Rory situated herself behind the desk and became deeply absorbed in a well-worn copy of To Kill a Mockingbird.

[*cries at LJ* So sorry for the delay, people. For some reason, LJ hates my OCD and kept eating my comments. Hence why there is no lunchtime in the library today, unless I manage to fix it somehow.]

"Good morning," Zero said as she breezed in after Driver's Ed. "I need a nap."

"Morning. And go for it. I'll make sure the wallabies leave you alone," Rory replied with a wave.

Zero looked wary. "Wallabies? Okay, now I'm awake."

"There are wallabies that grow hair hopping around," Rory explained.

"Huh. They must live in the preserve. I've heard there are all sorts of weird animals out there."

"There was one in the dorms. What other kinds of animals live in the preserve, though?"

"Well, I was reading online about the Teal Deer. Apparently the Fandom preserve has one of the largest Teal Deer populations left in the wild in the world."

"Oh! Are those the ones that are like, really wee?"

"Yeah, they're supposed to be, like, the size of spaniels or something. And teal. I think they're a subspecies of some miniature Indian deer I can't pronounce. You saw one? They're supposed to be really shy."

Rory shook her head. "I haven't, no. But I know there's supposed to be a way to draw them out, right?"

"Hang on..." Zero looked up the Teal Deer on the computer quickly. "'The Teal Deer, or Muntiacus muntjac aquamarinus, is commonly drawn out of hiding by long-winded speeches. The Teal Deer are inexplicably drawn to the speechgiver and will form semicircles around them, staring intently.' So we can draw 'em out by talkin' at them...oh, no, that's terrible!"

"Long-winded speeches?" Rory asked, wrinkling her nose. "What a weird thing."

"Well, they're teal," Zero said distractedly. "They're not very normal to start with...maybe they just like the droning, repetitive sounds." She was still reading the webpage. "Apparently they're very endangered."

"Oh no," Rory said, peering over Zero's shoulder. "Because...of 'hunters and/or those who deliver short, unsatisfactory speeches'?"

"Yeah. 'Some hunters,'" Zero read off the webpage, "'will use pre-prepared speeches to draw out the Teal Deer, who are prized for their distinctive hides.' We should do something."

"Like what?" Rory asked, looking fretful.

"We could stage a protest-slash-fundraiser for the deer. And sing...deer songs. D'you know any deer songs?"

Rory frowned. "Only Christmas ones. You know, like Rudolph and Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer. Did I ever tell you about when a deer hit my car?"

Zero tugged at her hair as she thought about that. "Hmm. We could change 'reindeer' to 'Teal Deer' but running over grandma sends the wrong message...a deer hit your car? Not the other way 'round?"

"We could change words of other songs. You're good at that," Rory replied. "And yeah. I was on my way to take a test, and this deer ran into my car. It was fine, but I was late, and no one believed me."

"That's terrible. That no one believed you, I mean. 'M glad the deer was okay."

"So," Rory said, changing the subject. "You and Peter tonight, huh?"

"Yes. Take two. He sent me flowers."

"Awwwwwwwwwww."
