Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Despite the not-so-great weather earlier in the week, the weather today looked nice and... well, decent for the end of December, and while the rest of town might still have signs of last week's snow, there were no traces left outside the school. (It just meant one less uncomfortable question for the big siblings to deal with, you're welcome.)

The buffet table was ready, set as far as possible from the glittered-out blue and gold tables and chairs. The winter bonfire was crackling for warmth and food-toasting opportunities. The lists of siblings and roommates had been double-checked. It looked like everything was ready for a picnic!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Is it true there's a whole class about field trips?"

Very few of them were probably the questions that big sibs expected.

"That is true," Sabine said, and it still weirded her out. "If you're looking for further education after this, the classes... might not help a ton."

"I'm supposed to be the first Borowski to go to college," Mae said. "But I'm okay with slacking off for a little while."

Mae would love to slack off forever.

"I'm sure there are ways to make sure you get in." After all, Paris was managing it here. "So where are you from, Mae?"

"Possum Springs? It's in the mountains. You've probably never heard of it."

She wasn't being a hipster. There was just no reason why someone in Maryland would have heard of it.

"I haven't," she agreed. "Is that... this planet?"

Well, if not, hello to that part of the discussion.

"Earth, yeah," Mae said. "The big shark guy explained about how a bunch of people here are from space."

He seemed to think Mae might be, too, but there was no accounting for big shark guys.

"I am," Sabine nodded. "I haven't really gotten to see much of this planet or its people yet..."

She didn't want to ask why Mae was a cat from Earth, but she wanted to ask.

Mae shrugged. "Neither have I and I live here."

She knew Possum Springs really well. And her family had gone to Bright Harbor on vacation once. That was about it.

...She couldn't just ask. She couldn't be that person.

"Well, this place is probably different than what you're used to." Maybe? "Are you okay with things like people from space?"

"As long as they're not being dicks, I'm okay with pretty much anyone."

You know, when her head was screwed on straight, anyway.

"Okay, good. And you should probably know that sometimes some things happen here that might be out of the ordinary," Sabine continued. "Like, getting invaded by now monsters."

"Oh man," Mae said. "Those are the worst."

She had totally never encountered snow monsters before.

...Okay.

"They actually weren't so bad. Any experience with gremlins?"

"The bus driver mentioned those," Mae said. "I told him I was sad they weren't possums."

Well, sort of.

"That's probably a correct reaction, actually," Sabine admitted. "What else do you already know about?"

". . . There's no strip club?"

Of all the questions she'd expected, that was not one.

"No strip club. Maybe on the mainland...?"

"They probably wouldn't let me in anyway." Since she was about four and a half feet tall and, you know, 15 and all. "Oh! Does the island get cell reception?"

"We do! And internet, or I think half the island would start twitching."

She had nothing to base that on, actually, it just felt right.

"That's awesome! . . . Now I need to figure out how to afford a cellphone."

Possum Springs did not have any reception, so she'd never bothered to get one before.

"There are plenty of places in town where you can get jobs," Sabine told her. "Things here are almost freakishly affordable."

How else could people get apartments working one day a week?

Mae really didn't want a job.

"They seem to be pretty easy?" Sabine tried.

"Yeah, but you have to, like. Go to them. And do things. When people tell you to."

Mae was not good at those sorts of things.
