Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Despite the not-so-great weather earlier in the week, the weather today looked nice and... well, decent for the end of December, and while the rest of town might still have signs of last week's snow, there were no traces left outside the school. (It just meant one less uncomfortable question for the big siblings to deal with, you're welcome.)

The buffet table was ready, set as far as possible from the glittered-out blue and gold tables and chairs. The winter bonfire was crackling for warmth and food-toasting opportunities. The lists of siblings and roommates had been double-checked. It looked like everything was ready for a picnic!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

New big sibling, huh? And here Mae had been single childing it up all these years, like a sucker.

She found her name tag, and in a fit of meaningless teen rebellion, stuck it in her back pocket instead of putting it on. If people wanted to know her name they'd have to ask!

So there.

Sidon took his duties as a Big Sibling very seriously, and was, of course, incredibly thrilled to locate and meet his newest friend at the picnic. So excited, in fact, that he found himself not even bothering something like looking at nametags when he felt so certain about the fact that he had already spotted his new sibling straight away.

"Pardon the interruption," said the very large, very red, very grinning shark-person all but bouncing up to Mae, "but you wouldn't happen to be Kat Stratford, would you?"

IT WAS AN HONEST AND VERY REASONABLE MISTAKE TO MAKE, OKAY?

"Oh my god." Mae stared up (and up and up and up) at Sidon. "Are you one of the sharks Sparklebus kept in his cargo hold?"

They were just communicating real well over here.

And while Sidon was very used to the staring up (and up and up and, yes, sometimes even up), he couldn't quite say that he'd been expecting a question like that, and his head tilted a little. "I wasn't aware that Sparkle kept sharks in his cargo hold," he admitted, particularly baffled because he didn't know Sparkle even had a cargo hold, but, then again, he didn't really know Sparkle except that he had excellent ideas when it came to helping a person who wore hardly anything pick out clothes for his future-girlfriend. "But, no, I am not one of them. As a matter of fact, I am not a shark at all, but actually a Zora! I am Sidon!" Please, like he'd pass up the chance to give the good-old fist-pump, sparkly-smile bit. "The Zora Prince!"

Look, he was just coming off of a trip home, which sort of sparked back some of the boisterous pride that being at Fandom had tampered down a little, and he was taking full advantage of it.

Wow, okay then.

"Hi Sidon the Zora Prince. I am Mae! The Mayor of Possum Springs!"

You know, while they were putting on airs and all.

"Oh, how wonderful!" said Sidon brightly. "I've yet to meet a mayor before! It is a pleasure to meet you, Mayor Mae, though I now realize I have stumbled into quite an embarrassing gaffe, as I was looking for my new sibling; their name is Kat Statford, though, not Mae, so I can only assume that you are, indeed, not them. No matter, though! It is a day for meeting new people, is it not? Tell me more about your Possum Springs! It sounds magnificent!"

And he meant it, too! Anything having to do with water was a fine name, if you asked him.

"It's a tiny little town in the mountains," Mae said. "It was a mining town and then a factory town but it's kind of . . . between industries right now."

Unless you counted meth labs.

No one counted the meth labs.

Sidon didn't even know what a meth lab was!

"Splendid!" he said. "My home is nestled in the mountains, as well; I sometimes miss them terribly while I'm here, but Fandom Island is not without its own charms, I assure you. Are you coming here of your own volition, Mae, or do you find yourself here under less...agreeable circumstances?"

"Well, it was come here or stay home and deal with everyone looking at me funny. Which one does that count as?"

Sidon took a moment to consider that one, very carefully.

"It would be my own personal estimation," he offered, "that the situation you described so succinctly falls into the category of your own volition, with a caveat for being entirely influenced by particularly leading factors. There are those who are here without the option of staying home as an alternative, so that was mainly where my concerns were from. Though, I regret to inform you, Mae, that coming here might not entirely stave off people looking at you funny, especially if you were to venture out into the mainland. Here, on the island itself, though, most people are far more open-minded."

He liked to think he knew a thing or two about people looking at him funny, after all.

"Why would people look at me funny on the mainland? I'm pretty sure rumors don't travel that far."

She'd been charged as a juvenile, after all. And sent to therapy instead of a correctional facility!

"They are, ahhhh..." Sidon tried to think of the most polite way to put a matter such as this, especially since he knew others were bothered by it far more than he ever was. "Ah. On the mainland exists a society where the appearance of most people is far more...homogeneous. They are not quite so accustomed to individuals with what they have, unfortunately, come to see as odd...fins and headtails," giving his own a small little flick behind him, "for example, or," and he gestured toward Mae herself, "more feline features such as your own. Even their variety in the color of skin is limited to a very small spectrum of options."

Mae supposed to a giant shark, all mammals looked alike.

"I thought people in cities were supposed to be less racist, not more."

Guess who had no problem asking!

"You wouldn't happen to be Mae, would you?" Sabine checked.

There were a limited number of new kids, that made it easier.

"Maaaaybe," Mae said. Which was as good as a yes, really, since if she wasn't, then usually the answer would be 'no'. "Why are you asking?"

"I'm Sabine. So iiif you're Mae, I'd be your big sibling here," she answered.

"Does that mean I get to borrow your clothes without asking and rat you out to Mom and Dad?"

What Mae knew about siblings, she had learned from television. Or her Dad and his sister.

Mostly television.

"That won't be a thing that happens," Sabine told her. "Especially since I don't know who Mom and Dad would be here."

Zoe and Anakin?

"Welcome to Fandom, it's insane, you get used to it."

Maybe Mae knew that already? Sabine was talking to a cat person, she didn't know what was weird for her yet.

"If I don't have to see a therapist about it, I'm good with insanity." She wasn't, actually. Insanity sucked. "So . . . what's the purpose of the big sister thing, then?"

"This place takes some getting used to, so you have someone to explain the place, and to answer any questions you have. Just help you get acclimated," Sabine told her. "Do you have any questions so far?"

Dozens.

"Is it true there's a whole class about field trips?"

Very few of them were probably the questions that big sibs expected.

"That is true," Sabine said, and it still weirded her out. "If you're looking for further education after this, the classes... might not help a ton."

"I'm supposed to be the first Borowski to go to college," Mae said. "But I'm okay with slacking off for a little while."

Mae would love to slack off forever.

"I'm sure there are ways to make sure you get in." After all, Paris was managing it here. "So where are you from, Mae?"

"Possum Springs? It's in the mountains. You've probably never heard of it."

She wasn't being a hipster. There was just no reason why someone in Maryland would have heard of it.
