Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Despite the not-so-great weather earlier in the week, the weather today looked nice and... well, decent for the end of December, and while the rest of town might still have signs of last week's snow, there were no traces left outside the school. (It just meant one less uncomfortable question for the big siblings to deal with, you're welcome.)

The buffet table was ready, set as far as possible from the glittered-out blue and gold tables and chairs. The winter bonfire was crackling for warmth and food-toasting opportunities. The lists of siblings and roommates had been double-checked. It looked like everything was ready for a picnic!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Yeah, there are at least a few students wondering what I use that bus for when I'm not picking up new kids," Kanan informed her, eyebrows raised. "I've probably had worse first impressions, but that one is definitely near the top of the list."

And now he was not just BDG, and Mean Bus Driver Guy, but also Sparklebus. Clearly this morning had gone well.

He could collect all the weird little nicknames from snarky little students all he wanted, none of them would ever reach BDG level. Hers was the first, dammit.

Though she would have to admit, Sparklebus was pretty great, too.

"Well," she offered, reasonably, "there's no denying that it probably helped do the job of getting at least some of the what-the-fuck out of their systems before getting here. That's always helpful."

"And anything I can do to help," Kanan replied, shaking his head a little. Smiling. Just a bit. "Presumably that's what our class is going to be for, though."

"Truuuuuuue," Summer agreed, "but the more they get out of their system today, the easier our jobs will be when start really dropping the big bombs on them.

"I'm really excited, by the way," she added, a faintly gushing afterthought that was only just confirming what was incredibly obvious. "I think it's going to be really great and cool, working with each other on this one."

"Might even make up for how you never once managed to take one of my classes before," Kanan teased, smirking. "Then again, maybe it's better this way. I prefer having you at the front of the room as an equal, anyway."

Having even some nominal measure of... what... rank? Over her? Teacher-to-student? That would've been weird.

"Saaaaame," Summer agreed. "That would have been....weird. But, also, don't blame me that all your previous classes available to me just sucked. That, and the fact that I only really had three chances to take one of your classes, and the first time around, I didn't even get to pick, my classes were being picked out for me by some anonymous alien office drone trying to make sure I don't cause too much trouble, remember? And your classes don't usually scream Nice Safe Anti-Rebellion Option.

"Oh!" she added as she thought back and remembered. "And the second time around, I didn't get to pick, either, because Grampa Rick picked those because I was running around in that Apocalypse World and replaced temporarily by a robot! So that means I really only had one semester where I could have picked your class, but by then, we were good enough friends that it really would have been weird at that point. What were you even teaching that semester? Do you remember, or does it all just blur together? That would have been spring 2018, before I graduated."

"Uh," Kanan said, squinting and leaning his head back and thinking. "I know I took one semester off, and you gave me hell for that," he replied. "I'm pretty sure that was the one."

It was. It was absolutely the one.

"I take one semester off, and of course it's the one where you finally had the opportunity to take my class, too."

"Oh, yeah!" said Summer, laughing a little. "I remember that now!"

It had been ages ago, BDG. Aaaaggggeeeessss.

"I guess the universe just wasn't lining up in our favor for that, huh? It had to save all the awesomeness for when we joined forces together."

"And now here we are, our forces combined," Kanan replied, chuckling. "What are we going to do for the first class? Traditional introductions, or throw them right into the deep end?"

The deep end that was going to get so very deep, wasn't it?

You'd think they could have managed to figure some of this stuff out earlier, but...nah. Flying by the seat of their pants was more fun and more their style anyway, right?

Right!

"Our class is toward the end of the week," Summer pointed out, "so they're going to be sick to death of introductions at that point. I say we throw them right into that deep end....maybe in a way that also serves as an introduction?"

She didn't know exactly how to marry the two, but, give her a second, she might come up with something.

Kanan squinted a little, mulling that over.

"I like it," he replied, already ticking through a few vague ideas, himself. "I suppose we could..." He frowned a little. "I don't know. Hit up the danger shop. Drag them through something we're used to that isn't the norm around here..."

He pause, and then added, "Get them to do the same?"

"Ooooooh," said Summer, her head bobbing a little in an approving nod, "I like that! Sort of a...show and tell, to gauge what everyone's used to and where they might be coming from! And since it is later in the week, anyone new will have had a chance to better understand where they stand on that level comparative weirdness. That's brilliant, BDG. Now I'm going to have to think of something real good."

"Dibs on a cantina," Kanan said immediately. And then broke into a little grin. "It's homey."

You know. Because the variety of folks you'd find in one and not at all because he'd spent a good number of cumulative months just passed out on cantina floors.

"Cantina's all yours, my friend," Summer assured him. "That's way more your scene than mine. Mine's more..." She narrowed her eyes a little, since she'd still been trying to think of something, "...creating a teeny, tiny rift in the space-time continuum because you threw a raging house party kegger and your parents are coming home earlier than you expected."

"And there's a problem I can honestly say I've never had," Kanan admitted, tilting his head.

It was difficult to tell, sometimes, if he was bemused or impressed. Sometimes it managed to be a combination of the two.
