Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Despite the not-so-great weather earlier in the week, the weather today looked nice and... well, decent for the end of December, and while the rest of town might still have signs of last week's snow, there were no traces left outside the school. (It just meant one less uncomfortable question for the big siblings to deal with, you're welcome.)

The buffet table was ready, set as far as possible from the glittered-out blue and gold tables and chairs. The winter bonfire was crackling for warmth and food-toasting opportunities. The lists of siblings and roommates had been double-checked. It looked like everything was ready for a picnic!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Kanan had told her about the picnic. Free food was a thing not to be missed. She was curious about the other students and most especially about any that might've signed up for her class.

It had been a little bit of a surprise to Jack that anyone had. For once she's moderately dressed in untorn black jeans, a matching black t-shirt with 'LIFT LIKE A KROGAN' printed on it and the image of a Krogan throwing someone in the air with rays of white light. Most people here wouldn't get the joke and she didn't care at all. Cold enough that she had her leather jacket on but open and her feet strapped into knee-high nightmares of leather, buckles, and metal bits that pretended to be boots.

She looked, if anything, bored. She was trying for 'Hi I'm your teacher and totally open and approachable'. 'Bored' was about the closest she could manage. Jack looked at the kids milling about while she grazed the table and tried to pick out what she wanted to eat.

By the looks of it, if she was doing right by discerning the new kids from the new teachers, anyway, there was one of two people that were likely to be Jack, 50/50 chance, and Amaya rather liked those odds. Those tortured boots alone were enough for her to peg this one as her first attempt, though, as she couldn't help admiring the cobbler who threw those bad boys together.

Not enough spikes for her tastes, really, but still, some damn fine work there.

"New teacher, right?" she asked, before lifting a hand in a wave. "Amaya Blackstone, nice to meet you. Don't suppose you go by Jack, by any chance, do you?"

Jack looked the woman over while she approached. Couldn't figure what to make of her.

She gave an easy nod and tried her best to make that 'nice to meet you' into a thing that could be true. "About the only thing I ever do go by," she agreed, "Yeah, teacher. Civics."

Her jacket was covering the glittery white "JACK" she'd shut up totally didn't forget to written across the left side of her collarbone.

"You my teaching buddy?"

She even managed to say it without sarcasm.

Jack was really trying today.

"That's me," Amaya agreed easily with a nod. "I'm the one who's here to help show you the ropes if you need 'em shown, sort of help get you acquainted and settled in if need be."

She gave Jack a slightly thoughtful look-over then; definitely a departure from the last few she'd had, that was for sure.

"This may be an odd question," she added, "but you didn't happen to just recently wind up shipwrecked or washed up on shore somewhere nearby without any real strong idea of where you were or why, did you?"

It...was a thing.

Somehow.

Jack laughed and shook her head. "Nah, nothing like that. I been here before. Came to visit my brother for Parent's Weekend. I'm a teacher back home, bunch of over-powered too-hormonal teenagers who need to learn how to control their sh..stuff before they blow themselves or someone else up."

She loved every one of those kids. Fiercely.

"Sounds like that's what comes up through this school. My kind of speed so I took a sabbatical for a semester to come here, see what's what."

Keep an eye on Kaidan.

"What do you teach? I'm for Civics." If that's what you could call it.

"Currently?" Amaya said, then grinned, gave a small pump of a strong fist in the air. "Shop class! Though I've done weapons and construction before, too. I also run the forge in town, if you ever need any blacksmithing work done, though my operation tends to lean more toward the traditional sword-and-dagger type of things."

She felt Jack would definitely fall squarely into that nebulous category of technology and weapons the sort was still a little beyond her reach (though she was working on it), but, at the same time, she also looked like the sort of woman who'd appreciate a good axe from time to time, so she figured it wouldn't hurt to mention it.

"Who's your brother, if you don't mind me asking?"

Small island, so chances that she didn't know him were pretty slim to none, and that whole detail made her job a bit easier, anyway.

"Right on," Jack said with a small smile. "Good and practical. Give these kiddos a good grounding in how to fix their own sh..stuff.. when it breaks." She was more a gun girl herself when she used a weapon but she was also the sort who'd use anything as a weapon if she could get her hands on it. Particularly keen on knives. Had about six on her right now in places couldn't be seen unless you knew exactly what you were looking for.

She thew Amaya a slightly curious look. "Swords, yeah? How many people around here use 'em? I've seen the kind that light up but plasma's not exactly metal." Sort of was, sort of a burning metal or something that could just burn through metal. Ions and shit. She'd looked it up after the visit but the answers had given her a headache.

"Kaidan Alenko," came the answer about her brother, "He said he's learning sword now too and that is some sh..stuff.. I really gotta see. He's hell on wheels with a gun. Sword?"

She had doubts.

It was always nice to meet someone who understood the importance of good and practical, really, and Amaya grinned faintly, and hearing she ran around with Kaidan definitely helped confirm her thoughts about quite where to place Jack in a general sense.

"Boy, those glowy swords," they would always be glowy swords to her, "are something else, aren't they? We've got nothing like that back where I'm from, but, thankfully, there's plenty of people 'round here interested in cold, hard steel. I've had no lack of business over the months, even picked myself up an apprentice." Which was...more out of just liking the idea of it than necessity, but that wasn't the point. "I didn't know Kaidan'd picked it up, though; not surprising, really. He taking lessons with Kanan? Made him a small stockpile of practice blades not too long ago, it'd be good to know they're being put to good use."

"Kind of want one of the glowsticks," Jack admitted, "They look fun." Destruction was fun. Nobody should ever let her have a lightsaber. Ever. EVER.

"Eh, as.. Kaidan was using a bamboo sword the last time I saw him. Playing swords with Kanan, yeah. Closest thing we got to swords back home are monoblades. They're metal underneath but the edge ain't. Cuts through anything. Can't get 'em anymore. They're a whole lot of illegal." She wanted one of those, too.

Shot Amaya another look. "An actual forge, with like anvils and sh..stuff? Hammering away on metal?" Dark ages stuff, man. Jack was kind of impressed anyone did anything that way anymore.

Amaya's brain was very quick to supply reasons why the monoblades Jack described might be deemed a whole lot of illegal, and so now she wanted one, too.

But the pride for her work was a swiftly working mistress, and, beaming slightly, she nodded. "Actual forge," she confirmed, "with anvils and...stuff, hammering away on metal. Been doing it since I was about the age of most of these kids here, really, with some inventing and tinkering on the side here and there, too. Which mean I'll let you know if I ever get around to working up how to actually make one of those glowy swords, but I'm trying to focus a bit more on guns. More for my own sake than anything else; there's a shop already selling those here, and I'm not about to tread on territory that's beyond my ken, anyway. But it'd still be nice to know...y'know?"

"Yeah definitely keep me on the glowstick wait list," Jack encouraged. Because damn did she want one. hiss-snap Wheeeee!

She gave Amaya another curious look, "Guns, huh? Like, revolvers from this planet or, like, our guns from home?" Jack considered the whole forge and metal part of it. "Might be better with a revolver that shot slugs. Ours are mostly electrical."

Eezo powered. She wasn't going to try explaining that right now.

Smart move, considering...

"....I'm only just getting the hang of electricity," Amaya admitted with a shake of her head, "so I think it might be a while before I work my way up to electrical guns. It's a learning process, to be sure, but one I'm feeling pretty eager to tackle. I just keep getting distracted with other jobs, which, believe me, is not a problem I mind having, I can tell you that."

She whistled between her teeth. "Yeah? I can see where that'd be a problem working with more than revolvers. I didn't even know there were places people could come from that didn't have electricity. Never been on a nexus thing like this before."

She made a note and filed it away because that might be pertinent if she got a student who didn't know what the light switches were or something.

"I have been just madly dive-bombing new kids with bundles of winter gear," Sparkle informed Jack as he ambled up to her, "but I figured maybe I shouldn't just chuck one at the back of your head and run."

He was grinning. You better believe it. And... yes... holding out a bundle with a scarf, hat, and gloves in shades of black and deep red for her to take.

"Much rather say hi, anyway."

She looked in the direction of the ocean and grinned back at him, "I dunno, Sparkle, do your bad life choices often include a need to go swimming in this kind of weather?" He couldn't run fast enough. Not that she would punt him into the sea for something like throwing a hat at her head but she had a reputation almost nobody here even knew. Yet.

"Hey, thanks," she said when she took the bundle and looked at it. "It's even in my colors! How you been? And how is it that tall, dark, and oh too dam..ng..serious is the one covered in glitter and not you?"

"I've been... good, actually," so help Sparkle, he sounded faintly bewildered about that fact. "And I guess some people just have all the luck."

Yeah, Kanan was the lucky one, here.

"I was kind of hoping you were the Jack I already knew," he added, grinning. "Never can be too sure around this place. So you're..." He glanced around at where she'd parked herself. "... A new teacher?"

He might be bewildered but she was glad. Not like her to come out and say she worried even when she did. Bobbed her head at the answer and then let a particularly wicked smile pull her lips back from her teeth. "Civics," she confirmed, "and guess who still doesn't know yet."

"I was gonna land on him like a dropbear before the sun even rose today since that's when the masochistic a...guy.. likes to go running," she answered with a toss of her head, "but EDI said he was actually like, really asleep for once."

She didn't have the heart. She knew from long association how very little sleep that asshole ever got. It was also a really bad idea for even her to startle him out of sleep. Jack was reckless but she no longer could be said to have a deathwish.

"Guess he'll find up when he shows up to this thing. Won't that just be fun." It would be. "Probably won't piss himself." Thought about it. "Might faint. I printed up a syllabus just to show him it's real."

A scrounge in a pocket and she offered the paper to Sparkle. He, she thought, would appreciate it.

Sparkle took the paper with a little smirk, and started to read it over.

"Law versus social justice," he rattled off, "history of conflicts, amendments..." He whistled a little. "Underground railroad, huh? Civil disobedience, resisting..."

There was an absolute sense of approval creeping into his voice as he worked his way down the list.

"Ooh, I like this. Shit. Shit, I'm sorry I graduated, like, years ago."

He'd audit this class so fast, though.

Wouldn't let anyone else do that either. Be almost funny to see them try. She liked Sparkle.

"Ugh, stop being so cute. It's gross," Jack complained. Wasn't really a complaint. "I swear I'll pinch your dimpled little cheek and coo at you like someone's arthritic old grandma," she threatened.

She'd done some research when she'd gone home after PW. Enough to know the parallels between this world and the history in her own galaxy were creepy and similar. She knew the kids were going to need this type of class. Two more years at least before this particular nightmare reign was over.

He was stinkin' adorable. It was pretty sickening. She liked him anyway.

Tossed her head at the crowd. "How many of these f.. " siiiiiigh "..people do you know? Gimme a rundown. Anyone I should look out for?" Take that question any way you pleased. "Kanan I already know."
