Even Anakin wasn't going to invite the entire town to stand outside in radiation and next to a bomb just for a day of competition (though yes, he had considered in for a hot minute). Today's event was being held in the community center and the flickering lights and general malaise just kind of added to what would be the world's weirdest fashion show.

Because, yes, there was a catwalk set up down the center, currently being sat upon by a small herd (committee? Murder?) of gremlins.

"Today we will reprise last year's highly popular gremlin fashion show," Anakin yelled into the completely unnecessary bullhorn.

It was only popular if you'd talked to Sparkle and Brooke, who'd been judges last year, but details. "You will be paired up!" Anakin continued. "You will have a variety of crafting supplies including macrame patterns, felt, rope, yarn, glue, staplers, and stun guns!"

Stun guns were craft supplies if you squinted? Maybe?

"You will have a half hour to create your masterpiece, another fifteen minutes to fit your model into it without getting bitten--" so good luck with that, "and then send him, her, or them down the runway for our guest judges to assess your work!"

He gestured at the chairs next to the runway. "Please welcome--" he frowned as Beaker handed him the list, "--Sparkle, Brooke, Keyleth, and..Camden."

This wasn't exactly what he meant when he'd asked Beaker to round up some catty judges. Oh well!

"Listen for your names!"

Okuyasu shook his head. "I can sew, though!"

You couldn't exactly buy as customized of a school uniform as Okuyasu's from the shop.

"We could turn a t-shirt into long tube dress or something? Give it some real nineties flair?"

To be fair, he was from the nineties.

Paris nodded. "With a little crocheted shrug over it? Can we make combat boots out of felt? It's not really the 90s if they aren't wearing a dress with combat boots."

Okuyasu grinned. "Of course it's not," he said. "I think we're going to end up with a very... Spice Gremlin vibe to this all. Hopefully that's what the judges want. What they really, really want."

Paris reached out to whack him with a rolled-up macrame pattern. "No. No terrible 90s jokes. You're here to work."

Paris was suuuuper serious about her gremlin fashion.

"Gyeh!" Okuyasu let out a yelp but accepted the hit. He was used to it.

"Okay, okay," he added, quickly. He went about cutting pieces that should approximate gremlin felt army boots. "Do you think we should give it a crown or a wig or something? So there's something on top.

He was absolutely picturing giving this gremlin a weird headband crown like that lousy mangaka Rohan. What an absolute burn on that person who would never know it happened.

"Only if you're putting it on the thing," Paris declared. "I'm delegating that to you."

Okuyasu looked up from gluing the felt together and cast a glance at the gremlins, and then the stun gun.

"...are they particularly fighty?"

No one had warned him about them.

There was a pregnant pause as Paris stopped her macrame-ing to think about what she should say.

"You'll be fine."

PARIS.

"Well then, I will gladly do that," Okuyasu said. "If you have faith in me, so do I."

He nodded sagely and went about gluing the rest of the boots together.

"I mean, I helped keep a plant that was angry cat, how bad could they be?"

"Plants are not cats," Paris told him.

"This one is!" Okuyasu said, practically beaming. "He was being used by a bad guy for a bit but now he's pretty cool if you make sure he gets sun and you don't try to take his toys away. My dad takes care of him!"

He was totally proud of his dad taking care of a plant.

He finished the boots and started trimming up a shirt for the tube dress. "A lot happens in my home town despite it being pretty small."

"Is one of those things a huge meth lab?" Paris asked dryly, holding up her sweater-y thing in roughly the direction of the gremlins.

It wouldn't do for it to be tight in the shoulders.

Okuyasu paused. "No, don't think so. Not really drugs in Morioh, which is good, because that means there'd be bad crime."

He then thought of the best way to describe it.

"We just had to deal with arrows that gave people superpowers," he said, glossing over the part where he was in many ways responsible for some of those problems.

"Uh huh," Paris said in her best "I am clearly humoring you" voice.

And for his part, Okuyasu took that at face value. He wasn't a man who picked up on subtleties. Or often times, things right in front of his face.

He started 'sewing' up the sides of the trimmed shirt with yarn. It gave it a very... rough hewn clothes look. The puce shirt fabric didn't help matters.

"But listen to me yammering on," Okuyasu said. "I'm hardly letting you get in a word! Forgive me for talking so much about myself."

"It's fine," Paris said. "I'm not here to make friends. I'm here to win this competition. Last year we had a prize at the end--I guess this year's prize is not winning a giant, terrifying fish."

"...but we also don't get a giant terrifying fish if we don't win," Okuyasu said. "So no matter what, we're winners!"

Totally how that worked.

"No matter what, we don't get a fish," Paris said. "That doesn't make us winners, just...fishless."

She frowned at the dress. "Should we add fish to it?"

"We could put fish on it," Okuyasu said, looking down at the little dress. "Like a goldfish?"

Probably more of a mustardfish, given the materials available.

"Like a goldfish," Paris said, nodding. "Like a fish that a kindergartner can draw."

"Okay I know I said cats can be plants but I'm pretty sure you don't grow fish in a garden," Okuyasu said. "But I can cut out a fish, that's a thing I can do."

Paris was just going to chalk that comment up to all the drugs Okuyasu was clearly on.

"Good, do that. I'll finish the sweater and check on those boots."

Okuyasu was perfectly capable of cutting out a basic fish shape. He was, however, starting to get a little distracted by Paris’ take charge attitude.

“So... do you have a boyfriend?” he asked, king of subtlety.

Paris stared at him. "What? Why?"

Okuyasu let out a startled noise.

“Just making conversation?” he said, trying to sound casual.
