Library, Thursday (December 8)

The fog that seemed to envelop the entire island today was hardly enough, in and of itself, to cause Cosette much alarm. The strange creatures, on the other hand, and the sudden deterioration of many of the buildings in town?

Those things were more than enough to have her hurrying into the library early today in lieu of her morning walk, and making sure that the tables and chairs were arranged to accommodate a good-sized group of people. She was fairly certain she knew what to expect today, if past experience was any indication.

Even though Khadgar had been warned about times the island went completely strange, seeing it happen firsthand was a little more terrifying than he wanted to admit. So, he'd headed for the library, since books were always the answer when things went wrong, and he smiled softly at Cosette when he came in. "Good afternoon. Have you been here all morning?"

"I have," Cosette answered, and gave him a smile in return. "I suspected, after I looked outside this morning, that people would be in to look into matters. That happens quite a bit around here. Is that what's brought you here, or are you looking for something else entirely? If so I'd be glad to help you, though I can't be certain all the books are where they ought to be."

"I've heard that... unsettling matters aren't entirely unusual here, especially at this time of year," Khadgar said. "I don't know how much help I can be, not knowing anything about what we're dealing with, but if you've been looking after everyone, do you need any help?"

"Yes, it's the sort of thing that happens surprisingly regularly here," Cosette admitted. "And it's kind of you to offer, but I'm all right, I promise you."

It occurred to her that just having something to do might be what he was looking for.

"Although . . . if you'd like, you could help me keep everything neat, just so we aren't in any danger of books toppling over onto the floor? With so much going back and forth, it wouldn't do for them to end up where people might trip on them."

Khadgar gave a little sigh of relief and nodded. "I can certainly do that, thank you. And if you do end up needing anything, you'll know where to find me."
