Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather had turned out absolutely lovely for today's picnic, through no interference of dark magic (as far as anyone knew). The bonfire had been scrapped for the season, replaced with more blue and gold chairs and tables for people to sit at. The usual buffet was out, and this time there were plates and to-go containers, because really, no one should have to resort to the unsanitary measure of pocket food in the 21st century.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

As far as the Kimera were concerned, touching hands was a prelude to sexytimes, and while Kanan was certainly not terrible looking in the face area, Liam was already in a relationship.

“Is that last thing something that happens often?” he asked.

And see, if Liam had said as much, Kanan totally would have passed on the handshake! He was totally used to adjusting for the sake of customs he wasn't familiar with. Side effect of having such a diverse home galaxy.

"Not to my knowledge," Kanan admitted, "but with teenagers, you can never be sure. Especially the ones that show up around here."

He would have said that about basically anybody here. Teenagers. Teachers. Townies...

"So... be on my guard, got it," Liam nodded. "What's a danger shop?"

"Interactive holotechnology," Kanan explained. "And possibly your best friend on rainy days. You can set up basically any scenario you need in there. And there are safeties in place so that nobody gets hurt."

“That’s good to know,” Liam said. “Especially given I’m running a class that involves a significant amount of jumping from high places, and the holographic tech I’m familiar with doesn’t have much in the way of safety protocols.” So he wouldn’t have necessarily considered it a better option than just portaling to a physical location.

"Gotta love the safeties," Kanan chuckled. "If you want someone to go over the controls sometime, hit me up. It isn't like I have much else to do."

Besides a job, a class, and a fledgling rebellion.

Well, Liam understood those responsibilities. Sort of. He’d never done a class before, but job and resistance movement? Not that that was the kind of thing that was likely to come up in what was only their second conversation.

“I may end up taking you up on that,” Liam said with a nod.

"Great," Kanan replied. "And if you need me, I'm at Luke's on Sundays, I teach my own class on Thursdays, and I'm usually in the park on Fridays training one of the students in swordplay."

Which he'd be doing without his lightsaber handy until he could figure out whether that Mandalorian girl was safe or not.

"If all that fails, Hera at the scrapyard can probably point you to me, and I've got a phone I sometimes even answer."

He answered it fine, honest.

“My shuttle’s at the parking there, and I even managed to finally meet Hera yesterday, so I suppose that’s convenient,” Liam grinned. the

"That does make things simpler," Kanan agreed, returning that grin with one of his own. "And you? I suppose you're down at the station fairly often, hm?"

“A few times a week,” Liam nodded. “But it’s not like this place needs much in the way of policing, and the Troopers are...” he gave a small shrug and a sigh.

Kanan tilted his head at Liam at that.

"We have troopers in basically the same armor where I come from," he noted. "I don't suppose you'd mind finishing that sentence?"

It was kind of important.

“You do?” Liam said, eyebrow raised. “Huh. I more or less... inherited them, I guess, when I took over the place. But they’re not the most- motivated? People I’ve ever had to work with?” To be fair, his previous co-workers had literally been implanted with motivational imperatives, but shh.

Funny thing. So had some of Kanan's.

The one motivation they'd been implanted with hadn't exactly instilled in Kanan much faith in men wearing buckets.

"Oh yeah? Because back home, they're... pretty motivated, I'd say. Sounds like time away from the Empire's made your bunch lazy."

Yeah, that... didn’t sound like the kind of thing someone who had positive associations with the Troopers would say.

“Why do I get the feeling that’s a good thing?” he asked.

"Because I think we can all agree that it would be a bad thing if anybody were to have a shootout with your troopers in the Fandom streets," Kanan supplied lightly.

You know. That sort of 'lightly' that very clearly qualified as, 'a little too lightly.'

“Yes,” Liam said, matching that too-light tone. “Let’s not do that. Especially since it’s be terribly one-sided, they’re not the best about remembering to take firearms.” At least on a day to day basis. They were fairly good about doing so during the semi-frequent invasions, at least.

"Well then," Kanan's expression darkened slightly, "let's just say that that alone sets them apart from the troopers from back home."

In a big way, in fact.

"Huh," Liam mused. "Yeah. I'm getting the picture you're painting here. We had a group kind of like that back where I'm from, too." There was a slight eyeroll accompanying that statement. The Volunteers had been a constant thorn in his side, even as he'd had to pretend to be on the same side as them. "I had no idea the Troopers had that sort of history," he added, tone sympathetic.

"Where I'm from, the history of troopers in that armor specifically is pretty short so far," Kanan noted. "Only about a decade. But it's... let's say it's been an eventful decade. If the island hadn't stranded me here, I would've taken one look at who was working in your station, turned around, and left."

Hell, he'd tried.

Liam considered that.

"... You know, I probably would've done the same if I'd come here to find packs of Volunteers roaming the streets," he admitted. And yes, that was a capital-V Volunteer in there.

[ooc: I NEVER MEANT TO DROP THIS PLEASE FORGIVE MEEEEE.]

"Volunteers," Kanan echoed, making note of the extra meaning behind that word, even if he couldn't hear the grammar, per se. "They sound about as pleasant as the troopers. You know, it was maybe my... third day on the island that I found out about them? I was pulled here with a ship full of explosive cargo, and I was going to ask at the station if there was somewhere to safely store it. Wound up turning right around and performing controlled detonations in the mountains of whatever world it was the island had been visiting at the time, instead."

He'd pissed off some bears.

It had been an eventful first week.

"Sounds like a hell of a first week," Liam agreed.

And then the rest of that sentence caught up with him. "What do you mean 'world the island had been visiting'?"

The island's tendency to occasionally just pack up and move places was not something he'd had the joy of experiencing just yet.

"As far as I can tell, Fandom's been some kind of trans-dimensional spaceship all this time," Kanan replied, shrugging. Not because it wasn't a big deal. More because he didn't know entirely what to make of it. "I didn't even see Earth for months after arriving here. The whole island just kept packing up and moving around. You have no idea how many times I almost decided, 'this is close enough,' and just stayed behind along the way."

That world with the Asari had been promising.

"Trans-di-" Liam broke off. "Of course it is. I don't know why I'm even surprised," he said, absently rubbing the palm of one hand with the thumb from his other. Even just thinking about that sort of thing was enough to make the shaqarava itchy, it seemed.
