Library, Thursday (December 8)

The fog that seemed to envelop the entire island today was hardly enough, in and of itself, to cause Cosette much alarm. The strange creatures, on the other hand, and the sudden deterioration of many of the buildings in town?

Those things were more than enough to have her hurrying into the library early today in lieu of her morning walk, and making sure that the tables and chairs were arranged to accommodate a good-sized group of people. She was fairly certain she knew what to expect today, if past experience was any indication.

Obi-Wan arrived early in the morning. The library... looked different, somehow.

Of course it did. He sighed. "Well," he said, "I suppose we can start with seeing if any new volumes have appeared...?"

He was starting to get the hang of these crises.

Peridot had been so enraptured with the books in the library that she almost hadn't left at all, reading up on everything that she could get her tiny little hands on. She'd started with learning everything she possibly could about Earth weather patterns, because Constantine had mentioned snow when she'd mentioned something strange going on outside. Snow... had not been a good enough explanation for the flickering she'd seen, so she'd ventured outside again.

By the time she came back in, the library itself had changed, enough that she had to pause and double take before running up and down the aisles as quickly as her little legs could take her, poking and picking at things that she could swear hadn't been there before. After an hour or so of this, she paused in a section that contained what looked to be historical documents. Newspapers, that sort of thing, and squinted, reaching to remove something that didn't quite fit the configuration of the rest of the library.

"This isn't even a book," she muttered, squinting at the clipboard. "Fandom clinic... patient fell unconscious and awoke without most of his memories... November..."

Yeah, she was throwing her head back and waving the thing in the air.

"This doesn't even go here! It doesn't even have more than one page!"

Pedantry finds a clue. Well done, Peridot.

Ahsoka had woken with a bad feeling, as well as a weird buzzing in her teeth and montrals when she reached out into the Force (almost like that time Hardcase had dared talked her into licking the contacts on a blaster power pack) so she'd found herself headed towards the library. There'd been people here last time the island had given ehr this kind of feeling, as well as that stash of caf.

Rhys had never actually been to the library before now. In fact, he hadn't even meant to go to it now. He'd ended up there after running away from what reminded him strongly of a Pyscho. If they were more goth looking.

So, there he was. Looking terribly weirded out. "Why can't this place ever be normal?"

Rhys shuffled near to the one person in the room he knew to be competent in a fight. Not that he, like, needed the protection or anything. He just... desperately needed the protection. Okay, fine. Shut up.

"Does anyone know what the hell is going on?"

"That's what we're trying to figure out," Ahsoka said, then added "So long as Obi-Wan's still wearing his robe, we're fine."

Ahsoka, that would probably be more reassuring if Rhys actually knew about Obi-Wan's robe drama.

He would if he wasn't assuming Obi-Wan was going to fight people in the nude.

Also, his drama level leaned more toward raging narcissists.

Well, he was played by Ewan McGregor...

Ahsoka's tended more towards 'and now everything was on fire'. "Don't worry, right now, he's more likely to be cranky over the lack of decent caf than anything."

The only reason John was still pleasant-ish was that despite whatever had happened to the library, someone had seemingly put a preservation spell over his office in the nighttime, that was keyed to him.

In fact, it felt like him. But, well, not. He was trying not to think about it.

But that meant there was a stash of coffee and smokes in the office. One, he was hording for himself, because something something don't give the kids cigarettes. The other was being rationed, but he'd probably share if you were looking a bit rough.

"THAT TOO."

Volume, Peridot.

She frowned, turning the clipboard over in her hands, and then wrinkled her nose and held it up to Obi-Wan. It was so out of place here in the library, where she had been led to believe, between last night and this morning, they mostly made room for books and periodicals. And this wasn't even a good periodical. Somebody had scribbled out the year.

"Isn't even a book," she muttered again. "What's a medical?"

Non-organic life-form here, hi.

"Yeah, right here," Peridot agreed, running a tiny green finger down the length of the paper, and coming to rest on a bit about exactly that. "It says that the patient fell unconscious and woke up with a bunch of memories missing."

There was a long pause, and then she looked up at Obi-Wan in question.

"Is that normal for your species?"

Because really, it would explain so much about them.

"Yes, they do." Obi-Wan sighed. "How about we form a stack of notable material?"

He gestured towards the table. "It may be useful, or it may be nonsense. It is too early to tell."

Re: Research (12/8)

Peridot nodded, and then made her way over to the table. It took her a moment to get up there to place the clipboard on it - she had to climb onto a chair, first, after all - but once she was there, she took a moment to stare down thoughtfully at the clipboard before setting it down on the tabletop.

"There," she declared. "Stack started."

She still wasn't terribly sure what was notable about it, but she couldn't deny that having found something that one of the teachers here thought might be useful was satisfying all the same.

Deal with it, Ahsoka.

"If there's a generator somewhere, I could try getting it going," he said, perking up as he looked around. The new ECHO eye glowed just a bit as he tried scanning with it.

It was, admittedly, a work in progress on what it picked up on.

Rhys had quite literally stumbled onto something that could be useful here. And, since Ahsoka's stripper friend seemed to be in charge, guess who was getting the information. Guess.

"So, this looks ominous," he said, holding out the slip of paper and rubbing the growing bump on his forehead with his robotic hand. His real power was not dying from all the head trauma inflicted on him.

It's her. The creature in the tower, she's the one that binds us here. We know that. But I think she has her claws in the one that flies and sparks, and the octopus-creature and its plumed beast. I stabbed it once, and I heard her roar.

Even though Khadgar had been warned about times the island went completely strange, seeing it happen firsthand was a little more terrifying than he wanted to admit. So, he'd headed for the library, since books were always the answer when things went wrong, and he smiled softly at Cosette when he came in. "Good afternoon. Have you been here all morning?"

Rufus arrived late, looking untouched and untouchable aside from a faint tightness in his eyes and around his lips. He glanced at Peridot--a glance that lasted a few moments too long--and then flung himself into research with a will.

He preferred for people not to know exactly how smart he was, just like he preferred that they not know how driven he could be, or what he knew, or who he knew, or... really anything at all. But today, he dispensed with his usual laxity and was deep into books with a will very quickly.

Despite his own formidable abilities at narrowing searches and locating information (at heart, Rufus was more than half a hacker) it was by accident that he found it, while stooping down to inspect a low shelf and his attention being caught by a small journal. It looked scorched around the edges and, peculiarly, was soggy to the touch.

Rufus grimaced as he picked it up. He was fastidious by nature and this was disgusting. But, because he was a good researcher and this journal looked out of place... he looked through it.

Dates were listed, up until the 5th of December. He couldn't find a year anywhere, but the dates that were still in the book began in October, and went weekly forward in time.

Most of the entries were illegible.

The first entry read: Decided to start documenting irregularities. The black is seeping into our soil now. Or is it seeping out of it? Patterns swirl upwards--

He gently peeled the pages apart from one another, leaning against the stacks, and went further through the journal. It wasn't long until he came across the fourth entry, which read:

I think the black is in the air now. Wasn't there a magic against this, once?

Rufus went through the rest of the book with his attention honed to that of a fine toothed comb, finding nothing, before coming out of the stacks, the journal splayed open in his hand.

"I think I've found something."

Because this was Rufus he said it matter-of-factly rather than urgently or loudly.
