Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The forecasts had been calling for rain all week, so when it was time to get everything set up for the picnic and it was sunny and warm outside instead, well, that was hopefully a good sign of things to come.

There were tables set up all around the lawn of the school with blue and gold tableclothes and chairs, and the usual buffet of food (and ice cream!) was waiting for hungry folks to dig in. There was also a second table with nametags and lists to help the new people locate their siblings and roommates.

Once the food was ready and the tables were glittered, everything was set for a very pleasant picnic indeed.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"There's nothin' to be nervous about," Steve said. "The kids here are pretty nice and won't give you a hard time. What are you teaching?"

But what if what she was nervous about had nothing to do with the teaching part?

"Iron Fandom. It's just a silly cooking competition thing. I don't think we even have that big of a class."

Steve laughed. "Mine's slightly larger and about not being able to cook, so that might explain it? Maybe my kids can take your class next term."

"If we make it that far," Raven agreed cheerfully.

The smile was probably pretty obviously pasted on, but hey. She was trying.

"How do you teach people how to not be able to cook?"

"Oh, they show up not being able to cook," Steve said. "My co-teacher and I just aren't very qualified to teach 'em how to improve. Tony blew up a microwave making apple pie."

"That is . . . very Fandom," Raven said. "What are your introductions going to be, name, grade, and worst kitchen mishap to date?"

"If you don't mind me stealing that, yes," Steve said.

"It's all yours," Raven said. "Especially if I can pretend to be you as a guest judge in my class at some point."

Steve blinked. "Pretend to be me?" he repeated.

Raven shifted, blue scales flipping over in a cascade until there was a young blonde man sitting in front of Steve.

"I'm a shapeshifter."

"Holy cow," Steve said. "That's incredible."

Raven shrugged, shifting back. "It's what I do. So . . . can I?"

"Sure," Steve said, smiling. "Just for class though, right?"

"Promise," Raven said. "And it won't be anything to tarnish your reputation. Or if it is, it'll be so ridiculous no one will believe it anyway."

"That's fine, then," Steve said. "So your class is a cooking contest?"

"Yup. Each week we'll give the students a special ingredient to use and see what they come up with. It's probably going to be a little insane but -- that's the fun part, right?"

That wasn't rhetorical. She really wasn't sure.

Steve laughed. "Could be. Depends on your ingredients. Are you thinking of stuff that's still alive, or just weird looking?"

"Just weird," Raven said. "My coteacher is super not going to be into anyone having to kill the food first."

To put it mildly.

"Fair enough," Steve said. "There's certainly a ton of unusual ingredients out there. I'm still catching up on all the takeout options available in this century."

"Oh yeah?" Raven perked up a little. "When are you from?"

"The 1940s," Steve said. "Back when Italian and Chinese food was still pretty exotic."

"Before Americans figured out they could eat different kinds of food," Raven agreed. "I'm from the 50s."

"So you've had the horror that is chop suey?" Steve guessed.

"I think I even thought it was exciting and new," Raven said. "I was only fifteen when I came here."

Steve grinned. "You've been to Ching Tai since then, right?"
