Ethics, Wednesday, September 11, 2019 [1st period]

Anakin was at the front of the room with a huge, empty bowl in front of him. There were equally empty bowls in front of all of the students.

"Because I'm not all terrible," Anakin began with a tiny smile, "I've brought chocolate pudding for everyone. My bowl, of course, is too big for me to finish, so if you need more after you're done with the portion in front of you, feel free to come up and get some more. If you are lactose intolerant or allergic to chocolate, I have other options, too."

Of nothing. Because there was literally nothing in the bowls, kids. "Feel free to share with each other, too!"

Was there an ethical lesson here today? Of course. Anakin was just...testing to see how you all reacted.

"But... why?" Delirium asked, just a tad plaintively.

"To ready us for people lying to us or being stupid in the future?" Lana guessed. That seemed logical, anyway.

"Mind you, I'm not sure how that relates to Ethics, though."

"People lie all the time," Del sighed, "Mostly to themselves. Sometimes to other people. Not all lies are bad. Some are? I don't like those kinds. I don't understand ethics and I don't know how pudding fits in. I don't think pudding has ethics, I think pudding just is. Maybe that makes pudding better than people. I don't know."

"If pudding were aware enough to have ethics, I doubt we'd be eating it," Lana said. "I think the ethics are more in how we react to someone telling us there's pudding when there isn't any. Or at least, when there isn't any for most of us."

"People," Del sighed, "will eat just about anything. I don't know why he didn't give everyone pudding. I would've. But there weren't any spoons."

"Maybe that's also part of the test, or maybe he just forgot," Lana said. She actually wondered which it was. Was it a tell that he knew there wasn't pudding?

"I still don't understand how it's ethics," Del said plaintively, "It's puddings."

"Me neither." Lana shrugged.
