Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Everyone had been keeping a close eye on the weather, and gave a sigh of relief as it turned out to be a pretty decent day. Sure, it was still a little warm, but it wasn't humid, or raining something strange. You had to take your wins where you could get them around here.

As usual, there was a buffet of food awaiting the folks on the welcome shuttle, and blue and gold tables and chairs were set up across the lawn, most still covered in glitter from the last picnic. Sorry ~~not~~! Happy picnic day!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Rosa didn't want to be here. Rosa didn't want to teach. But apparently, Rosa was teaching, and the last thing she wanted was to go through with it and then get to the end and be told by those bastards that worked out these convoluted assignments and requirements to tell her she failed on a technically, that technically being not participating in bullshit things like these picnics.

So she was there, arms crossed, looking as unapproachable as she could possibly manage. Like she was about to punch the first person who dared to say one word to her about it right in the stomach.

"You got drafted to this, too?" Miguel asked. He was still Not Happy about the class he was supposed to teach, and was perfectly willing to be grumpy in cute company.

Rosa may have felt like she wanted to punch the first person who spoke to her at this thing, but she just slid her eyes over and hit Miguel with a glare instead. And then she slid her gaze down and a little behind, quirking a brow before it traveled back up to his face.

"No tights today?" she asked.

"Can't look that good all the time," Miguel quipped. "Mostly only wear the outfit when there's a chance regular clothes wouldn't survive. I don't imagine the picnics here get that rowdy."

Which could be either a good or a bad thing, depending.

Rosa looked like she'd concede to him that point, though she was thinking that at least things getting rowdy would make this picnic entertaining.

Also, she wasn't entirely convinced that he didn't just sometimes throw the outfit on just to strut around in at home.

She sighed, shaking her head slightly, too irritated even for good banter. "This is so dumb," she murmured.

"You're telling me." Miguel grimaced. "I got saddled with a class on 'mad science', because a friend thinks she's funny. You?"

Rosa thought about deflecting again, because she didn't exactly want to talk about it, but she had a feeling that it would probably keep trying to pop up again. She grunted.

"Part of my assignment here, apparently. If I even want to think about getting reassigned to my old precinct permanently, I have to teach some stupid class to encourage safety for the community, something lame like that."

And it sounded really lame when she said it outloud, too, so she was going to make sure she mentioned the rest of it.

"I got to pick the subject, though, as long as it fit the criteria. I'm calling it Bad Ass Bitch Survival Guide."

Because if she was stuck being a lame teacher, she could at least have a bad-ass sounding class.

"Nice." Miguel grinned. "You should at least get some kicking ass in, right?"

Again, Rosa found herself with an expression conceding a point to him. "Yeah," she said, "there's at least that. At least it's not...what did you say you were doing? Mad science?"

"Mad science," he agreed. "Which will probably end up being mostly about telling people not to suck dangerous chemicals up by mouth or assume that lightning causes miracles."

"A.K.A. dumb science," Rosa decided after a minute to look at Miguel and discern how serious he was being. "Honestly, at that point, if you need a class to to teach you that stuff, you're better off just letting natural selection run its course."

Miguel grinned. "Tempting. I doubt the school would care for it, though."

"Yeah." Rosa sighed, and it almost sounded wistful if it weren't also so dry. "Stupid school and its wanting to avoid liabilities and dead kids."

And yet here they were, letting her teach a class that would involve weapons.

"Bad for business," Miguel agreed solemnly. "Nothing to be done about it."

It would be a little hard to catch, but if you listened just right, you might have picked up on a sound that might have been a soft snort of a laugh.

Then she cocked Rosa cocked her chin a little in his direction. "You ever teach before?" she asked.

"Haven't had the dubious pleasure," Miguel said dryly. "You?"

"Once," Rosa said, nodding. "Kind of. Had to help with a Junior Policeman Program. Worst five minutes of my life."

Worse than prison, apparently. Those kids were brutal.

"Yeah, that doesn't sound fun," Miguel agreed. "At least it was short, though. I have a feeling I'll be drinking a lot this semester." For all the good it did him.

Rosa was quiet for a moment, then glanced over at Tight Pants thoughtfully. Then another moment, back to glaring at the crowd.

"Tuesday nights at the bar are usually pretty good," she said. "If you survive your first week...maybe I'll buy you one."

Maybe.

Miguel grinned. "Surprised you didn't offer if I didn't make it."

"If you didn't make it," Rosa pointed out, "that'd make you a loser. I don't buy drinks for losers."

"Fortunately, I've never been a loser."

He had totally been a loser as a kid.

"See you Tuesday?"
