Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Everyone had been keeping a close eye on the weather, and gave a sigh of relief as it turned out to be a pretty decent day. Sure, it was still a little warm, but it wasn't humid, or raining something strange. You had to take your wins where you could get them around here.

As usual, there was a buffet of food awaiting the folks on the welcome shuttle, and blue and gold tables and chairs were set up across the lawn, most still covered in glitter from the last picnic. Sorry not! Happy picnic day!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Again, Rosa found herself with an expression conceding a point to him. "Yeah," she said, "there's at least that. At least it's not...what did you say you were doing? Mad science?"

"Mad science," he agreed. "Which will probably end up being mostly about telling people not to suck dangerous chemicals up by mouth or assume that lightning causes miracles."

"A.K.A. dumb science," Rosa decided after a minute to look at Miguel and discern how serious he was being. "Honestly, at that point, if you need a class to to teach you that stuff, you're better off just letting natural selection run its course."

Miguel grinned. "Tempting. I doubt the school would care for it, though."

"Yeah." Rosa sighed, and it almost sounded wistful if it weren't also so dry. "Stupid school and its wanting to avoid liabilities and dead kids."

And yet here they were, letting her teach a class that would involve weapons.

"Bad for business," Miguel agreed solemnly. "Nothing to be done about it."

It would be a little hard to catch, but if you listened just right, you might have picked up on a sound that might have been a soft snort of a laugh.

Then she cocked Rosa cocked her chin a little in his direction. "You ever teach before?" she asked.

"Haven't had the dubious pleasure," Miguel said dryly. "You?"

"Once," Rosa said, nodding. "Kind of. Had to help with a Junior Policeman Program. Worst five minutes of my life."

Worse than prison, apparently. Those kids were brutal.

"Yeah, that doesn't sound fun," Miguel agreed. "At least it was short, though. I have a feeling I'll be drinking a lot this semester." For all the good it did him.

Rosa was quiet for a moment, then glanced over at Tight Pants thoughtfully. Then another moment, back to glaring at the crowd.

"Tuesday nights at the bar are usually pretty good," she said. "If you survive your first week...maybe I'll buy you one."

Maybe.

He had totally been a loser as a kid.
