Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The forecasts had been calling for rain all week, so when it was time to get everything set up for the picnic and it was sunny and warm outside instead, well, that was hopefully a good sign of things to come.

There were tables set up all around the lawn of the school with blue and gold tableclothes and chairs, and the usual buffet of food (and ice cream!) was waiting for hungry folks to dig in. There was also a second table with nametags and lists to help the new people locate their siblings and roommates.

Once the food was ready and the tables were glittered, everything was set for a very pleasant picnic indeed.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

The tiny would be because of the way French people cooked and the hotdogs would've been because of the American part, Hannibal, for shame.

"Like when you sit down on a chair but you forget where it was and you miss it by inches?" Philomena said, pulling a face. "That's funny when it happens to somebody else, sure."

"Not precisely, no." Hannibal answered. "I was talking about the idea that there are an infinite number of worlds existing simultaneously, and that one can travel between them."

"Oh," Philomena said, after a beat. "You're one of those science men."

"I know quite a bit of science, yes," Hannibal allowed. "However, in this case, it's important knowledge."

He nodded at the picnic. "The people here come from many different worlds, many different times. You may encounter a number of things here that are unusual or completely impossible in your world."

Philomena squinted at him.

She waited for those words to make some amount of sense. When they didn't, she made them make sense.

"Like people wearing several watches at once?" she said. "Or is it more like there's multiple time lines running through bits here and there?"

It had to be noted she meant physical time lines.

Hannibal...wasn't entirely certain if she meant physical lines or not, but he was reasonably certain she was wrong.

Call it a hunch based on the rest of what she'd said.

"No. I mean that I have had students from the eighteenth and nineteenth century, students who were ghosts, and students who were from other planets. This island is stranger than most people are accompanied with."

"Oh," Philomena said, like that was about as surprising as finding out someone'd put carrots on her bacon sandwich. "So you're like a million years old. Don't they all get tripped up, mucking about with lines and clocks and such?"

"I am not that old," Hannibal said. "People travel through time to get here. And yes, sometimes they do get confused by the differences. Are you from Earth in the present day?"

Hannibal was beginning to think he'd never be able to explain Fandom to this one.

He was also thinking it really might not matter.

"Never mind." He waved that off. "What brings you here?"
