"Good morning!" Anakin blared through the microphone. "An essential skill of a camper is the ability to feed yourself over a campfire--BEAKER, GET AWAY FROM THE CAMPFIRES."

There was slightly charred sounding apologetic meeping as Beaker moved away from one of the two campfires that had been carefully set up in the park. There were rickety looking folding tables arranged nearby the fires with cutting boards, knives, bowls, and other ~~moddable~~ kitchen items nearby. There was, however, no power. Everything would have to be chopped and grated and opened from a can by hand.

"Today, you will be paired up and asked to feature one of two different sets of menu items," Anakin continued. "And then you will present them to our esteemed panel of judges: Summer, Hannibal, Peebee, and Vette." He pointed to the judges. "Your meal must be cooked over the campfire. We have an array of other ingredients--" he pointed to a pantry and set of mini fridges that Beaker was now standing near, so expect that to spontaneously fall over any minute now, "--for you to use to supplement your original ingredients, but you must use the three ingredients we give you." He took a deep breath. "Please don't give the judges food poisoning, and remember that presentation matters. Listen for your names!"

"Well," said Prompto, as he looked over the ingredients thoughtfully and just barely sang out the next part, "one of these things is not like the others..."

Kathy stopped when she saw her partner, head cocked slightly and brow furrowed. "I don't...do I know you?" she asked, dubiously.

He didn't exactly look familiar, but there was something about his nose maybe....

At her side, Ronin also tilted his head, his tail a banner high in the air. "He doesn't smell familiar," he reported.

"Still not used to that," Kathy said, looking down at her dog.

"Naahh, man," Prompto said, with a grin that he couldn't have helped even if he tried...and the same went with his blush, "I think I'd have remembered that."

What? She was cute! Prompto Argentum did not forget cute girls! Although...despite that...he had to admit, there was something weirdly familiar about her that he just...couldn't...put his finger on...

Either way, neither of those things really matter right now because there was a talking dogs and he laughed.

"So I take it he usually doesn't talk like Delirium's dog and this is the island thing, right? So cool. I cannot wait until my shift at the shelter tomorrow, me and those puppies are going to have the best time."

It was...kind of surprising he hadn't just moved into the shelter for however long this lasted, especially since, knowing his luck, it would be all over tomorrow, or something.

Okay, so the blush was also weirdly familiar. And the mention of the shelter...

"Oh so it is everything?" Kathy asked. "I wasn't sure. That makes more sense. Not just you, Ronin."

"I hadn't thought so," Ronin said, giving his tail a little wag at Prompto. "No pets, please. I am on duty. Even though I don't have a vest. I must be vigilant."

Kathy hid a smile and knelt, wrapping her arms around his neck and chest. "You are the goodest boy," she murmured, unconsciously dropping into a kind of little girl singsong.

Man, this whole where had he seen this girl before?? thing was going to bug him all day, wasn't it?

Because there definitely seemed to be...something about her...like his brain was jogging for something, but never quite getting there.

It was easier, really, just to focus on the dog, instead, though he probably would have done that, anyway.

"You got it," he assured the dog with a nod, pounding his chest a couple of times, then quirking up his chin. "Respect, dude. Think you can spare a moment, though, to offer some thoughts? On what you would do with...these? You know....from a dog's perspective."

Yes, Prompto, because that's what the judges wanted. Food from a dog's perspective.

...but he wouldn't be Prompto if there was a dog on his team and he didn't ask.

"I would eat them all," Ronin said with immense dignity. "Even though the white things would get stuck in my mouth and fur."

"No," Kathy said immediately. "No marshmallows for puppies."

Ronin sniffed. "Of course not. I am On Duty."

"Hmm, okay," Kathy said, trying to thing. "Aren't fire-roasted tomatoes kinda...sweet? Sun-dried ones are, anyway."

You're reaching, Kathy.

That was, really, a very dog-like answer, and Prompto firmly approve of it, especially since he was half thinking he'd just go for cut-up hot dogs on a bed of tomatoes and marshmallows and call it good.

With maybe some Sriracha, since Vette was judging.

"Kind of, I guess?" Prompto shrugged, wondering if it would be cheating to call up Iggy right now and ask for suggestions. "I mean, I see the tomatoes and I see hot dogs, and I automatically think: well, can we make ketchup? It doesn't seem like it would be that hard to make, y'know?"

"Well, ketchup has a bunch of other ingredients in it, like seasonings and vinegar," Kathy said thoughtfully. But maybe we could mash them down and mix them with melted marshmallow? To make, like, a sweet, kind of acidic sauce?"

"Is it...a bad thing that I kind of want to just do that, just to see how it turns out?" Prompto asked. "I mean, if it's terrible, we'll at least get the satisfaction of seeing the look on all the judges' faces when they try it, and, hell, that's almost better than winning!"

Seriously. Every single one of those people, he would enjoy subjecting them to that immensely.

Out of love, though, of course.

"I mean, it's gotta be better than, like, trying to make some kind of gross ambrosia salad and trying to feed them that, right?" Kathy asked. "We're at least taking the chance to try to, like, transform the ingredients."

Kathy, no. This wasn't Chopped. Please stop.
