she said. "But raisins are a rare enough treat that I didn't need anything more."

Raisins. For Halloween. The horror.

Anakin's eyebrow arched up. "Raisins are a treat for you?"

His wife was appalled somewhere. Raisins were health food for a Gilmore Girl.

Okuyasu had half a Snickers in his mouth. He didn't swallow before talking.

"...it said three," he replied. "This is three."

Well, two and a half, now.

"You can't say I didn't follow the rule!"

"I can't," Anakin said, sounding amused. "I just wanted to know why you picked the ones you did."

"I took three because, like, Sabine said, it was obviously a test!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Nina chirped. "And, like, I only took one candy bar because I like fruit better and apples and raisins are pretty sweet anyway???????????????"

"Because it's first period?" Anakin asked, smiling.

"So you always like to follow the crowd?" Anakin asked.

"I took three: two apples and a candy, for the same reasons that she said," Illyana replied, pointing at Sabine. "A lure sitting out like that is usually a trap. Nothing is ever actually free."

Anakin nodded. "None are poisoned, I promise."

"I took things I didn't know yet," Lana said. "I'm not eating any of it until I can ensure it isn't poisoned," if nothing else, she'd had that class already, "but if it's safe, I'll get to try something new."

Anakin smiled slightly. "Too much paperwork in poisoning an entire class. They are safe."

"I didn't take any," Nell said. "I mostly don't trust stuff just all set out open like that."

She did not say that she wasn't sure how far he could be trusted. That would just be plumb rude.

"Even when it's individually wrapped?" Anakin asked.

"Sweets are not something that I'm used to yet," Evie admitted. "So because it seemed to be a test, I took three of the small ones that looked interesting." She looked at him. "And no offense, but I will never, ever touch an apple that is just waiting there."
