Ethics, Wednesday, September 18, 2019

Anakin was nowhere to be seen when Ethics class began, but there was an enormous bowl of (real, this time) Halloween candy on his desk.

There was a sign next to it that said, "TAKE ONLY THREE."

Inside the bowl were full-sized candy bars, as well as smaller "fun-sized" ones, Reese's Cups, Starbursts, those weird Bit o' Honeys, and even apples and boxes of raisins.

Was there a trick here today too?

Oh, probably. Pick your treats anyway.

"Well, yes," Elisabeth said, confused by his confusion. "We're not near vineyard country, so they're really rare. Most of our sweet things are honey or berries in the summer. Apples in the fall. That kind of thing. Raisins can be baked into cookies or scones and things."

Elisabeth eyed him, the chocolate, and then the sign. "Do I have to give one back?" she asked, not one hundred percent sure this wasn't a test.

Or maybe, Elisabeth, people just felt bad for you getting excited over raisins.

Elisabeth glanced around at the class, worried that this kind of favoritism would make it even harder to make friends than usual, but nodded.

Look, curiosity was a powerful motivator.

She carefully unwrapped the candy, eyeing the dark brick of chocolate. The kitchens had some at Summershall, but it was kept under literal lock and key, much like the spices, and considered far too dear for mere apprentices. Taking a nibble, she blinked. "Ooooh!"

Elisabeth had foregone the nibble in exchange for a full bite. So she settled for nodding enthusiastically in answer.

Okay this was amazing. No wonder it wasn't for apprentices!
