BWI Airport Portalocity Lounge, Saturday morning [05/04].

"What the ever-loving fuck is a Portalocity Lounge?"

Apparently, it was precisely the place where Wayne was standing, squared shoulders, thumbs in his belt loops, frowning up at the softest, most sparkliest banner he had ever seen...and he'd een to at least a baker's dozen of Dary's traditional soft birthday parties, so he knew a soft fucking banner when he saw one.

"That," he stated, to no one in particular, especially since he seemed to be the first one there (if you're not five minutes early, you're five minutes late, bud), "is fucking 10-ply."

But it was what it was. No going back now, ain't no reason to get excited, he supposed. Pitter-patter. So he turned his head sharply to one side of the lounge, eyed the chairs against the wall, and went to have a seat, one hand on his knee, tohe other around the smallest cup of coffee he could get, and settled in to wait.

The truth was, Billy might have been a lot more reluctant to come here, to spend a summer at camp so soon after he'd actually found himself a family, except that it had been a family effort to get him here. It was Victor and Rosa who had signed him up, but Mary was the one who had heard about it in the first place and talked them into it after Pedro and Eugene had done the research, Freddy had been very persuasive about how it was a good opportunity for a fledgling superhero to get in some training, and Darla had pointed out that it wasn't like it would be hard for him to come home for a visit, even if he just wanted to stop in for dinner.

He was looking up at the banner with a faint, bemused grin, and texting pictures of it and the lounge back to his siblings.

Wayne took note of the other boy taking the pictures, and would offer an amicable nod to him if he notcied, but he was mostly content in just sitting and waiting quietly, for the most part.

Billy happened to glance that way ~~now that I finally have a decent screen size to track multiple threads~~ in between a couple of those pictures (Freddy was disappointed that it looked so mundane for a place with interfreakingdimensional portals) and nodded back at him. "Are we all going to the same place?"

"I'd sure hope so," said Wayne, taking a moment to squint around the lounge, "otherwise I think someone's going to be for at least a few surprises. Fandom High, like the banner says. Sound about right?"

"Sounds about right," agreed Billy with a tiny smirk of amusement that he'd gone from Fawcett High to Fandom High, at least for the summer. "What, uh -- how come you ended up coming here?"

"Ohhh," said Wayne, that squinting look slipping off to the side a little, "my uncle Eddie thought it might be good for me to get ouwt fer a bit. Said it builds...character."

That last bit was said in a way that made it clear he wasn't too convinced about that.

"What's your story, bud?"

Welllllll.

"My family thought I should get to have the summer camp experience since I never did before," Billy said slowly, "but I'm not sure this is going to be a summer camp the way they thought it would be, exactly?"

Wayne squinted, tilting his head with interest. "What makes you say that?"

It was already a little different, sure, considering he'd been sent off to a whole different country for it, but he really had no idea what he was going in for beyond 'summer camp,' and a little insight might not hurt if this guy had something more about the place than he had.

"I don't know." Billy shrugged. "It seems a lot more set up like a school than a camp, just with really weird classes? And the brochure I saw didn't say anything about campfires or making s'mores and stuff."

He paused and cleared his throat.

". . . It's kind of obvious I've never actually been to one, isn't it?"

Shuri gave him a friendly wave.

"Hi," Billy said, looking up from a text message from Freddy, something about an eBay auction for a piece of marble tile with a certificate of authenticity for how it had been broken by Wonder Woman during a thwarted bank robbery.

Shuri gestured at his phone. "Have you seen the video of the cat dressed as a shark riding a Roomba yet?"

Considering how many viral videos he was responsible for, you'd think Billy might be a little more savvy about these things, but no, he'd been a little busy letting Freddy do things like set him on fire on camera.

"No way," he said, snickering. "Really? I must've missed that one somehow."

Shuri pulled out her own, super shiny, phone, and pulled up the video. "I sent it to my brother," she said. "He loves cats."

Billy got about twenty seconds into the video before he was really laughing.

"Can you send it to me? My little sister's going to love that. She just loves animals in general."

'What's your number?" Shuri asked, pulling up her contacts list. "And your name, too, I suppose, if you don't want to be Shark Cat Boy."

Look, 'Shark Cat Boy' was still an improvement over 'Thundercrack.'

"Sorry," Billy said after rattling off his number for her. "Billy Batson. But if you feel like Shark Cat Boy is catchier . . ."

Okuyasu looked over at the younger kid and paused for a second.

"...what are you holding?" he asked, because he was woefully out of his element when it came to technology that was, admittedly, 20 years from his future.

"What, this? It's just my phone," Billy replied, both eyebrows going up in confusion. Eugene had said something about the place he was going to being some kind of interdimensional nexus, but he hadn't quite processed everything that term would entail.

"Wow, must have a pretty wealthy family to have a cell phone," Okuyasu said. Clearly he'd need to buddy up with the rich kid. "You can't even really get reception for those in my hometown."

Billy just snorted with laughter at that description. Victor and Rosa were awesome, but wealthy? Not even close.

"They're pretty common where I'm from," he said, and remembered something he'd heard -- maybe it was in class, maybe Mary had said it at dinner once, he wasn't sure -- about how cell phones used to be much less affordable for ordinary people years ago. "Or . . . when, I guess. That's going to have to be a thing I'll have to remember now, huh?"

Okuyasu blinked and stared at that last comment.

"Eh?" he said, making a confused noise. "What do you mean, when you're from?"

"What year is it where you're from?" Billy asked. "It's 2019 here, same as it is for me at home."

"It's 1999," Okuyasu said, eyeing Billy suspiciously. "It's not really the future, is it? That seems like a weird joke to make."

"Dude, 1999 is way in the past, for me," Billy replied. "I'm years from even being born yet!"

That was kind of blowing his mind a little bit.
