Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather had turned out absolutely lovely for today's picnic, through no interference of dark magic (as far as anyone knew). The bonfire had been scrapped for the season, replaced with more blue and gold chairs and tables for people to sit at. The usual buffet was out, and this time there were plates and to-go containers, because really, no one should have to resort to the unsanitary measure of pocket food in the 21st century.

Happy picnic day, everyone!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

And she wasn't going to say that she wasn't, either! Plausible deniability and all.

"Doesn't seem like a big enough place to need help getting around," Sabine noted. Sure, there was a castle (???), but it wasn't like there were tons of people or anything, either.

"Fandom makes up for that in other ways," Sparkle replied, pausing for a moment to consider the whole... armor on tight clothing look. "Little things you might not think about, like what kind of currency you have on you, and what to do if you spot a gremlin."

Oh, there were her eyebrows arching all the way up. "Gremlin?"

"They're little green guys who run around naked and really enjoy causing mischief. Mostly by biting people." He paused and then added, "Their venom is hallucinogenic."

Two minutes into meeting his first ever little sibling, and already he was pretty sure he sounded crazy. So, that was good, right?

Sabine glanced down at her armor. "I think I'm okay there," she decided, even if she might already be considering some modifications to the body glove. "What else you got?"

"A lot of the rest of it kind of depends on what you're used to," Norman hedged. "Some people are going to freak out over..." He nodded toward Sidon. "... over things like the really big shark man more than others, you know?"

He'd been a little intimidated by Sidon at first, himself. Which had been doubly interesting, given that Sidon was his big sibling.

"It's weirder that most everyone here is human," Sabine admitted.

Which, she came from Mandalore and then went to the Imperial Academy, so it wasn't that she wasn't used to being around all humans, she just thought it was more boring.

And Norman thought that the handful of non-humans around here made the place more exciting! But then, the only people he'd known before Fandom had been humans, and dead humans. So it was probably more a matter of perspective.

"Fair enough," he replied. "How about invasions? We had a bunch of monsters trying to eat people's souls a few weeks back, and apparently that sort of thing isn't unusual."

Which was why he still occasionally found himself being distracted by some really weird ghosts.

"...Okay, that's new," she said. "Soul-eating? Really?"

"Or something like it, yeah. We had people in comas for a few days before someone showed up and told us that the cure was coffee."

Still not feeling any less silly talking about actual real life events, here. Go figure.

"Sure, makes total sense." It did not. But Sabine had seen too much over the last few days to think she was being pranked here. "So no monsters left in town now?"

This felt important.

"Not really, no," Norman replied with a shrug. "I mean, there are the alots in the woods? But mostly if you leave them alone, they'll leave you alone."

Unless it was an alot of anger or something. But somebody who showed up on the island wearing full armor could probably handle herself.

Sabine frowned. "What's an alot?"

"Oh, it's a big, hairy thing that lives in the preserve," Norman explained. "Usually they're just kind of shaggy and grumpy looking, but if they have, I don't know... a theme, I guess, things can get kind of weird."

"Is there anything that doesn't get kind of weird here?" Sabine checked.

To his credit, Norman actually stopped to consider that question for a few moments before settling on, "Not really, no."

So, that was helpful.

"There are little rodents that take notes on things people did each day, and then someone reads those notes over the radio. Sometimes, little kids from the future show up to pester people, calling them their parents. I haven't seen it happen yet, but apparently sometimes girls turn into boys and boys turn into girls for a few days... It's all pretty weird."

"Okay," she said, taking that in. "Can we go back to the spying rodents?"

"Squirrels," Norman supplied, looking around for a moment, and then pointing to one up in a tree, steadfastly taking notes of the picnic, puncutated with the occasional drink of rum. "I don't know why they do it. Maybe because it's something they're good at and they need money for their drinking habit. But that's a thing they do."

Sabine looked up at the squirrel, and she was forever going to be confused by the drinking. "That's going to be a problem. Is there any way to get them to stop?"

"I've heard you can bribe them with rum," Norman offered. "I've never tried it before, myself, but if you want privacy that's probably the only really reliable way."

"I'll keep that in mind." Would the liquor store sell rum to a fifteen-year-old? We'll find out! "Should I ask if there's more to tell me? I feel like there's a lot more to tell me."

"There's always more," Norman replied, "so it's probably a good thing you seem to be taking this so well."

He tilted his head a little bit.

"There are people with powers," he offered. "Who can do magic or see things other people can't," ahem, "or do other stuff that most humans can't. Local law enforement is... weird, but kind of harmless. I don't think I've ever seen them actually upholding the law."

He paused for a moment.

"I'm not entirely sure if there are laws."

She was going to have to cycle back on the powers thing in a moment, but first... "How is local law enforcement weird?"

She liked that they slacked off, though, especially if she was going to have to steal rum/pay for it later to bribe squirrels.

Ugh, this place already.

"They seem way over-equipped for people you never see out and about in a crisis," Norman offered. "Armor from head to toe. Sort of like yours, I guess, but all white? Less fun looking, more utilitarian."

Or totalitarian? Or just plain overdone? Practical, with a side of possibly-impractical-for-here and a dash of 'how do they even drink coffee?'

"Troopers? Do you have stormtroopers here?" she asked.

Because that would just figure.
