Library, Thursday (December 8)
The fog that seemed to envelop the entire island today was hardly enough, in and of itself, to cause Cosette much alarm. The strange creatures, on the other hand, and the sudden deterioration of many of the buildings in town?
Those things were more than enough to have her hurrying into the library early today in lieu of her morning walk, and making sure that the tables and chairs were arranged to accommodate a good-sized group of people. She was fairly certain she knew what to expect today, if past experience was any indication.

Re: Research (12/8)
Of course it did. He sighed. "Well," he said, "I suppose we can start with seeing if any new volumes have appeared...?"
He was starting to get the hang of these crises.
Re: Research (12/8)
By the time she came back in, the library itself had changed, enough that she had to pause and double take before running up and down the aisles as quickly as her little legs could take her, poking and picking at things that she could swear hadn't been there before. After an hour or so of this, she paused in a section that contained what looked to be historical documents. Newspapers, that sort of thing, and squinted, reaching to remove something that didn't quite fit the configuration of the rest of the library.
"This isn't even a book," she muttered, squinting at the clipboard. "Fandom clinic... patient fell unconscious and awoke without most of his memories... November..."
Yeah, she was throwing her head back and waving the thing in the air.
"This doesn't even go here! It doesn't even have more than one page!"
Pedantry finds a clue. Well done, Peridot.
Re: Research (12/8)
daredtalked her into licking the contacts on a blaster power pack) so she'd found herself headed towards the library. There'd been people here last time the island had given ehr this kind of feeling, as well as that stash of caf.Re: Research (12/8)
So, there he was. Looking terribly weirded out. "Why can't this place ever be normal?"
Re: Research (12/8)
"Does anyone know what the hell is going on?"
Re: Research (12/8)
Ahsoka, that would probably be more reassuring if Rhys actually knew about Obi-Wan's robe drama.
Re: Research (12/8)
"...what?" he asked, looking around for the man.in question in case he started aggressively removing clothing.
Re: Research (12/8)
Re: Research (12/8)
"And that's just supposed to be normal?" Rhys asked, voice going up a little at the end.
Re: Research (12/8)
Blame Obi-Wan's overdeveloped sense of drama, Rhys.
Re: Research (12/8)
"Uh huh," he muttered, giving her a look like he'd just met her.
Also, his drama level leaned more toward raging narcissists.
Re: Research (12/8)
Well, he was played by Ewan McGregor...Ahsoka's tended more towards 'and now everything was on fire'. "Don't worry, right now, he's more likely to be cranky over the lack of decent caf than anything."
Re: Research (12/8)
Someone grab the glitter and eyeliner!Well, the everything on fire was a given with--you know what? Not important. "I will keep that in mind," Rhys promised her. Then muttered, "Because it's seared into it."
Re: Research (12/8)
Re: Research (12/8)
"So, actual book research?"
Re: Talk to the Librarian (12/8)
In fact, it felt like him. But, well, not. He was trying not to think about it.
But that meant there was a stash of coffee and smokes in the office. One, he was hording for himself, because something something don't give the kids cigarettes. The other was being rationed, but he'd probably share if you were looking a bit rough.
Re: Research (12/8)
Re: Research (12/8)
"With actual books, even." That was still so weird.
Re: Research (12/8)
Volume, Peridot.
She frowned, turning the clipboard over in her hands, and then wrinkled her nose and held it up to Obi-Wan. It was so out of place here in the library, where she had been led to believe, between last night and this morning, they mostly made room for books and periodicals. And this wasn't even a good periodical. Somebody had scribbled out the year.
"Isn't even a book," she muttered again. "What's a medical?"
Non-organic life-form here, hi.
Re: Research (12/8)
"Have they considered how much easier it'd be to have digital copies?"
Re: Research (12/8)
Re: Research (12/8)
"I think the power's out," she said, glancing dubiously around the library.
Re: Research (12/8)
There was a long pause, and then she looked up at Obi-Wan in question.
"Is that normal for your species?"
Because really, it would explain so much about them.
Re: Research (12/8)
Because it could be nothing.
Re: Research (12/8)
They had so far as she had seen, but she was still new to this.
Re: Research (12/8)
He gestured towards the table. "It may be useful, or it may be nonsense. It is too early to tell."
Re: Research (12/8)
"There," she declared. "Stack started."
She still wasn't terribly sure what was notable about it, but she couldn't deny that having found something that one of the teachers here thought might be useful was satisfying all the same.
Re: Research (12/8)
"If there's a generator somewhere, I could try getting it going," he said, perking up as he looked around. The new ECHO eye glowed just a bit as he tried scanning with it.
It was, admittedly, a work in progress on what it picked up on.
Re: Research (12/8)
Re: Research (12/8)
"I'll look." And probably literally stumble over a clue. As was his way.
Re: Research (12/8)
stripperfriend seemed to be in charge, guess who was getting the information. Guess."So, this looks ominous," he said, holding out the slip of paper and rubbing the growing bump on his forehead with his robotic hand. His real power was not dying from all the head trauma inflicted on him.
It's her. The creature in the tower, she's the one that binds us here. We know that. But I think she has her claws in the one that flies and sparks, and the octopus-creature and its plumed beast. I stabbed it once, and I heard her roar.
Re: Research (12/8)
"... I suppose that explains where all the noise from the tower is coming from."
Re: Research (12/8)
"I'll just stay here. Hold down the fort. Away from there."

Re: Research (12/8)
He preferred for people not to know exactly how smart he was, just like he preferred that they not know how driven he could be, or what he knew, or who he knew, or... really anything at all. But today, he dispensed with his usual laxity and was deep into books with a will very quickly.
Despite his own formidable abilities at narrowing searches and locating information (at heart, Rufus was more than half a hacker) it was by accident that he found it, while stooping down to inspect a low shelf and his attention being caught by a small journal. It looked scorched around the edges and, peculiarly, was soggy to the touch.
Rufus grimaced as he picked it up. He was fastidious by nature and this was disgusting. But, because he was a good researcher and this journal looked out of place... he looked through it.
Dates were listed, up until the 5th of December. He couldn't find a year anywhere, but the dates that were still in the book began in October, and went weekly forward in time.
Most of the entries were illegible.
The first entry read: Decided to start documenting irregularities. The black is seeping into our soil now. Or is it seeping out of it? Patterns swirl upwards--
He gently peeled the pages apart from one another, leaning against the stacks, and went further through the journal. It wasn't long until he came across the fourth entry, which read:
I think the black is in the air now. Wasn't there a magic against this, once?
Rufus went through the rest of the book with his attention honed to that of a fine toothed comb, finding nothing, before coming out of the stacks, the journal splayed open in his hand.
"I think I've found something."
Because this was Rufus he said it matter-of-factly rather than urgently or loudly.
Re: Research (12/8)
"Welcome to our quarterly weirdness," she sighed, sitting down with a book.

It occurred to her that just having something to do might be what he was looking for.
"Although . . . if you'd like, you could help me keep everything neat, just so we aren't in any danger of books toppling over onto the floor? With so much going back and forth, it wouldn't do for them to end up where people might trip on them."
