Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Everyone had been keeping a close eye on the weather, and gave a sigh of relief as it turned out to be a pretty decent day. Sure, it was still a little warm, but it wasn't humid, or raining something strange. You had to take your wins where you could get them around here.

As usual, there was a buffet of food awaiting the folks on the welcome shuttle, and blue and gold tables and chairs were set up across the lawn, most still covered in glitter from the last picnic. Sorry ~~not~~! Happy picnic day!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Someone really needs to get onto making a translation app for those of you who aren't familiar with the Roman alphabet."

"I would even just take something that reads things out loud," Vette admitted, "but that might not work for everybody anyway."

"That I'm pretty sure they already have!" Tip said. "We can check when we get you one, but I bet I can find it."

"That would be so useful," Vette replied, pleased at the thought. "I mean, if I'm still here long enough I'll have to learn to read anyway, but I'll take anything that can make my life easier in the meantime."

"Sure. If you want, we can head into town tomorrow and go looking for supplies. Including a phone with a screen reader and dictation functions."

"Oh, that is something I very much want," Vette replied brightly. "How many credits would something like that set me back?"

"No idea! We use dollars. But they can probably give you a good conversion rate at the bank, and if you don't have enough to cover it, I can give you a loan."

Life in Fandom was reasonably cheap, a fact which Tip had never, ever told her mom.

"And I'll pay you back as soon as I can," Vette promised. She wasn't usually quick to say things like that, but Tip was helpful enough that she wanted to make it clear that she would anyway.

"Sounds like a plan! I'm in room 411, come on over whenever you need. Have you gotten your room assignment yet?"

"I'm about to head on over for that, too," Vette replied, smiling easily. "But I'll be sure to stop by your room, for sure."

... If she could read the numbers. She might just end up knocking on every door on the fourth floor.

Fair. Yelling "Hey Tip!" would also probably work. The dorms weren't that big.

"Cool. Nice meeting you, Vette. You let me know if there's anything else you need."

"Will do! And hey, it was great to meet you, too. If you'd been like one of those boys who keeps staring, I probably would have had to kick you."

Sorry, Simon. Sorry, Prompto.

But not that sorry.

"And I'd've had deserved it," Tip said cheerfully. "But I have an advantage over those guys: my Earth already had people from other planets before I got here."

"Planets that don't have reliable space travel yet, huh?" Vette shook her head a little. "Poor boys from backrocket worlds don't even know what they're missing, you know?"

"Exactly. Humans from a lot of Earths are still figuring out that they don't have to stare at different looking humans, even."

Vette winced and hissed between her teeth a little. Bad look, humanity. Bad look.

"Well, hopefully they get used to it soon, because if I'm stuck here for a while, they're not getting a pass on it for long."

There would be kickin'.

"Either they will, or they'll get a lot better at hiding it," Tip assured her. "Though you'll probably have to put up with it again every time we get a bunch of new people through. Like I said, most people who end up here come from Earth."

Vette sighed.

"I guess if I can't find my way home, I'll deal with that, too." She paused. "Sooner or later, somebody is going to get kicked, though."

Right in the shins.

"Sooner or later, someone's gonna need it."

"Sooner or later, someone usually does," Vette agreed, smiling. "I knew you'd see it my way."

She liked Tip already.
