Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather had turned out absolutely lovely for today's picnic, through no interference of dark magic (as far as anyone knew). The bonfire had been scrapped for the season, replaced with more blue and gold chairs and tables for people to sit at. The usual buffet was out, and this time there were plates and to-go containers, because really, no one should have to resort to the unsanitary measure of pocket food in the 21st century.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Trans-di-" Liam broke off. "Of course it is. I don't know why I'm even surprised," he said, absently rubbing the palm of one hand with the thumb from his other. Even just thinking about that sort of thing was enough to make the shaqarava itchy, it seemed.

"I'm kind of surprised this is the first you've heard of it," Kanan noted after a pause. "You've been here for a while, haven't you? I guess with everything else that goes on around here, a little travel is practically normal by comparison."

"About a year," Liam nodded. "You're the first one to bring that up, as it happens."

Not that he talked to all that many people on the island to begin with. He really should do better at that.

Kanan sighed and shook his head.

"Too much happens around here in between all of the nothing, I suppose." No, no, the Nothing was something else entirely. "I could give you a rundown of a few of the places the island stopped, but honestly, I spent about half that time either drinking or trying to come up with ways to get back home."

"It's probably in the files at the station," Liam said. "... Unless that was after the previous Sheriff took off, of course."

Kanan paused for a moment, and then shrugged.

"You know, I have no idea if there was a Sheriff in place when I stopped by there? Seeing the Troopers was more than enough, and I didn't look back." There was another moment before he added, "but you seem to get it. That's reassuring. Somewhere along the way apparently I forgot that cops are meant to be the good guys."

In fairness, where he came from, troopers were essentially military, too. Seeing that military staffing the station in a dinky little nowhere town had been unsettling in several ways.

"Meant to be being the key words, there," Liam said pointedly. "And trust me, I get that. My old job had plenty of people who were in it just for the sake of having power over others. I definitely don't miss that."

"See? Good to know. And now if the island gets anyone new and they start freaking out over your cops, you can probably guess where they're from and why it's upsetting them."

Which probably didn't hurt. Especially if blasters happened.

So far, Kanan had been the only one to freak out. At least, in Liam's presence anyway. But yes, useful information that he was going to file away.

"Really, of anyone who works at the station, Rosa is the one to worry about." Liam liked her, sure, but she had... a limited amount of patience, let's put it that way.

"Rosa is? Really?"

Look, he didn't know her well, but she seemed okay. And the fact that he got the impression from radio that Seivarden hated her didn't hurt, either.

Kanan wasn't supposed to hate people. It was pretty unbecoming of a Jedi. But some people really begged to be hated.

"Oh, she's good at her job, but she's got something of a short fuse," Liam clarified. "Doesn't really take a lot to test her patience."

So it was shocking, really, that she and Seivarden apparently didn't get along.

Between Rosa's short fuse and Seivarden's inclinations toward pretentiousness and a state of constantly being offended, it really was no shock at all.

"Ah," Kanan replied, nodding a little. "I suppose I did get a bit of that impression from her. Hard to tell for sure; she was either more interested in my sword or my dog."

In fairness, he had a cool sword and a cool dog.

"Dogs are one of the few topics I've seen get a real smile and not a 'it physically pains me to make my face do this' smile from her," Liam offered.

"And that's because dogs are great," Kanan laughed. "So she's got a short fuse, but at least she's not heartless."

"She can and will deny that 'not-heartless' description, though," Liam said.

As these sorts of things went, it was still a step up from Liam's previous coworker. He'd take "claims to be heartless" over "actual sociopath" any day, thank you.

"Plenty of people do," Kanan mused. "The ones who deny it hard enough are usually the ones with the best-hidden, softest insides, though."

He used to deny it, too. Vehemently.
