Ethics, Wednesday, September 11, 2019 [1st period]

Anakin was at the front of the room with a huge, empty bowl in front of him. There were equally empty bowls in front of all of the students.

"Because I'm not all terrible," Anakin began with a tiny smile, "I've brought chocolate pudding for everyone. My bowl, of course, is too big for me to finish, so if you need more after you're done with the portion in front of you, feel free to come up and get some more. If you are lactose intolerant or allergic to chocolate, I have other options, too."

Of nothing. Because there was literally nothing in the bowls, kids. "Feel free to share with each other, too!"

Was there an ethical lesson here today? Of course. Anakin was just...testing to see how you all reacted.

Lana watched for a minute, fascinated. "Those look pretty."

Del beamed. "Thanks! Want one? They're really good! There's no green, though. Green is not a good flavor for ice cream."

Lana reached toward one hesitantly. "They're ice cream?" She hadn't seen it like this before.

Delirium nodded her head so vigorously the hood of her cloak fell over her face. She reached and pushed it off, pththtpth'ing her hair out of her eyes. "Yes! They're ice cream between cookies because that's just the best!" Shot a look at Dean, "Wayy better than invisible pudding. And? You don't need a spoon to eat 'em!"

Lana reached for a blue one; blue was normal-milk colour, after all.

"Do you just...bite them?" She turned it to a few different angles. It seemed like that would be cold.

She grinned. "I like your cloak. You should get something to stiffen it a bit so it stays in place."

Del nodded and picked up a peach one to show her. She took an exaggerated bite and chewed, mumbling, "It's good!" around it.

When she swallowed, she beamed, "Thank you! Won't it stop swishing around if I make it all stiff? I want it to swish. It's supposed to be very swishy like Dean's."

Lana snickered. The dean was very dramatic, wasn't he? "Not the whole thing," she clarified, "just the hood. That part doesn't need to swish, does it?"

She took a tentative bite of the ice cream sandwich, then frowned at it, a bit confused. Right, blue didn't mean just 'milk'. "Is this some sort of fruit flavour?"

Del considered it and shook her head from side to side to see about the hood. Which did not swish, no. It just slumped over her face again and drew a weary little echo of a sigh from inside until she pushed it up again. "It doesn't swish," she agreed, "The bottom part swishes really good but the hood's pretty bad at it."

And then she felt sorry for the hood and gave it a tiny pat of one hand. It's ok, hood, you could go ahead and be slumpy not-swish, she'd just have to love you how you were. Until she bought some starch.

Del made a face at the ice cream question, "They sayyyyy it's blue raspberry but it doesn't taste of blue nor of raspberries. It mostly tastes of sugar, I think?"

"Huh. Sugar and a little sour." Lana shrugged. "It's not bad, just not what I was expecting." She took another bite and finished it before leaning in and whispering. "I think it takes practice to get as swishy as the Dean's cloak."

She wondered if he used the Force to make his look more dramatic.

"What were you expecting?" Delirium asked curiously, "Blueberry? Cheese?" She nibbled at her lower lip for a minute and slowly nodded. "He's really good at being swishy. It gets all floaty swishy, you know? His cloak, kind of like a ghost."

Only nothing like a ghost. Ghosts looked like people.

"Just plain," Lana said. "I'm used to blue milk. I keep hoping someone here will use it. Your world's ghosts are swishy?" She asked curiously. "Ours just look like they did in life, mostly."

"Oh," Del answered, "There was purple milk on Monday, did you see? It made the pancakes pretty. This is my world so the ghosts here are sort of mine? Not really, they're mostly my sister's? But some of them are definitely mine. They aren't swishy though, they look like people. Cartoon ghosts are swishy. Cartoons are fun."

"I did see! It wasn't quite like home, but closer than white milk is." She thought about the rest and shook her head. "I don't think I've seen cartoon ghosts. I'll have to take a look."

"There are some on TV sometimes," Delirium offered, "On the weekends sometimes I get real bored and turn the TV on and there are cartoons!" Like magic! Every Saturday morning!

"Okay, I'll have to try that, then." She took another bite, then nodded at the ice cream sandwich. "Are these real? I mean, are they actual food, or are they like the things in the Danger Shop that are only real in there?"

She probably should have asked that before eating one, but she was going to keep eating it now, since it hadn't hurt her yet.

"They're really food," Del assured her, "I even made them visible. Unlike the pudding."

unusual_sith: (uh-huh)

"There is no pudding," Lana said.

Then she thought about it. "Could you make there be pudding? Then we could all share some actual pudding."

"There's pudding," Delirium said, "It's invisible. Dean's a teacher. He wouldn't lie." ahahahahahahahaha*cough*

She reached out and pushed against nothing visible. There was the sound of ceramic breaking a moment later and a loud slop noise of a semi-gelatinous substance hitting a surface.

unusual_sith: (oh really?)

Re: Right, so...lecture.

"Teachers often lie," Lana said. Then she blinked. "You actually have invisible pudding? I just had nothing."

Re: Right, so...lecture.

[personal profile] following_my_fishie 2019-09-14 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)

"They're not supposed to lie," Del was a little shocked, "They're teachers!"

Oh, Del.

She blinked right back at Lana. "Maybe.. um.. Maybe not everyone had pudding? Maybe it was to see who really had pudding and who didn't but would say they did and who'd say they didn't? I.. don't understand, but maybe it's about how ethical it is to not give everyone pudding and to give nobody spoons?"

Beat.

"Unless some people only got invisible spoons.." She looked around but.. no, no spoons. Shook her head and shrugged. "I don't understand. This seems, um. Sorta dumb?"

Re: Right, so...lecture.

"I think the point is to see how we react to dumb things," Lana said. "Or maybe to teach that teachers can lie. Or both." She wasn't concerned; she had plenty of experience in that.

Re: Right, so...lecture.

"To ready us for people lying to us or being stupid in the future?" Lana guessed. That seemed logical, anyway.

"Mind you, I'm not sure how that relates to Ethics, though."

Re: Right, so...lecture.

[personal profile] following_my_fishie 2019-09-15 04:42 am (UTC)(link)

"People lie all the time," Del sighed, "Mostly to themselves. Sometimes to other people. Not all lies are bad. Some are? I don't like those kinds. I don't understand ethics and I don't know how pudding fits in. I don't think pudding has ethics, I think pudding just is. Maybe that makes pudding better than people. I don't know."

Re: Right, so...lecture.

[personal profile] unusual_sith 2019-09-15 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"If pudding were aware enough to have ethics, I doubt we'd be eating it," Lana said. "I think the ethics are more in how we react to someone telling us there's pudding when there isn't any. Or at least, when there isn't any for most of us."
