Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Despite the not-so-great weather earlier in the week, the weather today looked nice and... well, decent for the end of December, and while the rest of town might still have signs of last week's snow, there were no traces left outside the school. (It just meant one less uncomfortable question for the big siblings to deal with, you're welcome.)

The buffet table was ready, set as far as possible from the glittered-out blue and gold tables and chairs. The winter bonfire was crackling for warmth and food-toasting opportunities. The lists of siblings and roommates had been double-checked. It looked like everything was ready for a picnic!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Well, wasn't this just novel?

"Ohmygod," said Summer, to no one in particular...to the universe, probably, sure, why not, "I officially get to stand here being a weird teacher just standing here because that's what the weird teachers at this school do at these picnics."

And she was delighted. She shouldn't be. But she so totally was.

"Excited, huh?" Hey, Summer. Kanan couldn't help but lean over and grin at that delighted air that was kind of difficult to miss. "Get to be all responsible for impressionable young minds and all that?"

Summer still had an impressionable young mind! It was weird! And awesome!

"Hey, there, co-teacher." Every bit of her youthful exuberance was in full form today, no matter how much she'd want to be the Responsible Adult. She'd have a full semester ahead of her of Responsible Adult. Today, she was just going to be thrilled about new chapters and steps forward and shit.

She shook her head a little. "And this is where I say something like, 'man, they'll let anyone teach at this school, huh?' but we all know that's true, and putting me on the payroll's actually a step up from some of the current faculty. Present company included."

She gave him her brightest, sweetest, most innocent smile, then blinked, feigning surprise.

"Oh, hey," she said, tilting her head, gesturing with a finger toward his ear, "it looks like you've got a little...is that...glitter already? Or...actually, it looks...like a sequin?"

What in the wooorld could that be doing there??

Kanan smiled and rolled his eyes, and then reached for one of the half a million karking balloons he'd brought here from the shuttle after he'd cleared out the seat covers.

There might have been a small puff of glitter from his sleeve as he did so.

"Both," he intoned. "It's definitely both. I can't imagine where the two biggest thorns in my side managed to get so many sequin seat covers on such short notice, though."

Honest. For true.

He passed Summer the balloon.

"Don't suppose you have any idea?"

And Summer, whose face may have twitched particularly around the corner of her mouth and she shrugged in an effort to turn that twitch into a just blithely amused smile, just shook her head a little as she took the balloon. She eyed it speculatively. "No idea," she said, "but their wealth of resources must be incredible, really. Like, whatever it is, must be really impressive."

And, again, that oh-so-innocent blink as her attention shifted from balloon to bus driver. "Why?" she asked. "What did they do this time?"

Kanan's reply, now that his hand was free, was to just snort, pull out his phone, and then pull up the photo he'd taken of the bus.

Because, you know, for somebody who was clearly completely innocent, Kanan had a sneaking suspicion that Summer would appreciate getting to witness the mayhem.

And for someone who was clearly completely innocent, leaning in for a better look at how this whole nefarious plot finally played out, Summer felt a strange well of pride as if she'd been more involved in it than just a supportive enabler, and the impressed lift of her eyebrows and the reaction that went with it was actually fairly genuine. She knew the parts, sure, but she didn't know exactly how they were going to be put together.

"Wooooooooooow," she said, and didn't even bother to hide her approval, "it looks like a strip club in there."

Because how could she not stick with the theme, really.

"Yeah, there are at least a few students wondering what I use that bus for when I'm not picking up new kids," Kanan informed her, eyebrows raised. "I've probably had worse first impressions, but that one is definitely near the top of the list."

And now he was not just BDG, and Mean Bus Driver Guy, but also Sparklebus. Clearly this morning had gone well.

He could collect all the weird little nicknames from snarky little students all he wanted, none of them would ever reach BDG level. Hers was the first, dammit.

Though she would have to admit, Sparklebus was pretty great, too.

"Well," she offered, reasonably, "there's no denying that it probably helped do the job of getting at least some of the what-the-fuck out of their systems before getting here. That's always helpful."

"And anything I can do to help," Kanan replied, shaking his head a little. Smiling. Just a bit. "Presumably that's what our class is going to be for, though."

"Truuuuuuue," Summer agreed, "but the more they get out of their system today, the easier our jobs will be when start really dropping the big bombs on them.

"I'm really excited, by the way," she added, a faintly gushing afterthought that was only just confirming what was incredibly obvious. "I think it's going to be really great and cool, working with each other on this one."

"Might even make up for how you never once managed to take one of my classes before," Kanan teased, smirking. "Then again, maybe it's better this way. I prefer having you at the front of the room as an equal, anyway."

Having even some nominal measure of... what... rank? Over her? Teacher-to-student? That would've been weird.

"Saaaaame," Summer agreed. "That would have been....weird. But, also, don't blame me that all your previous classes available to me just sucked. That, and the fact that I only really had three chances to take one of your classes, and the first time around, I didn't even get to pick, my classes were being picked out for me by some anonymous alien office drone trying to make sure I don't cause too much trouble, remember? And your classes don't usually scream Nice Safe Anti-Rebellion Option.

"Oh!" she added as she thought back and remembered. "And the second time around, I didn't get to pick, either, because Grampa Rick picked those because I was running around in that Apocalypse World and replaced temporarily by a robot! So that means I really only had one semester where I could have picked your class, but by then, we were good enough friends that it really would have been weird at that point. What were you even teaching that semester? Do you remember, or does it all just blur together? That would have been spring 2018, before I graduated."

"Uh," Kanan said, squinting and leaning his head back and thinking. "I know I took one semester off, and you gave me hell for that," he replied. "I'm pretty sure that was the one."

It was. It was absolutely the one.

"I take one semester off, and of course it's the one where you finally had the opportunity to take my class, too."

"Looking forward to being weird?" Hannibal asked, smiling.

"Well, I mean," said Summer with a laugh, "I've always been kinda weird, but now I'm weird with, like...this..." Her hands danced in the air a little as if rummaging for the right words, "vague sense of presumed authority wrapped around it."

Yeah, that worked. She beamed a little at him. "I kinda dig it."

Hannibal chuckled. "Welcome to teaching. You will have the ability to influence any number of young minds."

"Well, again," Summer pointed out with another laugh, "I like to think I already did that, too." She was prom queen and the premiere party planner in her short stint as a student here, after all. "But again, now it's all...official and I get paid to do it, too."

And she was just a glowing ball of dumb excitement for it.

"What've you got in store for you students this time around, Dr. Lecter?"

"Field trips," Hannibal answered. "It was meant to be another class in artistic inspiration, but apparently the moose was having none of that, so it's simply field trips. And you?"

"I would sign up for that class in a second," Summer nodded her approval, and then the excitement clearly took over again. "And I'm doing a class on Culture Shock with Kanan! We were both thinking about classes that focused on preparing students for all sorts of weird stuff that might be thrown at them out here at Fandom or in the multiverse as a whole, so it just made sense to sort of join forces and do it together. He's got the perspective of his age and experience," because he was so old, Dr. L., so old, "and I've got the unique perspective of still being a teenager who's also experienced an Earth that's arguably even weirder than this place. So I think it'll be really helpful and useful, but also kind of fun, you know?"

"Useful and interesting," Hannibal agreed. "I wish you well with it."

You and your old, old partner.

SO OLD.

"Thank you," said Summer, straightening importantly and nodding her head. "I just hope I'm able to stick with it better than my community center class, but I think I will. If anything, Kanan'll keep me to task, and the subject matter is a little more..."

Hmmmm, how to describe exactly what as drag it was trying to force technology on people who were mostly just baffled by it and whose eyes went glossy at the mere mention of an emoji?

"....accessible."

Plus, you know, the whole point BDG had made about the fact that the audience was a bit more captive, as well.

"Accessibility is important," Hannibal agreed.

A captive audience didn't hurt.

"How are you enjoying the island, now you're no longer in school?" he asked. "And how is are the gelatin creations coming?"

"It's a bit weird," Summer said after a moment, with a faint, almost-wry smile, "if I'm honest. I think I should stayed away for a little bit longer, really, but, ugh, no. I couldn't stand being back home." She shrugged. "It is what it is, I guess. And I probably won't be here much longer, either, really, because the gelatin creations are coming along great; I'm really narrowing in on a business plan, so, depending on how this class goes, after this, it might be time." She hitched a thumb upwards toward the sky, making a rocket sound. "Up in space I go..."

By herself.

In a different galaxy.

Probably to a place where BDG couldn't even visit because it made the most economic, least-suspicious sense.

Yaaaay?

"Should you need any help, I would be happy to assist," Hannibal said. "As a cook, a business owner, or a friendly shoulder."
