Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Despite the not-so-great weather earlier in the week, the weather today looked nice and... well, decent for the end of December, and while the rest of town might still have signs of last week's snow, there were no traces left outside the school. (It just meant one less uncomfortable question for the big siblings to deal with, you're welcome.)

The buffet table was ready, set as far as possible from the glittered-out blue and gold tables and chairs. The winter bonfire was crackling for warmth and food-toasting opportunities. The lists of siblings and roommates had been double-checked. It looked like everything was ready for a picnic!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Oh my god, really?" See Sparkle. See Sparkle break into a wicked, delighted little cackle. "When do you figure he's gonna find out? And is he gonna piss himself when he does?"

Sorry, Kaidan. Sparkle liked you, but Mischief Asshole Solidarity was apparently a thing.

"I was gonna land on him like a dropbear before the sun even rose today since that's when the masochistic a...guy.. likes to go running," she answered with a toss of her head, "but EDI said he was actually like, really asleep for once."

She didn't have the heart. She knew from long association how very little sleep that asshole ever got. It was also a really bad idea for even her to startle him out of sleep. Jack was reckless but she no longer could be said to have a deathwish.

"Guess he'll find up when he shows up to this thing. Won't that just be fun." It would be. "Probably won't piss himself." Thought about it. "Might faint. I printed up a syllabus just to show him it's real."

A scrounge in a pocket and she offered the paper to Sparkle. He, she thought, would appreciate it.

Sparkle took the paper with a little smirk, and started to read it over.

"Law versus social justice," he rattled off, "history of conflicts, amendments..." He whistled a little. "Underground railroad, huh? Civil disobedience, resisting..."

There was an absolute sense of approval creeping into his voice as he worked his way down the list.

"Ooh, I like this. Shit. Shit, I'm sorry I graduated, like, years ago."

He'd audit this class so fast, though.

"Since when do you follow other people's rules?" Jack asked him with a shrug, "Show up anyway. I won't kick you out."

Wouldn't let anyone else do that either. Be almost funny to see them try. She liked Sparkle.

"Yesssssss." See Sparkle. See Sparkle give a pleased little bounce on his toes. "This looks like exactly the sort of class I should've had a few years back. Knowing the students here now? Yeah, it'll be appreciated."

They would spread so much mayhem across the multiverse and it would be great.

"Ugh, stop being so cute. It's gross," Jack complained. Wasn't really a complaint. "I swear I'll pinch your dimpled little cheek and coo at you like someone's arthritic old grandma," she threatened.

She'd done some research when she'd gone home after PW. Enough to know the parallels between this world and the history in her own galaxy were creepy and similar. She knew the kids were going to need this type of class. Two more years at least before this particular nightmare reign was over.

"Gotta be cute," Sparkle informed her loftily, "it's how I'm made."

Couldn't be badass, had to be stinkin' adorable. Sorry not sorry, Jack.

There came her hand making exaggerated pinchy motions right toward your cheek, Sparkle.

He was stinkin' adorable. It was pretty sickening. She liked him anyway.

Tossed her head at the crowd. "How many of these f.. " siiiiiigh "..people do you know? Gimme a rundown. Anyone I should look out for?" Take that question any way you pleased. "Kanan I already know."

Sparkle just smirked a little at that censorship, there. Aw, Jack. You were so much better a role model than he was.

He looked out toward the people gathered so far, considering.

"The blonde in the cute teddy bear hat, that's Karolina. School counsellor, I think. She was a student the same time I was, is good people, genuinely wants what's good for the kids. Guy on fire is Jono Starsmore, another one of those 'good role model' types, I guess. Runs the music shop, married to," he jerked his chin toward Hannibal. "Hannibal Lecter. Psychologist, usually teaches food classes. Really into encouraging kids to grow up to be their best selves."

Kind of his adopted father figure. Ate people. It was complicated.

"Summer, cute redhead there, runs Turtle & Canary, I don't know much about her, but she likes parties, I think. Detective Diaz. She's a cop..." Jeeze, he didn't know most of the rest of them.

Jack's response to all that wholesome and goodness was a deep retching noise in the back of her throat. "I have questions for fireman," she noted and would be heading in that direction eventually.

"The he..heck's a Turtle & Canary? Pet store?"

The cop got a look. She got sized up right down to her feet immediately when Sparkle identified her.

"General store," Sparkle replied. "Pet store's the Furnado, it's actually a shelter. If any of your babies ever end up living on the island, that's where you'd go to get stuff to spoil 'em rotten with."

Baaabieeeees.

She cut him a glance. "It's adorable how you think I'd need to buy food or toys for a varren. I suppose I would need to eventually. Once they depopulated the wildlife on the island."

Which was why Eezo was home playing monster for all of Wrex's little shits.

She loved them too.

"Nice it's a shelter, though." Because it was.

... Sparkle was now picturing the varren all fucked up on gremlin venom. He was biting back a little smirk at the mental image, yes.

"It is, yeah," Sparkle agreed. "I only stop in there sometimes, it isn't like my fish burns through mealworms so fast I hvae to restock on the regular. But it seems like an okay place."

They were probably immune. Varren could eat radioactive waste without making a geiger counter hiccup when they burped after.

She eyed him, "Your self control's that good, huh?" Stop in for mealworms and not come home with every animal that made sad eyes at him. Good for you, Sparks.

"Atton's not big on having animals around," Sparkle clarified, shrugging.

Otherwise, oh god, he'd have like fifteen cats.

She mulled it over. "Fair," she admitted a moment later, "Animals don't like sharing their territory after all. Last thing you want is him peeing all over the house out of jealousy."

He didn't like animals, he was getting downgraded from 'Kaidan's hot playdate' to 'the hell Atton you monster'.

Sorry, Atton. Sparkle would never take your side on this one point. Not after the way you'd carried on about his cat, back when he still had one.

"Yeah, there aren't enough rolled-up newspapers in the world," Sparkle replied, grinning.

She imagined his hair flipping and startled grumpy-cat expression if Sparkle did manage to smack him on the nose with a paper and laughed.

Mostly because she could see Sparkle trying.

Jack could sit here all day trading cheerful snides about a guy she'd met all of once and who'd been nothing but polite at the time, but she was feeling kind of mellow at the moment.

Fuck knew why.

"Shirt fit ok?" she asked as a complete change of subject.

"Shirt fits great," Sparkle replied, his grin getting a little brighter. "The whole thing fit great, actually, I save it," save them, really, because who else would have gotten him that second outfit in the exact same size except for Kaidan, Jack, or both? "for, like, special occasions or whenever I just feel like I want people to think I'm gonna fuck some shit up."

"Good. Wasn't sure it would, your shoulders are a little bigger than mine even with the boobage included."

She was pleased he liked it. It shouldn't have meant anything and yet.

"Ah, you settled the question then," she teased him, "I wondered if it was yelling 'don't fuck with me' or just 'fuck me'. Kaidan thought both when I asked." The other one was for pretty. That was from the big dumb squish. Hers? Hers had a purpose.

She realized what she'd just said - twice, and grumbled. Digging out two single-credit chits from one pocket she moved them to the other and pulled just the mother of all cranky faces.

Sparkle, meanwhile, just kind of grinned a bit.

"Both," he agreed. "Both, depending on the day."

And it had worked out great for him on Boxing Day. So...

"Trying to watch your mouth around the impressionable littles?"

"Good for you," she approved, giving herself a small congratulatory mental backpat for picking that one out.

Take that, Kaidan. You and your squishy pretty shit.

"Yeah," she admitted with a scowl, "Kahlee got me doin' it some time back and now it's just sort of habit."

"Not a bad habit," Sparkle decided, though he couldn't quite bite back a smirk. "I mean, I'm pretty sure most of these students already know those words and use 'em themselves on the regular, but there's really no telling what the new batch is like."

Some of them might be wilting flowers or something.

"It's not so much for them as an exercise for me," Jack grumbled. "She's not wrong, Kahlee. I don't even hear it anymore."

It made it too easy to say some pretty horrible, hurtful things when you didn't listen to the words coming out of your mouth. She was trying to do better. Had been doing better. It had been weeks since she'd verbally lashed out at someone. It was sort of a new record for her.

Sparkle considered that for a few moments. And then nodded a little.

"I think I get that, yeah."

He'd gotten much better about his tendency to break into horrible, elaborate lies every time a topic got a little too close to home, himself. Granted, horrifying people with the truth of things sometimes wasn't much better.
