BWI Airport Portalocity Lounge, Saturday morning [05/04].

"What the ever-loving fuck is a Portalocity Lounge?"

Apparently, it was precisely the place where Wayne was standing, squared shoulders, thumbs in his belt loops, frowning up at the softest, most sparkliest banner he had ever seen...and he'd een to at least a baker's dozen of Dary's traditional soft birthday parties, so he knew a soft fucking banner when he saw one.

"That," he stated, to no one in particular, especially since he seemed to be the first one there (if you're not five minutes early, you're five minutes late, bud), "is fucking 10-ply."

But it was what it was. No going back now, ain't no reason to get excited, he supposed. Pitter-patter. So he turned his head sharply to one side of the lounge, eyed the chairs against the wall, and went to have a seat, one hand on his knee, tohe other around the smallest cup of coffee he could get, and settled in to wait.

Wait with Wayne while wondering what wayward world awaits, waging war with wiser words.

Trusting the transportation and the teachers to be tried and true for travel and toting tenacious teenagers toward tumultuous training

Occasionally, overly odious and obscure overtures outdo an overall opus to oblivion.

"He said fuck, does that mean I can say fuck?" Delirium asked Barnabas.

Barnabas' eyes widened and he tried to answer quickly, "No.."

Too late.

"Fuck fuck FUCK fuuuuck fucccckkk fuck fuck fuck sounds like duck but isn't duck it's fuck, fuck fuck fuuuuuck, not a truck and has no pluck, fuck fuck fuccccccky fuck fuck fuck!" she sang cheerfully.

Barnabas sighed.

"Everyone heading to Fandom!" Anakin called from the doorway. "Bus is leaving in ten minutes! Move it!"

Just your normal, everyday pick-up for school from a guy dressed in black leather and a dark brown floor length robe. Noting to see here!

Delirium peered up - way up- at Anakin. She smiled. "Your dress is very nice!" she chirped, "All browny and flowy and long and I bet it swishes really really good! Do you ever do spins to make it swoosh out like a wave only if earth could do a wave and not just water?"

Barnabas wished his forelegs were hinged correctly to facepaw.

Shuri had a large, colorful bag slung over her shoulder, a small bracelet of kimoyo beads on her left wrist and a woman who was watching her from a cafe a careful distance away.

"This is for Fandom?" she asked, checking the sign. Her eyes lit up at Wayne's coffee cup. "Oooh, is that Starbucks? I've always wanted to try Starbucks."

Anakin had been doing this a long time. If he didn't get at least one bathrobe reference when he picked up the new kids, it meant he had a bus load of people from the galaxy far, far away, and that was generally a bad sign.

"It's a robe. Dresses aren't open up the front like this," he said. "I'm Anakin Skywalker, the dean of students." He glanced down at his clipboard. "You seem like a...Delirium."

"But do you?" she asked, since that was an explanation but not an answer to the question.

Barnabas answered for her, "This is the Lady Delirium, yes." He nudged her leg. "She's pleased to meet you, Dean Skywalker."

"I am," Del confirmed absently, "But do you?"

"I do not twirl around in my robe," Anakin said dryly, "but my daughter does."

"That is so nice of you to let her use your robe to do all the twirling in!" Del chirped, quite pleased by this. What a nice man! She did an example twirl but jeans and a denim jacket do not lend themselves quite so well to twirly swooshes. She stopped and wobbled a little. "Oh. That only swooshed inside my head. Bad example."

Barnabas made a silent plea for patience.

Anakin smiled. "Juliet doesn't exactly ask," he said.

The truth was, Billy might have been a lot more reluctant to come here, to spend a summer at camp so soon after he'd actually found himself a family, except that it had been a family effort to get him here. It was Victor and Rosa who had signed him up, but Mary was the one who had heard about it in the first place and talked them into it after Pedro and Eugene had done the research, Freddy had been very persuasive about how it was a good opportunity for a fledgling superhero to get in some training, and Darla had pointed out that it wasn't like it would be hard for him to come home for a visit, even if he just wanted to stop in for dinner.

He was looking up at the banner with a faint, bemused grin, and texting pictures of it and the lounge back to his siblings.

Wayne was of the opinion that anyone who wanted to could say fuck, but he might have been disposed to inform this girl that she might want to take about 10, 20 percent off there.

But there was a dog, and no amount of excitedly dropped F-bombs could distract him from that.

He also thought for a second that maybe the dog had said 'no,' but that was just silly. Dogs couldn't talk.

"Didn't know we could bring dogs," he noted, sounding maybe a little petulant about it, but making himself feel better by pointing out that the dogs were much happier back home on the farm. He tilted his head at Barnabas for a moment before clicking his tongue a little, patting his knee to see if that good bo wanted to come over and say hi.

But not actually say hi, because dogs couldn't talk.

"It's no Tim Hortons," said Wayne, because Canadian, "but it'll do." He lifted his chin a little, cocking his head in the general direction of the concourse in the station where he'd gotten it. "Just down that waaay's a bit, if you can be quick about it before the bus gets here, but it's not likeleh. Line's about longer than a hawkey player's treasure trail."

He would have added a disparaging fuck at the end of that, but he was talking to a girl, and it was impolite to swear too much in front of girls you didn't yet know.

It would be totally understandable for Billy to do a double take when he spotted Anakin, considering Anakin's aesthetic was a little bit reminiscent of Dr. Sivana's, right? Just for a second though, and then he was shouldering his bag and boarding the bus. He was pretty sure Eugene or Pedro would have mentioned something if there was an actual risk of him going to supervillain school by accident.

"I'm a service dog," Barnabas said wryly, "I provide a very valuable service." That tongue-click and knee pat got the canine version of a haughty look. "I'm Barnabas," he said, "Pleased to meet you."

Delirium looked between the two of them, confusion evident. "I didn't bring Barnabas," she explained, "Barnabas brought me so really it's not bringing a dog but a dog bringing a girl and that's ok because it's a school for people. Did you want to pet him? Is that what.." She clicked her tongue and patted her knee, "means in whatever language it is where you came from? You can just ask him. Barnabas likes pats and scritches.."

"Delirium," Barnabas sighed.

"What?" she asked, "You do. Your tongue gets all pantsy and you sometimes do the leg flobber thing.." she stomped her foot several times in a row to indicate it, "but that just means it's a good itchy spot that you wanted scritched but didn't know it until just that very minute and for a communication doggo sometimes you're not so good at knowing your own communication things and that's why I'm asking the boy right there whether he's trying to communicate with you in his own language."

To Wayne, she said, "Barnabas speaks English, mostly."

Wayne took note of the other boy taking the pictures, and would offer an amicable nod to him if he notcied, but he was mostly content in just sitting and waiting quietly, for the most part.

"Does she sort of ask?" Delirium asked curiously, "Maybe she thinks her asks exactly but sometimes they come out only sort of asks or not at all asks but she meant to ask?"

Karolina was worried about Beau, and about some of the students and how this past week had affected them. But new kids were coming in today, and they hadn't yet been traumatised by vampires. And also she didn't want to crowd Beau with her fussing. So. Here she was!

And since Anakin was taking care of the more order-y bellowing, Karolina could instead beam and call out, "Come get your welcome packets!"

Because yes, she had paper bags for each of the students. Inside, they'd find a map of the island, a chocolate bar (Fair Trade, of course), and a $5 gift card to the Perk. And also a little card that said Karolina, Fandom High guidance counselor along with her contact info.

Also, it might've looked like the summery pastels of her outfit were a deliberate counterpoint to what Anakin was wearing. But, nah, that was just how she dressed.

"...You're not 'exposed to give dogs human names," said Wayne, after a very, very long time and a suspicious look down into his coffee cup with a furrowed brow, because that was a lot to process right now, what with the talking dog and everything. Then he looked back up, still frowning deeply, and blinking maybe a few times. "But maybe there's an exception for talking dogs. Fuck. I don't know."

Then he looked away, off to the side, frowning even still as he tried to sort out this sort of new territory. Because of course he wanted to pet the dog. All he could think about was how he wanted to pet that dog. Scratch his ears. Maybe rub his belly. But it felt a bit awkward, didn't it, knowing that dog could talk, and here you'd just met him and was already thinking about how all you wanted to do was rub his belly.

Processing this a little more, he turned back toward the girl. "Does he shake--" he started, then stopped, because the dog apparently could answer the question himself, and turned his attention now toward Barnabas and tried again.

"Do you shake hands?" he asked.

Seemed only polite to shake a talking dog's hand before you went and rubbed his belly, at any rate.

"Oh, I didn't name him," Delirium asserted, "I'd have given him a much more interesting name. Barnabas suits him, don't you think? He has a very 'Barnabas' look about him."

"Thank god," Barnabas muttered under his breath.

"All dogs talk," Delirium informed the boy, "just not all of them speak English so good as Barnabas does."

Barnabas gave Del a fond but long-suffering look before turning his attention to the boy. He raised a paw for a shake, "I'm Barnabas and this is my charge, the Lady Delirium."

Delirium skipped over to pick up her welcome packet. She opened it right then and there because presents were the best ever, ok?? She took a bite of the chocolate bar, then curiously took a bite of the map and the gift card and the business card. Those were less tasty but she read the business card anyway.

"Oh!" she gasped in delight, "You're like Barnabas! Barnabas! This is a guidance counselor!"

"I am not," Barnabas said with dignity, "a guide dog. I am a service dog."

"You provide guidance sometimes," Delirium said, "When I'm all lost and need help finding my way to a somewhere from a nowhere. This is a counselor who does that so this is a person type of Barnabas."

Karolina almost pointed out only the chocolate was really meant for biting into, but then decided not to. It could've been a cultural thing and she didn't want to be rude - and anyway, as far as ways of interacting with the world went, it wasn't the worst she'd seen.

The talking dog didn't seem to faze her much. Chalk that up to her lengthy history with Fandom. "I suppose so," she agreed with only a touch of hesitation. She offered Barnabas a nod of greeting. "Hello, Barnabas." Then, to Delirium, "And hello and welcome to Fandom to you too! And you are ...?"

She'd looked at the list Anakin had, sure, and so she had a guess. But she always felt weird about going places and having people know her name in advance, so she didn't really want to do that to others.

"Hello," Barnabas said in a stately, dignified voice, "This is the Lady Delirium."

"Right now I'm a girl person," Delirium said after she'd thought quite seriously about the question, "and a student. Or I will be a student once we're at the school so right now I'm kind of Schroedinger's Student where I am but I'm not but I probably will be soon." More thinking. "Am I still a student when I'm butterflies? Sometimes I like to be butterflies. Today might be a butterfly day. I'm feeling a little fluttery inside."
