Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Everyone had been keeping a close eye on the weather, and gave a sigh of relief as it turned out to be a pretty decent day. Sure, it was still a little warm, but it wasn't humid, or raining something strange. You had to take your wins where you could get them around here.

As usual, there was a buffet of food awaiting the folks on the welcome shuttle, and blue and gold tables and chairs were set up across the lawn, most still covered in glitter from the last picnic. Sorry ~~not~~! Happy picnic day!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Tip had her own nametag in a prominent position, and was scanning the group for unmatched newbies. She double checked the name she had jotted down for her new little sib.

"Looking for a Vette? Possibly a Vette-y? Not sure about the pronunciation yet."

"It's Vette," came a surprisingly upbeat reply from somewhere within the group. The unmatched newbie in question just happened to also be putting up one blue hand to go with her shout, and she was looking for the person who was expecting her with no small amount of curiosity. "Just Vette. And you are...?"

Look, the assignments were written in High Galactic. Vette knew Aurebesh and could puzzle her way through about twenty ancient cipher languages, but High Galactic was fancy.

Which was just fine for Tip. She was well familiar with how hard some languages were to read.

"Gratuity Tucci," she said, offering a wave of her own. "But most people call me Tip." There, she had enough names to make up for Vette's singular one. "I'm your school-assigned Big Sibling. In theory, I'm here to give you the low-down and help make the transition to Fandom a little easier. In practice, we kind of tend to just confuse you all even more, but hey, it's a noble idea, right?"

"Well, it's better than leaving me here still not completely convinced I'm not hallucinating," Vette noted wryly. She smiled as she made her way over to her... sibling, she supposed. "I'm still trying to figure out what I'm even doing here, but at this point I figure if I roll with it, either it'll start making sense or I'll get so good at pretending it won't matter anyway."

"That's the spirit!" Tip said. "Seriously, the island tends to just kind of grab people out of space-time, and the people who pout about it for ages are kind of boring." She shrugged with a smile. "Alright, so I'm pretty sure you're not from anywhere around here, galactically speaking, so we'll start with some basics: this is Fandom Island, on the planet Earth, in a podunk little solar system out towards the edge of a galaxy we call the Milky Way. People end up here from all different planets, timelines, and universes, though, so even though most of us are probably from some version of Earth, there's still a bunch of nonhumans running around that hopefully you won't feel totally isolated."

Huh. Their galaxy had a name. A weird, kind of curse name.

... Wait.

"I'm in a different galaxy? Okay, now I'm sure I breathed in something funny somewhere back there. When even the Sith seems like a nice, approachable, reasonable person?" She shook her head, lekku flopping around a little behind her as she did so. "I've never heard of any of this before. And now apparently I'm going to school here. There's an adjustment."

She was totally glancing around to see if she could spot any of the other non-humans, though.

"If it helps, I'm pretty sure there's at least three or four other people from your galaxy already on the island." What with Vette having the same head-tentacle things as Kanan's not-girlfriend did and all.

~~... Kind of cute name, not kind of curse name. Fingers, what.~~

"Already? You mean, besides the other kid that came here on the same bus?"

Yup. Definitely looking around some more. At this point, Vette would settle for seeing a Togruta or a Nautolan or a Rodian or...

"Yup. My swo -- um. Fighting teacher for one." Kanan was still pretty paranoid about people finding about about the whole Jedi thing, and she wasn't sure how many other people from his area even fought with swords. "And the lady who runs the junkyard's probably even from your same planet."

"Well, that's convenient. Maybe one of them can find me a translation tool for all the High Galactic writing around here."

Vette still hadn't even achieved 'nametag.'

"Probably," Tip said with a shrug. "And if not, you wouldn't be the first non-Earthling I've helped teach how to read."

That'd be J.Lo. And then Peridot.

"I can also give you tips on, like, getting around the dorms and who'll take pity on you if you don't have money for new clothes and stuff yet."

Vette gave Tip a grateful smile at that, heck yes.

"I will take those tips," she declared, throwing in a nod for good measure. "At this point, I probably need all the help I can get, you know?"

"See, then the Sib program is already working," Tip said. "Oh, and if a you see a little green scaly thing running around, don't let it bite you. I mean, not letting things bite you is generally a good plan, but especially not the little green scaly things."

"No getting bitten by little green things," Vette echoed, nodding thoughtfully. "Okay, what are those? Dangerous? Should I stay armed while I'm out and about?"

... She was already going to stay armed while she was out and about. But still.

"I mean, that's no the worst plan. Most of the time things here are perfectly safe, but we do get invaded fairly regularly." Tip shook her head. "But the little green things are called gremlins. Their venom is a hallucinogenic."

Vette was silent for a long while.

"I'm adding 'bitten by a gremlin' to my list of explanations for today now, you know."

"It'd be weird if you didn't."

"And I definitely wouldn't want to do anything weird."

Said the one who had tried to steal the shuttle this morning.

"Not on your first day," Tip agreed, facetiously wide-eyed. "You'd get a reputation!"

"A reputation! Oh, what is a girl to do?"

Vette let a hand flutter about in front of her chest for a moment, and then she bent over a little, laughing.

Tip giggled back, then shook her head, her curls bouncing.

"Okay, but on a more serious note: the radio could potentially report on anything you do."

. . . Damn, that sounded creepy when she put it that way.

Yeah, there was no way to not make that sound creepy. Vette sobered up almost immediately, giving Tip a faintly concerned, slightly suspicious look.

"Report on me? Are there cameras set up that I haven't noticed? That wasn't what that one kid taking selfies was doing, was it?"

Note to self: Beat Prompto up and steal his camera later.

"Nope. It's all squirrels." Tip looked around and finally spotted one hanging out on a nearby tree trunk. "Those little things. I've heard you can bribe them with alcohol, but I've never tried."

Vette looked at what Tip was indicating, and then frowned and pointed a finger at it.

"You better watch what you say about me, you little creep!"

Seriously, spying on students? That was just wrong.

"Haven't tried that either," Tip admitted. "We'll have to listen to radio tomorrow to see if it worked."
